The Cannabis Guide to San Diego
The oldest city in the California state, San Diego is widely known as “America’s Finest City” because of its amazing weather, beautiful sandy beaches, friendly people and a lot of other things!
San Diego is famous for another reason – it’s one of the most progressive cannabis cities in California. While marijuana is still classified as a schedule I substance under the federal law, you can use marijuana legally in San Diego for both medicinal or recreational purposes.
As per Proposition 64 passed by 56% of votes in favor on November 8, 2016, recreational marijuana has been legal in the whole of California since January 1st, 2018. Under legalization, weed sales in California are estimated to reach $7 billion a year in revenue by 2021, along with $1 billion taxes per year.
In September 2017, the San Diego City Council voted 6 to 3 to go all-in with it. They legalized marijuana cultivation, distribution, and retail sales making San Diego the center of a new “Green Rush” - a billion-dollar worth industry.
According to San Diego’s new cannabis law,
- You can purchase or carry up to 1 ounce (28.5 grams) of weed, or eight grams of concentrate such as hash, tincture, oil, etc. if you’re 21 years or older.
- You can grow up to six plants for personal use in a private property. You can’t sell without a license.
- You cannot smoke cannabis within 1,000 feet of a school, day care center, or youth center while people are present. For using cannabis publicly, you may encounter $100 -$250 fine.
- You can drive with cannabis if you keep it in a closed container or in your car’s trunk. The police may otherwise allege you for having an “Open Container”
- You are subject to DUI laws if you are found driving under the influence of cannabis.
- You can’t consume or possess cannabis on federal properties such as national parks or historical places even if it is in San Diego.
- Non-medical cannabis businesses are required to pay a 5% tax on monthly gross receipts which is scheduled to rise to 8% from July 1, 2019, unless the city council declares something else.
- Though it is legal under California state law, employers can prohibit the use of cannabis by their employees or can deny employment to a marijuana user. A medical cannabis card holder could be an exemption to this in certain cases.
If you love cannabis, then San Diego might just be the perfect city for you. Many cannabis enterprises are budding out here and the West Coast Cannabis Tours take you behind the scenes.
And all you need is a medical marijuana card in San Diego to buy the herb legally.
A glut of medical marijuana dispensaries in San Diego has appeared all over the city with the end of prohibition on the herb.
But remember, only stores with both state licenses and local permits can sell cannabis to customers. So, you better purchase from CUP licensed marijuana outlets to avoid any subtle legal issue.

Encinitas, California Offers A Relaxed Atmosphere & Sense of Small Town
Film produced by
Encinitas, California is one of the best places to live in San Diego. The city is located in North County and is bordered by Solana Beach to the south and Carlsbad to the North.
From the beach communities of Leucadia, Old Encinitas and Cardiff, to the rural Olivenhain, there is definitely something for everyone. With a population of just under 60,000 and a median home price of roughly 1 million dollars, Encinitas, California boasts a laid back vibe that just somehow seems to make life more worth living.
Driving down the coast highway in the region of Old Encinitas and Leucadia, you’ll see the iconic Encinitas welcome arch. Tree lined streets mixed with trendy, yet casual restaurants, and a perfect mix of businesses and housing styles. You’ll likely see a yoga or pilates class ending and people walking out with a sense of bliss.
Surfers are also sure to find a great time at Swamis, a well known surfing point break.
The southernmost part of Encinitas is a small community known as Cardiff, which boasts its own zip code and approximately 12,000 total residents. A well known landmark is the Cardiff Kook which is a statue of a man surfing that locals dress up in various costumes throughout the year. Cardiff is also is home to the San Elijo state campground that sits right on the ocean bluffs. If you are lucky enough to get a campsite here, be sure to enjoy the beach or try surfing the famous Cardiff Reef. For dinner you can head to Seaside Market to grab a burgundy tri-trip to take back and cook at your campsite. And for breakfast, don’t forget about VG donuts.
Moving further east in Encinitas you will find the newer planned developments and ample shopping. A little farther east, is rural Olivenhain, where you’ll find ranch style homes on larger lots and horse properties.
There is also spectacular golfing at Encinitas Ranch, which is one of the few golf courses in San Diego. The course is located on magnificent bluffs with ocean views.
To unwind in a tranquil environment, one can step into the Self Realization & Meditation Garden and stroll through the lush plants and koi ponds. There is also the San Diego Botanical Gardens where one can explore four miles of garden trails, beautiful views, trees and the nation’s largest bamboo collection.
The relaxed atmosphere and sense of a small town in a big city is what draws people to Encinitas, California. It is truly a wonderful place to call home.
What Surfing in California is Really Like - Day 5 & 6 Baja, California (Mexico)
Days five and six of our ten day surfing guide saw us head to Baja, California, Mexico. I know what you're thinking. You thought this was a ten day guide to California?
A trip across the border to Baja is as big a part of the Southern California surf experience as Ford woodies and life guard towers.
Surfers from Southern California have been making the trip South for decades. While it may not be what it used to be, it's still as accessible and exciting as it ever was. If you are visiting California for a surf trip or living here and haven't made the trek South, I would seriously suggest packing up the car and going, either for a day or a long weekend.
There are not many places in the world where you can drive for two or three hours and have a completely new and exhilarating cultural experience. After first crossing the border and driving west towards the ocean along the infamous border fence, you'll find yourself swallowed by the hillside shanty towns and the make-shift shack like homes of Tijuana. All the while, shining and teasing in the distance, in all it's wealthy glory is San Diego. The contrast is breath taking and a true education.
From the border it's up to you how far you want to go. The peninsular is yours, the further you go, the more prepared you need to be as human interaction will become less and less prevalent and you truly will be doing some wilderness camping and surfing empty waves. On this occasion, due to time constraints we didn't head too far down and stuck to Baja Norte.
As always, be smart and respectful. The people and culture of Mexico are friendly, welcoming and kind. But sadly, due to corruption and instability, Mexico can be a dangerous place. Some golden rules to follow would be to get to where you need to be before dark, don't be out on the roads at night and stick to the toll roads where possible. We will have a video and article going into more detail on the risks and rewards of Mexico coming soon.
While we didn't get all that lucky with surf conditions or weather on this trip, we did have a lot of fun and continued our ten day challenge in almost deserted waves. We found numerous peaks to ourselves, had one of the most beautiful sunset sessions I've ever had and lived some true adventures not three hours from our suburban Orange County homes.
Watch day 5 and 6 above and please like and subscribe if you enjoy the videos.
All the videos on this channel are inspired by the ideas in the number one selling book, The Average Surfer's Guide to Travel, Waves and Progression. You can grab a copy of the book by visiting or on Amazon.

Good days of shore diving in Southern California
When it's calm and clear you're likely to see large groups of fish schooling. So if it's a nice flat day, go out there and dive! It's only a beach dive away.
Most of these shots are from Woods Cove and Crescent Bay in Laguna Beach, with the largest fish school off of Catalina Island.

Emily Hixson Tandem Skydiving At Skydive Elsinore
Tandem Skydiving at
Tandem Skydiving is the most exhilarating way to make your first skydive! Imagine the rush of exiting the skydiving aircraft and accelerate up to speeds of 120mph! With just about a minute of free fall, you will experience a rush of adrenaline which will take your breath away! You will also have the opportunity to pull the ripcord (Don't worry, your instructor will do it for you if you wish) as you decelerate to enjoy a 4 minute canopy ride while soaking in the breath taking views throughout Southern California, and truly understand why birds sing.
Tandem Skydiving is the quickest and safest way to enjoy your first skydiving experience, as you will be securely attached to a United States Parachute Association (USPA) licensed Tandem Master.
Skydive Elsinore adheres to and surpasses the highest levels of safety standards set for by the USPA. Additionally, we have an incredible safety record and have the longest running civilian Skydiving operation in North America which was established in 1959.
If you are looking for scenery, then look no further! Skydive Elsinore is by far the most scenic skydiving center throughout Southern California! With views of the Pacific Ocean, Catalina Island, Lake Elsinore, Mount Palomar, Big Bear, and Mt. San Jacinto, you will quickly realize why Skydive Elsinore is the most scenic, popular Skydiving Center throughout Southern California.
Being the closest Skydiving Center to Los Angeles, San Diego, Orange and Riverside Counties; Skydive Elsinore is a short drive from anywhere throughout Southern California!
Your instruction will include specific training on the equipment you will use with your Tandem Master, you will also learn about the aerodynamics of arching your body in free fall, along with how to assist flying the parachute with your instructor.
Video which will last a lifetime
You can never repeat your very first skydive - the excitement, the adrenalin, the pure freedom you feel that is utterly unlike anything else in the world. You can't repeat it but you can relive it!
We offer professional freefall photography services for your first jump and for training purposes. Your camera flyer will jump out of the plane with you, video and still cameras on his/her helmet, following you throughout freefall.
Your video and still pictures will include some pre-jump footage, up close freefall footage and the after jump excitement. Don't miss out on capturing forever this once in a lifetime experience!
What is the Accelerated Free Fall (AFF) Program?
The AFF course is the unsurpassed method of training if you are interested in jumping with your own equipment and ultimately becoming a licensed skydiver. The AFF course is the most advanced skydiving training course offered and is endorsed by the United States Parachute Association (USPA).
On your first AFF Level, you will receive 4-6 hours of ground training, followed by the jump utilizing your own equipment and jumping with two USPA certified instructors. Under normal conditions, you will jump the same day as you complete the ground training.
The AFF Course/Program is structured in a two-phase training progression program. Phase I consists of eight jumps, where you will be jumping with an instructor on each level. Each one of the eight jumps is regarded to as learning categories (modules). Each category features a performance objective that must be accomplished prior to advancing to the next level. Completing Phase I qualifies you to make solo skydives under the supervision of an AFF qualified Instructor. At this point, you will be allowed to skydive on your own as you will now be on Student Solo Status.
What you can expect on your first jump
After reaching the desired altitude (12,500'a.g.l.), it is time to free-fall with your two instructors who will grasp your harness on each side. Upon exiting the aircraft, you will quickly accelerate to over 120 miles per hour for up to 60 seconds in free fall! You will then pull the deployment handle (ripcord) and enjoy a breath taking five minute flight under your own parachute. Yes, these parachutes truly fly and you get to steer your parachute during your descent. We will help you guide your parachute via radio communication and control commands for a safe landing. After the skydive, you will be critiqued and given a First Jump Certificate and a skydiving logbook. As you pass to the next learning level, your instructor will outline the next lesson plan and explain the new objectives.
