CAIR: New York Muslim Stranded in Germany by No-Fly List
(NEW YORK, NY, 10/17/12) -- The New York chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NY) today urged the United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the United States Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to allow Samir Suljovic, a 26-year-old New York resident and American citizen, to return home from Germany.
Suljovic traveled to Montenegro this summer to visit family and friends. After trying to fly back home to New York on October 1, he was informed by airline agents in Austria that the DHS and CBP had asked foreign authorities to prevent him from boarding his flight. Suljovic has been stranded for 17 days and has repeatedly been denied the right to fly home to New York. He has contacted the DHS and CBP liaison at JFK International Airport, but has received no response.
Despite being advised to seek help from the U.S. embassy in Germany, embassy personnel have reportedly provided no assistance, and instead have interrogated Suljovic and allegedly searched his cell phone without his permission.
Suljovic was born and raised in Oakland Gardens, Queens.
A letter addressed to Secretary of State Hilary Clinton, DHS Secretary Janet Napalitano, New York members of the United States Congress, and the United States Embassy in Munich was sent by CAIR-NY expressing concern and disappointment in the government's role in preventing Suljovic from returning to his family in New York.
The letter reads in part:
The denial of Mr. Suljovic's right to return home without due process of law constitutes a grave violation of his civil rights and liberties. Instead of protecting this young U.S. citizen while he traveled abroad, the government has effectively stranded him in an unfamiliar country without shelter or protection.
Earlier this year, CAIR called on the Department of Justice (DOJ) to investigate acts of coercion and intimidation allegedly used by the FBI to pressure Muslim citizens into giving up their constitutional rights if they wished to return to the United States from overseas.

CAIR Asks DOJ to Probe Oregon FBI's 'Coercion' of Muslim Citizens
Last year, CAIR filed a lawsuit against the DOJ and the FBI seeking a court order to allow a Virginia Muslim teenager who had been detained in Kuwait and placed on a U.S. government no-fly list to return to the United States.

Dash Cam Footage Shows Police Pursuing Stolen Ambulance
(Disclaimer: Video posted strictly for educational and informational purposes only)
Dashcam footage of a chase involving a psychiatric patient who stole an ambulance and led officers through multiple jurisdictions.
The chase started Saturday afternoon in Groesbeck near North Avenue. The psychiatric patient, a 42-year-old man, was being transported from McLaren Hospital, and was able to steal the ambulance by overpowering two MedStar employees during transport.
Clinton Township officers followed the stolen ambulance westbound on Hall Road near Romeo Plank. Then the Macomb County Sheriff's Office joined. Two of the Macomb deputies had their vehicles hit in the process of the chase. One of those deputies was taken to a local hospital as a precautionary measure.
The chase ended when the suspect crashed into a tree near the intersection of Schoenherr and 23 Mile roads in Shelby Township.
Driving across the Royal Gorge Bridge
The Royal Gorge Bridge crosses the Royal Gorge 955 feet (291 m) above the Arkansas River, and held the record of highest bridge in the world from 1929 until 2001. It is 1,260 feet (384 m) long, almost a quarter mile, with a wooden walkway with 1292 planks. The bridge is suspended from towers that are 150 feet (46 m) high. It remains among the ten highest bridges in the world and is the highest in the United States.
Trailer park millionaires
Some of the richest people in the US, including billionaires Warren Buffett and Sam Zell, have made millions from trailer parks at the expense of the country's poorest people. Seeing their success, ordinary people from across the country are now trying to follow in their footsteps and become trailer park millionaires. The Guardian went to Orlando to learn the tricks of the trade from Frank Rolfe, the self-appointed dean of Mobile Home University, as he led would-be investors around a trailer park for sex offenders.

Driving from Tucson, Arizona to San Diego, California (timelapse)
Interstate 8 (I-8) is an Interstate Highway in the southwestern United States. It runs from the southern edge of Mission Bay at Sunset Cliffs Boulevard in San Diego, California, almost at the Pacific Ocean, to the junction with I-10, just southeast of Casa Grande, Arizona. In California, the freeway travels through the San Diego metropolitan area as the Ocean Beach Freeway and the Mission Valley Freeway before traversing the Cuyamaca Mountains and providing access through the Imperial Valley, including the city of El Centro. Crossing the Colorado River into Arizona, I-8 continues through the city of Yuma across the Sonoran Desert to Casa Grande, in between the cities of Phoenix and Tucson.
The first route over the Cuyamaca Mountains was dedicated in 1912, and a plank road served as the first road across the Imperial Valley to Yuma; east of there, the Gila Trail continued east to Gila Bend. These were later replaced by U.S. Route 80 (US 80) across California and part of Arizona, and Arizona State Route 84 (SR 84) between Gila Bend and Casa Grande. The US 80 freeway through San Diego was largely complete by the time it was renumbered as I-8 in the 1964 state highway renumbering; east of San Diego, the US 80 roadway was slowly replaced by I-8 as construction progressed in the Imperial Valley. The Arizona portion of the road was built starting in the 1960s. Several controversies erupted during the construction process; questionable labor practices in Imperial County led to the federal conviction of mobster Jimmy Fratianno, and a U.S. House of Representatives subcommittee found that the Arizona government had mismanaged financial resources.

Los Angeles Motor Speedway, April 24, 1921. Motorcycle Board Track Race
This is a truly special piece of American history, a rare and remarkable glimpse into the high stakes sport of professional board track motorcycle racing during the Prohibition Era. Shot at the height of the sport, the film not only captures an intimate perspective of what it was like to race on America’s infamous board track speedways, but the race itself represents the high water mark of the sport since its inception. It showcases some of the world’s most iconic pioneer motorcycle racers as well as some of the most revered and highly specialized machines ever built, all hitting record competition speeds at a time when the culture was at its most appealing.
Though many are aware of the romanticized days of the board track motordrome, by the outbreak of WWI the small, circular American motordromes had already began to fade into the history books. What we see here was one of the crown jewels of the second generation of board tracks, the speedways. The 1.25 mile-long Los Angeles Motor Speedway, also referred to as the Beverly Hills Speedway was 1 of the 22 board track speedways built between 1915 and 1928. These massive wooden ovals, America’s timber circus’ became popular during the roaring twenties, though like their shorter circular relatives, the motordromes, the speedways too fell out of fashion within short time after their introduction. However, compared to the frenzied and often times violent motordromes, the larger, safer speedways gave the sport a proper venue for achieving breathtaking new speeds. It was on the speedways of the late-teens and early twenties where man and motorcycle first hit speeds of 100 miles an hour in competition, where countless world speed records where set, where heroes became icons, and where the high dollar, high stakes game of factory team racing duked it out during the final days of the first golden era of motorcycle racing.
This film comes from the M&ATA opening races at the Los Angeles Motor Speedway on April 24th, 1921. Speeds exceeded 100 mph averages throughout the day with a field of racers that could only be described as overflowing with legends. Ray Weishaar, Joe Wolters, Jim Davis, Otto Walker, Ralph Hepburn, Gene Walker, Freddie Ludlow, Curly Fredericks, and Shrimp Burns all lined up for the “Big Three,” Harley-Davidson, Indian, and Excelsior. This was the grand age of factory competition, overhead valves machines, lionized competitors, and lightning fast races. As seen in the film, former Harley-Davidson Wrecking Crew member Shrimp Burns, who was now the star of the Indian camp, covered 13 and 3/4 miles in the miss and out race in just under 6 minutes, an average speed of 103.78 mph, charging past Harley’s Otto Walker at the finish line and beating him by only inches.
Shrimp then crashed out in the 25-Mile race on the 11th lap at 106 mph, which Otto Walker later beat out Jim Davis, Gene Walker, and Joe Wolters to win. Otto Walker also set a new M&ATA record for the distance with an average speed of 104.43 mph. While Shrimp was carried off to the hospital his teammate, Indian’s Curly Fredericks on a factory stock Power Plus was leading the 50-Mile event, but he too crashed on the 9th lap. Fredericks complained his spill was due to dirty racing, but the officials could find no evidence of the fact, Harley-Davidson’s new kid Jim Davis won the 50-Mile followed by Ray Weishaar, Joe Wolters, and Fred Ludlow.
By the final race of the day, the 15-Mile, Shrimp was back from the hospital, splinter free and ready to run, though heavily bandaged. He piloted Frederick’s Power Plus as his 8-Valve was down for the count and immediately jumped to the front of the pack. Shrimp hit 102.55 mph on the stock pocket valve motor, setting a record as the first stock engine to do over 100 mph in competition, and winning the race in front of Ludlow and Hepburn. Indian’s most tenacious young star Shrimp Burns gave one of the most sensational performances of his career that day in front of 12,000 spectators at the Beverly Hills Speedway, and thankfully it all is captured here in this invaluable film for us to enjoy.
