When Zurich was known for Needle Park
It was impossible to overlook Zurich’s open drugs scene. Has the situation for addicts improved 20 years after its closure? The Platzspitz is a park in Zurich adjacent to the Swiss National Museum and the main railway station. In an attempt to confine the sprawling use of drugs, the authorities decided in 1987 to allow the use and sales of drugs in the park. Thus Zurich’s Platzspitz became one of the biggest open drug scenes in Europe. What became popularly known as “Needle Park” went out of control, and was cleared by the police in February 1992. The drug scene soon moved to the nearby and equally central area of Letten, between an unused railway station, and the banks of the river Limmat. Under unprecedented pressure from residents, the Letten area was finally cleared by the police 20 years ago. (SRF/swissinfo.ch)

When the neighboring park Platzspitz in Zurich was closed to the public, the open drug scene shifted to the Upper Letten in the mid-1990s. The area of the recently closed Letten train station became the meeting point for drug traffickers and consumers and the permanent residence of many drug addicts. Only when the Letten area was closed off on February 14, 1995 did the drug situation change, for the most part it shifted to Langstrasse or was spread all over the city.

An area of Zurich in Switzerland, frequented by drug-users, is to be closed down by police. The authorities in the city have previously turned a blind eye to drug peddlars and addicts who gathered in the area, under a bridge by a disused railway line. Police were responding to complaints from local residents that the area needs to be cleaned up to ensure the safety of children in the neighbourhood.

Cocaine boom in Zurich
Cocaine is no longer a high-society drug. Due to falling prices and increased availability, even young teenagers are buying it in Zurich, according to Swiss television. At the recent Street Parade, a mobile laboratory was set up to test the quality of the cocaine on sale. Tests showed that purity had sunk to an all-time low. (SF/swissinfo.ch)

Switzerland - Heroin treatment
T/I 11:09:29
A controversial proposal to distribute free heroin to terminally
ill addicts in Denmark has sparked fierce debate.
The move is the latest in a series of controversial experiments
involving heroin across Europe. In Switzerland, police allowed
drug addicts to inject themselves in one area of Zurich, known
as Needle Park, because city officials decided it was better
to keep the problem concentrated in one area.
However, after five years of turning a blind eye to pushers and
addicts who gathered in the area, under a bridge by a disused
railway line, police moved to close it down because of
complaints from local residents.

Heroin (Part 2)
When Evelyn G. was 27, her mother became ill and died in the space of five months. It was a huge shock and a turning point in her life. She began to take hard drugs on a regular basis. After losing her job, she took to the streets in Solothurn, Biel, Bern and slept in homeless shelters. She frequented the Zurich needle parks at Platzspitz and Letten and the open drug scene in the capital Bern. She took swissinfo back to the park in Bern where she used to buy her drugs.

Switzerland's Innovative Heroin Rehab Scheme
Heroin Drug Trial (1997): A feature on the novel Swiss plan to help drug addicts recover - by providing safe, controlled environments for the drugs to be taken.
For downloads and more information visit
Evelyn is a heroin addict. Since the age of 18 she's been caught in a downward spiral of unemployment, crime and prostitution. She's also one of a thousand users attending a clinic several times a day for a cheap, legal hit of heroin. Watching Evelyn 'shoot up' in the clean, controlled environment of the clinic is far removed from the squalid scenes of addiction in a Zurich park. She's even able to work as a waitress. But not all Swiss are impressed by the heroin trial. The referendum to halt it came from right-wing religious groups who label their government a drug pusher. Boris Piske once fed his drug habit as a male prostitute. Now married with two children, it was God and abstinence in a religious community which helped him quit. Meanwhile, on a drug bust in a downtown flat with the Zurich drug squad it's clear illegal drugs are still in plentiful supply. Police say driving addicts underground will merely worsen the problem. So far the Swiss trial has shown that the heroin clinic does work. Ninety addicts have already withdrawn. The government is considering extending the trial.

Zurich Travel Guide - Unforgettable Switzerland Dreams
Zurich Travel Guide - Unforgettable Switzerland Dreams
Zurich (German: Zürich, Zürich German: Züri) is the largest city in Switzerland, with a population of some 390,000 in the city proper and 1.2 million in the agglomeration area. Zurich is on Lake Zurich, where the lake flows into the River Limmat , in the north of Switzerland. Zurich is the largest city of the Swiss Confederation (Switzerland) by land area and population. It is the financial center of Switzerland and houses the stock exchange and the headquarters of a large number of national and international companies, and also home of FIFA's headquarters.
You also find Google's world-wide second largest development center in Zurich. Because Zurich is the central node of the Swiss-wide train network and also runs the biggest and busiest international airport in the country, it generally is the first place where tourists arrive. Because of the city's close distance to tourist resorts in the Swiss Alps and its mountainous scenery, it is often referred to as the portal to the Alps.
Contrary to a generally wrongly made assumption, Zurich is not the capital of Switzerland -- the Swiss are very much a confederation of Cantons and avoid naming any one city as capital in order to prevent that Canton from seeming more important than the others. Still, the federal government is headquartered in Berne and not Zurich. Zurich has long been known for being clean and efficient. Due to this, it has been continuously ranked as the city with the highest living standard world-wide for many years. However, only for the last fifteen years it has truly become a fascinating and worthwhile travel destination. This is mostly thanks to the liberalization of the party (more than 80 clubs are open at weekends) and gastronomy sectors (over 500 bars and more than 1500 restaurants). An increasingly cosmopolitan population has helped (every third inhabitant is a foreigner), as well, though more button-down Geneva remains Switzerland's most culturally heterogeneous city. Zurich always used to be well known for a demanding audience in opera/ballet, classical concerts, and theater. You find more than 50 museums and over 100 galleries in a inner city circle.
Zürich is famous for its highly efficient, clean and safe public transport system, owned by the several municipal transport agencies and managed by the Zürcher Verkehrsverbund (ZVV), which covers the entire canton of Zürich, plus some municipalities in bordering cantons for the passenger's convenience (in fact the 18x fare zones and some stops in zone 155). The network includes trams, buses (local city/municipality buses as well as the yellow bright Swiss PostAuto buses), suburban trains (S-Bahn), regular trains (SBB), cable cars and boats.
The quintessential Zürich dish is Zürigeschnätzlets, chopped veal in a cream and wine sauce, normally served with Rösti. Various kinds of grilled Würste (sausages, singular: Wurst) are also popular. These are most often accompanied by boiled potatoes, or Rösti, a kind of hash-browns, just much better (boiled potatoes then grated, then pan fried in butter until crisp) or Chnöpfli (small noodle dumplings, in Germany called Spätzle).
Zurich is the financial centre of Switzerland and most travellers come with an expense account. The hospitality sector focuses therefore mostly on the 4 and 5 star hotels. Zurich is known for its superb hotels, but these won't come cheap. Best is to go on a company rate, because rack rates are sometimes ridiculous.
