Places to see in ( Lecce - Italy ) Porta Napoli
Porta Napoli is a triumphal arch of Lecce , which marks the entrance into the old town along with the other two existing doors Porta San Biagio and Porta Rudiae . It is located near Piazzetta Arco di Trionfo.
The door, built in 1548 in honor of Charles V who had built the fortification works in defense of the city, stands on the site of the ancient Porta San Giusto. It was commissioned by the citizens and by Ferrante Loffredo , head of the province of Terra d'Otranto , to celebrate in an emblematic way the power and empire of Charles V of Habsburg. It was so called because it was the road from which the consular road was undertaken for Naples .
The door, deprived of the sections of walls that flanked it after the nineteenth-century reconstruction of the city walls, was probably designed by the military architect Gian Giacomo dell'Acaya . The arc has a single fornix round arches and is flanked by two Corinthian columns on each side, which support a triangular gable, the center of which is present the imperial Hapsburg coat of arms of Charles V . In the decoration of the pediment there are also depictions of cannons and armor, reminiscent of the Roman triumphal arches. In the central part, under the pediment, an inscription praises the sovereign Charles V, also praised as exterminator of the Turks, connected to theTerra d'Otranto against Turkish incursions.
The dedicatory epigraph translates: To the emperor Caesar Charles V, august triumph, in the Indies, in the Gauls and in Africa; subjugator of rebellious Christians, fear and extermination of the Turks; propagator of the Christian religion throughout the world with works and advice; being in the government of this province Ferrante Loffredo, who managed to keep away from the shores of Salento and Japigia the Turks and the enemies of the empire; the University and the grateful people of Lecce dedicated this arch to the greatness and majesty of Him, the year 1548.
The promiscuous area at Porta Napoli has been affected by archaeological excavations conducted by the University of Salento , which have brought to light different burials rich in funerary equipment of the Messapian age .

Places to see in ( Lecce - Italy ) Porta Rudiae
Open on the arm of the eastern city walls, Porta Rudiae is the most interesting and ancient of the gates of Lecce , the one that turned towards the ancient destroyed city of Rudiae , from which it took its name. It is located in via Adua, near the intersection of Viale Università and via Dalmazio Birago.
Built on the ruins of an ancient gate that collapsed towards the end of the 17th century , Porta Rudiae was rebuilt in 1703 by the nobleman from Lecce, Prospero Lubelli. The door consists of a single archway , flanked by two columns on each side resting on a podium and supporting a frieze in which are placed the busts of the mythical founders of the city: Malennio , Dauno , Euippa and Idomeneo .
This gate, also called Sant'Oronzo , is surmounted by the statue of the saint, protector of Lecce, and by those of the other patrons of the holy city Irene and San Domenico . A Latin epigraph recalls how the door was rebuilt as a legate of the Lecce Prospero Lubelli under the mayor Cesare Belli.

The heart of Lecce is undoubtedly the part of the city that is able to enclose, simply walking, the most beautiful architectural beauties of the city in a mixture of styles and eras. The Historic Center is a must that must necessarily be admired if you are in Lecce even for a single day. The itinerary we suggest to visit it starts from the Obelisk and from Porta Napoli, one of the historical gates of the city (the other are Porta Rudiae and Porta San Biagio) which offers you a magical entrance to discover the wonders of the old city, a sort of passage that, almost like a stargate will be able to bring you back in time.
Leave the car in one of the streets to the right of the Obelisk, in order to avoid the paid parking lots in the center. At this point, to get in front of the Gate, you will pass by the Obelisk. It is a monument that connects the new city - frontally and to its right - and the oldest part to its left. It was built by order of the Bourbons in 1822 by Vito Carluccio, has four facades that tell a story from the base going upwards: below is clearly a dolphin biting a crescent, or the Bourbon victory against the Turks.
So go to Porta Napoli through a modern and pleasant square and in a few seconds you will find the door in front of your eyes: the entrance was made in the sixteenth century by Charles V, you can immediately admire its grandeur. The front part supports the triumphal arch with Corinthian columns supporting a triangular pediment with the effigy of the Hapsburg Empire.
Crossing Porta Napoli you will enter the old city itself, closed to traffic . Proceed, however, turning to the right, since the way presents a more interesting aspect than proceeding from the front. You will therefore walk along the paved Via Palmieri , admiring the Paiesiello Theater from the outside and continuing straight on until you reach Piazza Duomo. Here you will find one of the most beautiful city squares enclosed in a large courtyard. Enjoy an ice cream sitting on one of the many steps that make entrance to the Duomo is a common habit among the locals and you will particularly appreciate the play of light on the Duomo itself, the bell tower and the whole area after sunset: the atmosphere that you will find is ancient, magical and romantic.
Exit from Piazza Duomo and choose: turning left along Via Libertini you will reach the other city gate ( Porta Rudiae ) coming out again from the Center, while on the right along Via Vittorio Emanuele II you will go even further into Lecce Baroque. On the left you will find the newly renovated Church of Sant'Irene , several lounge bars and takeaways, souvenir shops and bookshops, until you reach the wonderful Piazza Sant'Oronzo , the essence of the city.

( Lecce - Italy ) is a historic city of 94,766 inhabitants (2015) in southern Italy, the capital of the province of Lecce, the third province in the region by population, as well as one of the most important cities of Apulia. It is the main city of the Salentine Peninsula, a sub-peninsula at the heel of the Italian Peninsula and is over 2,000 years old.
Because of the rich Baroque architectural monuments found in the city, Lecce is commonly nicknamed The Florence of the South. The city also has a long traditional affinity with Greek culture going back to its foundation; the Messapii who founded the city are said to have been Cretans in Greek records. To this day, in the Grecìa Salentina, a group of towns not far from Lecce, the griko language is still spoken.
In terms of industry the Lecce stone - a particular kind of Limestone is one the city's main exports, because it is very soft and workable, thus suitable for sculptures. Lecce is also an important agricultural centre, chiefly for its olive oil and wine production, as well as an industrial centre specializing in ceramic production.
Roman Amphitheatre: built in the 2nd century and situated near Sant'Oronzo Square, was able to seat more than 25,000 people. It is now half-buried because other monuments were built above it over the centuries. The theatre is currently used for different religious and arts events.
Column of statue of St Oronzo: (Lecce's patron) was given to Lecce by the city of Brindisi, because Saint Oronzo was reputed to have cured the plague in Brindisi. The column was one of a pair that marked the end of the Appian Way, the main road between Rome and southern Italy.
Torre del Parco (Park Tower) is one of the medieval symbols of Lecce. It was erected in 1419 by the then-18 years old Giovanni Antonio Del Balzo Orsini, prince of Lecce. The tower, standing at more than 23 metres (75 ft), is surrounded by a ditch in which bears (the heraldic symbol of the Orsini del Balzo) were reared. The whole complex was the seat of Orsini's tribunal and of a mint, and after Giovanni Antonio's death, it became a residence for the Spanish viceroys.
Palazzo Sedile: Palace was built in 1592 and was used by the local council until 1852.
Castle of Charles V: built in 1539–49 by Gian Giacomo dell'Acaja. It has a trapezoidal plan with angular bastions. It is attached to the Politeama Greco Opera House, inaugurated on 15 November 1884.
Triumphal Arch (Arco di Trionfo, commonly called Porta Napoli, Neapolitan Gate) which is one of the three gates to enter Lecce's historical city centre, erected in 1548 in honor of Charles V. It replaced an older gate, Porta S. Giusto, which, according to tradition, lay over the tomb of the namesake saint. Also built over pre-existing medieval gates are the current Porta San Biagio (St. Blaise Gate) .
Palazzo dei Celestini, now seat of the Province of Lecce. It was built in 1659–95 and designed by Giuseppe Zimbalo.
The city's obelisk, erected in 1822 in honour of Ferdinand I of the Two Sicilies.
The Archaeological Museum Sigismondo Castromediano.
The Archaeological Museum Faggiano.
Church of the Holy Cross: Construction of the Chiesa di Santa Croce) was begun in 1353, but work halted until 1549.
Lecce Cathedral: The church was originally built in 1144, rebuilt in 1230, then totally restored in the 1659–70 by Giuseppe Zimbalo, who also built the five storey 70-metre (230 ft) high bell tower, with an octagonal loggia.
San Niccolò and Cataldo The church is an example of Italo-Norman architecture. It was founded by Tancred of Sicily in 1180. In 1716 the façade was rebuilt, with the addition of numerous statues, but maintaining the original Romanesque portal. The walls were frescoed during the 15th-17th centuries.
Celestine Convent: Built (1549–1695) in Baroque-style by Giuseppe Zimbalo. The courtyard was designed by Gabriele Riccardi.
Santa Irene: This church was commissioned in 1591 by the Theatines and dedicated to Saint Irene . The architect was Francesco Grimaldi). It has a large façade showing different styles in the upper and lower parts. Above the portal stands a statue of Ste Irene (1717) by Mauro Manieri. The interior is on the Latin cross plan and is rather sober. The main altarpiece is a copy of the St Michael the Archangel by Guido Reni. The high altar has a Transport of the Holy Ark by Oronzo Tiso. In the right transept is one of the largest altars in Lecce, dedicated to Saint Cajetan (1651).
