105 Port Austin Kayak - Turnip Rock - Port Austin
Port Austin is quickly becoming one of the best places to kayak in the Midwest, so I met up with the man who could show me why. Chris Boyle owns the Port Austin Kayak and Bike Shop, and he rents everything from beginner kayaks to some pretty cool state-of-the art stuff. If you’re into kayaking or want to learn, he’s got everything you need.
Until we hit the water, I didn’t realize just how much fun kayaking could be. The water was clear, calm and unbelievably warm. And the views were spectacular, but according to Chris, we hadn’t seen anything yet. About a half hour into the trip we paddled around a rocky point, and what we saw was unbelievable. It was a huge rock formation called Turnip Rock, and I had no idea this kind of shoreline existed on Lake Huron. Turnip Rock is like a giant upside down triangle with trees growing on top. I’m not even sure how it stays upright.
We pulled into a little bay surrounded by cliffs and some pretty outrageous rock formations and took a few minutes for lunch. Chris lived in the Detroit area and vacationed in Port Austin as a kid. He started kayaking up there as an adult, fell in love with it and moved on up. I have to say that Chris is one of the nicest people you will ever encounter, in or out of a kayak. He made my first time experience a blast. If you’ve got it in ya, get to Port Austin and get in a kayak. Just promise not to turn turnip rock right side up. :-)

Kayaking to Turnip Rock, Port Austin, Michigan
If you ever talk to anyone from Michigan and ask them where they live, it's likely they'll show you the palm of their right hand and point to the relative position where they live in this mitten-shaped state.
In this video we're going to go to Port Austin which is located at the trip of the Michigan thumb. We've lived in Michigan all our lives, but we have never been to the thumb area. One of the Pure Michigan tourist ads featured a small geological formation called Turnip Rock that you can only visit from the water. So we packed up the kayak and headed to Port Austin.
We forgot this part in the video.
The high water levels also meant the surrounding rocks and the small beach were submerged, leaving no place to get out of the kayak to rest. All the land is private property, with the public rights only to the natural high-water line. And while owners allow you to stop and have a quick snack, you are not allowed to climb on any of the cliffs or the rock itself. Sadly, owners have had to hire security patrols to protect their property near this site. Please repay the owners' generosity by respecting their property and keeping this site open to future visitors.
Let's Visit Port Austin, MI
In this video, I head up to Port Austin, MI, located near the tip of the Thumb of Michigan. I check out the downtown area as well as walk out on the pier reaching out into Lake Huron. You can also see a distant breakwater lighthouse from afar.
Port Austin History: 1837 to 1957
This visual history documentary tells the story of the Port Austin village at the tip of the thumb and the early days of Port Crescent. The area has an Indian history, picturesque shorelines and early tourism to add to its legacy. Huron City, a lumber town, was also the summer home of Dr. Phelps and the Hubbard Families, now a historic site and museum. Lighthouses and Turnip Rock at Point Aux Barques are included in this history.
