Places to see in ( Castile La Mancha - Spain ) Toledo Puerta de Bisagra
The Puerta de Bisagra is a monumental gateway located in the walls of the city Spanish in Toledo. Puerta de Bisagra is located in the city of Toledo , in Castilla-La Mancha . It is known with the title of New because there is another gate in the vicinity -of smaller size- called Puerta Antigua de Bisagra or Puerta de Alfonso VI . His Muslim name was bab al Shaqra .
There is some debate regarding its origin and antiquity, this being the first Arabic or Mudejar . It underwent a reconstruction in the middle of the XVI century, that should have started around 1540; would participate in it Nicolás de Vergara el Viejo , Juan de Benavides, Eugenio Sánchez and around 1547-1548 Alonso de Covarrubias . The works would end in 1576.
Toledo Puerta de Bisagra consists of two separate bodies with two high crenellated walls that unite, forming a courtyard between them, where a statue of Carlos V . The outer side is formed by a semicircular arch with padded ashlars , on which there is a large shield of the «Imperial City», with its unmistakable double-headed eagle , as well as a pediment with a sculpture of an angel custodian. Flanking this entrance two large circular towers. The body that faces the city has another semicircular arch door, flanked by two square towers topped by pyramidal roofs.

TOLEDO Spain
Toledo arose over the course of 2,500 years, whose legacy we can observe today in its
streets, monuments and museums.
On the other side of the Tagus River, at the Cerro del Bu archaeological site, remnants
of its origins as a city take us back to its oldest inhabitants, the Carpetani, who dwelled
here during the Bronze Age.
Conquering the city in 192 BC, the Romans renamed it Toletum. Today one can still see
signs of the Empire’s heritage, in the traces of the Roman road, the circus for chariot
races, beams, mosaics and, in Carranque, near Toledo, the villa, it is believed, of
Maternus Cinegius, who served under Emperor Theodosius I.
After the Visigoths’ taking of the city in the 4th century, they established the capital of
their kingdom here, and two centuries later, in 589, Reccared would convene the
Council of Toledo, at which Arianism was rejected and Catholicism was embraced as
the kingdom's faith.
But Visigothic hegemony would only last until 711, when the Moors conquered the
capital. It is to this empire that Toledo owes its current form, including the narrow and
steep streets we walk today, and architectural highlights like the mosques of Cristo de
la Luz, and Tornerías; and the Puerta de Alcantara gate.
The Reconquest reached Toledo in 1085 and, after the Christians' victory, King Alfonso
VI made it the capital of the Kingdom of Castile, wresting this honour from Burgos.
In 1226, Fernando III began construction on the Cathedral of Toledo, on what had been
the city’s Mezquita Mayor, or Main Mosque.
Meanwhile, throughout these centuries of conquest and reconquest, the Jews had
remained in Toledo, also shaping it and leaving us examples of their architecture, such
as the Synagogue of Santa María la Blanca, and that of El Tránsito. This cultural
coexistence would begin to erode in the 14th century, until it was shattered by the
Catholic Monarchs, who decreed the expulsion of the Jews in 1492.
These kings were also responsible for the contruction of the Monasterio de San Juan
In fact, it was here where they
wished to be buried, though their remains were ultimately laid to rest far from Toledo,
in Granada's Royal Chapel.
In the 16th century, after the revolt of los comuneros against King Charles V, the ruler
wished to show the world the power of the Empire's capital through impressive works
of Renaissance architecture, such as El Alcázar, now an army museum – which would
have a sad moment of prominence during the Spanish Civil War, when rebel troops
resisted the Republican army's siege of the fortress.
Many centuries before this episode, Toledo's hegemony as capital of the kingdom
came to an end when in 1561 the King Felipe II moved the court to Madrid, relegating
Toledo to city of convents and monasteries. It was during this era when the artist that
would forever be associated with the culture of the city moved there: El Greco. It was
here where the painter developed his fullest and most personal style, with works like
the main altarpiece of the church of Santo Domingo el Antiguo, and The Burial of the
Count of Orgaz, which we can view in the church of Santo Tomé.
Today Toledo is the capital of Castilla la Mancha, and a living example of the cultures
that have shaped, over the centuries, the country we are today.

Places to see in ( Castile La Mancha - Spain ) Toledo
Toledo is an ancient city set on a hill above the plains of Castilla-La Mancha in central Spain. The capital of the region, it’s known for the medieval Arab, Jewish and Christian monuments in its walled old city. It was also the former home of Mannerist painter El Greco. The Moorish Bisagra Gate and the Sol Gate, in Mudéjar style, open into the old quarter, where the Plaza de Zocodover is a lively meeting place.
Toledo is one of the Spanish cities with the greatest wealth of monuments. Known as the “city of the three cultures”, because Christians, Arabs and Jews lived together there for centuries, behind its walls Toledo preserves an artistic and cultural legacy in the form of churches, palaces, fortresses, mosques and synagogues. This great diversity of artistic styles makes the old quarter of the capital of Castile - La Mancha a real open-air museum, which has led to it being declared a World Heritage Site.
Toledo is also a city linked to deep popular traditions, as the procession of the Most Holy Corpus Christi, a festival declared of International Tourist Interest, demonstrates every year.
The city of Toledo has its origins in Toletum, the name the Romans gave to this settlement on the banks of the River Tagus after its conquest in 190 BC. The city maintained its importance for centuries and, in the Visigothic era, became the capital of Hispania (6th C.). The arrival of the Arabs in the 8th century, together with the presence of Christians and Jews, made Toledo the “city of the three cultures”. This was one of the Toledo's most splendid periods when, among other important events, the Toledo School of Translators was founded. Later, when Carlos V came to the throne in 1519, the city became an imperial capital.
The way that Christians, Arabs and Jews lived side by side for centuries has been reflected in the form of a great artistic and cultural legacy. The maze of streets making up the historic centre of Toledo is only bounded by walls in which many gates were opened. The Bisagra gate, presided over by two bodies and a great imperial shield forms the main access to the city within the walls. This noble gate, of Muslim origin, includes a central courtyard and was altered during the reign of Carlos I (Emperor Carlos V)I. The Alfonso VI gate or Vieja de Bisagra gate, built in 838, is one of the most faithful reflections of Muslim art in the city. The Sol gate was built in the 13th century in Mudejar style and contains the remains of a paleochristian sarcophagus.
Via these and other entrances you can reach picturesque places, like the Plaza de Zocodover. In the Arab period, this central space housed an important market, and festivals and all kinds of social events were held here. Nowadays the square, surrounded by buildings with porches, continues to be one of the busiest places in the city. Synagogues, mosques and churches jostle in the narrow streets of Toledo, which is characterised by the mixture of artistic styles.
The Mosque of Cristo de la Luz, which predates the Christian reconquest, was built in 999 as a copy of the Mosque at Córdoba. It is an unusual building with a square floor plan covered by nine caliphal vaults (a type of groined vault leaving the centre free). To this, a Romanesque-Mudejar sanctuary was added in the 12th century.
Good examples from the Mozarabs (Christians who lived under Moslem rule) are the churches of San Sebastián and Santa Eulalia, while the Mudejars left in Toledo a style with rich Arab decoration. Horseshoe arches, lobed windows and other architectural elements can be appreciated in various buildings in Toledo. Santiago del Arrabal is one of the best examples of this style in the city, which has led this church also being known as the Mudejar Cathedral. The origin of its construction is uncertain, although it was probably in the time of King Alfonso VI when the church was built, taking advantage of an old mosque. The outstanding features of the early structure are a tower which recalls a Muslim minaret.

Spain Trip 2017 #24 Toledo's Town Walls & Gates
The town walls encircling Toledo date to the 10th century. The 14th c. Puerta del Sol was constructed by the Moors. The most dramatic entry into Toledo is the 16th c. Bisagra Gate. Puerta de Alfonso VI is the only town gate to retain its original 10th c. military architecture. It is named after the king who rode into town triumphantly through this gate after reconquering Toledo from the Moors in 1086. While in Toledo, we stayed at the Hotel Santa Isabel. Our balconies overlooked a small church of the same name and also had views of the cathedral in the distance. The hotel also had a delightful rooftop terrace with panoramic views of the city. The video ends with a series of still photos taken by my wife, Pam.

Toledo is truly one of Spain's most magnificent cities. Dramatically sited atop a gorge overlooking the Río Tajo, it was known as the City Of Three Cultures in the Middle Ages, a place where Christian, Muslim and Jewish communities peacefully coexisted. Unsurprisingly, rediscovering the vestiges of this unique cultural synthesis remains modern Toledo’s most compelling attraction. Horseshoe-arched mosques, Sephardic synagogues and one of Spain’s finest Gothic cathedrals cram into its dense historical core. But the layers go much deeper. Further sleuthing will reveal Visigothic and Roman roots. Though it's justifiably popular with day trippers, try to stay overnight to really appreciate the city in all its haunting glory.

Toledo is considered most representative of Spanish culture, and its historic centre was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1986. Its rocky site is traversed by narrow, winding streets, with steep gradients and rough surfaces, centring on the Plaza Zocodover. Two bridges cross the Río Tajo: in the northeast is the bridge of Alcántara, at the foot of the medieval castle of San Servando, parts of which date from Roman and Moorish times, in the northwest is the bridge of San Martín, dating from the late 13th century. Parts of the walls of Toledo are of Visigothic origin, although most are Moorish or Christian. There are well-preserved gateways from various periods, including the Puerta Vieja de Bisagra from the 10th century, traditionally used by Alfonso VI in 1085.
