What Exactly is the Polish School of Posters?
Culture.pl asked Mariusz Knorowski, the director of the Wilanów Poster Museum in Warsaw, to talk about the Polish School of Posters and the beginnings of the International Poster Biennale – the world’s first big event devoted to poster art.
Polish posters are renowned throughout the world for their unusual creativity and cult status, especially the Polish posters for feature films from outside the country shown during the communist regime.

Pągowski graduated from The State University of Fine Arts in Poznan in 1978 and began to design posters, which has since become his main interest. In addition to posters, he designs theatrical settings, prints and catalogues.
One of the younger of the Third Generation of artists of Polish School of Posters, he easily made the transition from socialism to capitalism; in 1990, he created his own graphic studio, STUDIO P, which developed into an advertising agency in 1993 and continues in operation today. In 1992, he had become art director of the Polish edition of Playboy. As an artist, his individualized posters evoke a range of moods and ideas. He claims to have created a separate concept for each of his many posters, saying: “Every poster for me is an individual exercise different from the previous one.” His art can be found in many European museums as well as the Museum of Modern Art in New York,.He has also had one-man shows in Stockholm, Paris, London, and Warsaw.

The presentation will present various stages of font and lettering development in Poland since the Renaissance to modern times. Its aim is to provide an overview of the complexities of Polish printing and publishing industries – and will focus on important examples of typographic and lettering design, beginning with the 15th century Latin, Cyrillic and Hebrew incunabula, through the first codifications of the Polish alphabet, baroque typographic experiments and the printing production of the 16-19th centuries. Modernized design of the first decades of the 20th century will be shown through opposing tendencies - one of searching a “national style”, and another that followed the ideas of new typography. Limited access to modern Polish fonts resulted in a flamboyant explosion of lettering styles applied in poster, advertisement and book-cover design in the 1920-s and 30-s, that has partly influenced the “Polish Poster School” in the following decades. Piotr Rypson is Deputy Director at the National Museum, Warsaw. PhD in literary studies. Visiting professor at Rhode Island School of Design (1994-1999). Curator of numerous exhibitions. Author of books and articles on art, information architecture, visual communication and literature. Author of Against all Odds. Polish Graphic Design 1919-1949 (2011). Now works on a book on Polish graphic design 1945-49.

폴란드, 천년의 예술 Polish Art: An Enduring Spirit

The National Museum of Korea is pleased to present Polish Art: An Enduring Spirit, a special exhibition co-organized by the National Museum of Korea, KBS, National Museum in Warsaw, and Adam Mickiewicz Institute(Culture.pl). To most Koreans, Poland is well-known as the homeland of the astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus who revolutionized scientific thought, as well as the poet of the piano, Frédéric Chopin. However, there have been few opportunities to illuminate the broader thousand years of the progression of Polish history and culture. In this overview of the history of Polish art from the Middle Ages to the twentieth century, over 250 objects from a range of genres, including paintings, sculptures, drawings, craftworks and posters, will be displayed for the first time in Korea.
Located on the broad plains connecting Eastern and Western Europe, Poland has established a unique cultural tradition while embracing the diverse cultures of neighboring peoples. Once a power in central Europe, Poland vanished from the world map for over a century only to emerge as a fierce battlefield during both world wars. Across a history riddled with wars and foreign invasions, Poland has maintained its national identity and culture. The precious cultural properties loaned by the National Museum in Warsaw and eighteen other institutes across Poland vividly bear witness to the turbulent history of the nation, and exemplify the spirit of Poland as it brilliantly endured centuries of turmoil. We hope that visitors come to feel the spiritual messages of Polish art.
