Plaza alta es una soléa preciosa del álbum Almoraima. Parece reflejar a la vez, en una sola pieza, la quietud de esta plaza durante las lánguidas tardes de siesta y, por otra parte, en una segunda y diferenciada estrofa, el bullicio y el trasiego de la mañana del diario.
En la Plaza ( Como los algecireños llaman a la plaza donde se ubica el mercado de abastos) tenía el padre de Paco, Antonio Sánchez Pecino, el puesto de telas y quincalla con el que ,a duras penas, conseguía sacar a su familia adelante. El puesto estaba justamente en la zona donde hoy están los tenderetes de fruta y verdura, es decir, en la zona exterior de la plaza más próxima a la Calle Tarifa, pegado al edificio del ingeniero Eduardo Torroja. Los hijos de Antonio recordarán las horas que pasaron bajo el mostrador del puesto, haciendo caligrafías y cuentas, mientras su padre despachaba el genero.
La Plaza Baja donde está el Mercado de Abastos de Algeciras, también llamado Mercado Ingeniero Torroja, es un edificio racionalista obra del ingeniero de caminos Eduardo Torroja Miret y ejecutado por el arquitecto Manuel Sánchez Arcas en 1935 en la Plaza Nuestra Señora de La Palma(Plaza Baja). Declarado Bien de Interés Cultural.

Plaza Alta is a square in the old town of Algeciras, Spain. It is one of the major centres of activity in the city, hosting numerous events and festivals throughout the year. Some of the city's most important buildings such as the Iglesia de la Palma and the Capilla de Europa stand on the square while neighbouring streets include Calle Ancha and Calle Convento.
The plaza is bounded by Camino Pablo Mayaho and Camino Ventura Moron. The Iglesia de la Palma is to the west, while the Capilla de Europa is to the southeast.
The square has had various names over time which mirror the history of Spain. Its first name, as today, was Plaza Alta which can be seen on a map dated 1725. After the city's replanning in 1807, Manuel Godoy called it Plaza del Almirante but shortly afterwards it became Plaza del Rey, then in conjunction with the 1821 insurrection, Plaza de la Constitución, returning to its previous name in 1824. From 10 October 1830, to mark Isabel II's ascension to the throne it was changed to Plaza de la Reina. In 1873, with the proclamation of the republic, it again became Plaza de la Constitución, a name it kept until 1931 when it was renamed Plaza de la República and in 1936, after the Civil War, Plaza del Generalísimo Franco. Finally during the transition, it finally returned to its original name, Plaza Alta, which in fact was what everyone had always called it.
The area occupied by the Plaza Alta has existed since the city was remodeled in accordance with plans drawn up by the Marquis of Verboom. There it is designated Plaza Alta (high square), in contrast to the market square Plaza Baja (low square).Since 1783, it has had a public fountain, Los Arcos, supplied with water from the city's aqueduct. The first systematic replanning of the area was undertaken in 1807 by General Castaños, Governor of the Campo de Gibraltar

Algeciras is a port city in the south of Spain, and is the largest city on the Bay of Gibraltar. The Port of Algeciras is one of the largest ports in Europe and in the world in three categories: container, cargo and transhipment.
Algeciras is situated 20 km north-east of Tarifa on the Río de la Miel, which is the southernmost river of the Iberian peninsula and continental Europe. Algeciras is the biggest city among its metropolitan area, that also includes the municipalities of Los Barrios, La Línea de la Concepción, Castellar de la Frontera, Jimena de la Frontera, San Roque and Tarifa .
Algeciras is principally a transport hub and industrial city. Algeciras principal activities are connected with the port, which serves as the main embarkation point between Spain and Tangier and other ports in Morocco as well as the Canary Islands and the Spanish enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla. Port of Algeciras is ranked as the 16th busiest port in the world. Algeciras also has a substantial fishing industry and exports a range of agricultural products from the surrounding area, including cereals, tobacco and farm animals.
In recent years Algeciras has become a significant tourist destination, with popular day trips to Tarifa to see bird migrations; to Gibraltar to see the territory's sights and culture; and to the Bay of Gibraltar on whale watching excursions.
Algeciras is the southern terminus of two principal north-south Euroroutes, the E05 and E15. Both routes, moreover, run to Scotland (the E05 terminates at Greenock and the E15 at Inverness) via France and England.
