David's Been Here is in the Castilla La Mancha city of Toledo, where David tours La Puerta del Sol, or the Gate of the Sun. This historic gate was built in the late 14th Century by the Knights Hospitaller and stood as the main entry point into the ancient city. The gate gets its name from the medallion located above the threshold, which once depicted a sun on one side, and a moon on the other. Now depicting the ordination of Toledo's patron saint Ildephonsus, the sun and moon no longer exist- but the name still stands. Puerta del Sol is a city gate of Toledo, Spain, built in the late 14th century by the Knights Hospitaller. The medallion above the arch of the gate depicts the ordination of the Visigothic Ildephonsus, Toledo's patron saint. The name of the gate comes from the sun and the moon that were once painted on either side of this medallion.
Toledo Puerta del Sol has a Mudejar style and was built to give access to the walled city. It is a door of albarrana, of commemorative character, of great Nasrid influence . It is dated in the last quarter of the fourteenth century .
The access arch is a horseshoe arch and is supported by a pointed horseshoe arch. It is built in stone, ashlar masonry and masonry . The battlements , the merlons and the frieze of the door are brick. With interlocking lobed arches.

La Puerta del Sol es de estilo mudéjar y fue construida para dar acceso a la ciudad amurallada. Se trata de una puerta de albarrana, de carácter conmemorativo, de gran influencia nazarí. De origen árabe fue reconstruida en el siglo XIV.
El acceso es un arco de herradura apuntado. Está construida en piedra, sillería y mampostería. Las almenas, los merlones y el friso de la puerta son de ladrillo con arcos lobulados entrelazados.

MONUMENTOS DE TOLEDO: La Puerta del Sol
La Puerta del Sol es una de las 5 grandes puertas de acceso al casco histórico que quedan en pie en la actualidad y, bajo mi punto de vista, también es una de las más bonitas e impresionantes. Se encuentra en el paseo del miradero, en la subida que va desde la puerta de Bisagra a la plaza de Zocodover.
Atravesar sus arcos de herradura es hacer un viaje en el tiempo cientos de años atrás, cuando Toledo era una ciudad bajo dominación árabe.
En su origen esta puerta era una torre albarrana que defendía el acceso a la ciudad musulmana. Para todos aquellos que, como yo, os lo habeis preguntado, la albarrana es una torre adelantada al resto de la muralla.
Es en el S. XII cuando aparece la primera referencia como puerta de acceso a la Medina de la ciudad Arabe, aunque de esta época se conservan pocos elementos.
Su impresionante estilo mudéjar militar actual se debe a la reconstrucción llevada a cabo en el S. XIV por los caballeros hospitalarios.
Además, esta puerta guarda una leyenda negra que gira en torno a dos misteriosas figuras que se aprecian en su fachada:
Corria el año 1220 Toledo contaba con un alcalde corrupto, que tenía atemorizada a la ciudad. Sometía a sus habitantes a grandes impuestos y deshonraba a las jovenes de las que se encaprichada con la la falsa promesa de desposarlas. Muchas fueron las que se quitaron la vida al ver incumplida la palabra de este tirano.
En aquellos días el rey Fernando III el santo se encontraba la plaza de Zocodover atendiendo las peticiones y quejas de sus súbditos. Sin embargo, nadie se atrevió a denunciar la situación por miedo a las represalias.
Cuando el rey estaba dispuesto a dar por terminada la audiencia del dia, una joven se acercó a el y llorando, se arrodilló a sus pies pidiendo justicia. Posteriormente sería otra jovencita, casi era una niña, la que denunciara el ultraje del infame Alcalde.
El valor de ambas inspiró al resto de toledanos que se volcaron a denunciar los sucesivos abusos. El rey viendo la palidez en la cara del Fernando Gomez se dio cuenta que todas las acusaciones eran ciertas y decidió ajusticiarlo en el momento y ejecutarlo.
Cuenta la leyenda que el rey ordenó esculpir en la fachada de la Puerta del Sol la figura de las dos jovenes sujetando una bandeja de plata con la cabeza del alcalde.
Sin embargo y para vuestra tranquilidad os diré que esta historia no es verdadera. Lo que hay incrustado encima de los arcos de herradura es en realidad un sarcofago romano y las figuras representan la negación de San Pedro.
Y ahora un dato curioso: ¿sabiais que el nombre de esta puerta viene del medallón de su fachada? en el aparecen el sol y la luna sobre una escena que representa la imposición de la casulla a San Ildefonso por parte de la Virgen María?

Toledo is an ancient city near Madrid. The walled old city is a tourist attraction as it is easy to reach by bus on a day trip from the Spanish capital.
We start our afternoon tour in the lower part near the ruins of the Convento do San Pablo. Using the long escalators there we get up to the old town from where we have a nice view.
Our walk on this rainy afternoon covers some main sites like the Puerta del Sol and main square though mostly the streets. Those narrow streets give a good impression of the old city layout and architecture while the rainy weather kept most tourists away today. We also see the Alcázar de Toledo - the royal palace - though from the outside with yet another nice view over the plains of Castilla-La Mancha.
The rain gets a bit heavier so a few parts of the city have to wait for another visit. We return to the viewpoint Mirador de La Granja near the escalators.
I'll see when a summer walk in this part works out. Toledo was a nice and easy trip from Madrid.

* 2 mins from the tube station CALLAO - Convent Monasterio de las Descalzas Reales founded in1559 by Joan of Austria. Former palace of King Charles I of Spain and Isabel of Portugal, now a fantastic museum !
* Puerta del Sol - tube same name - Here you can find the most popular and oldest bakery La Mallorquina from 1894.
* Calle de Rompelanzas - 2 mins from CALLAO tube station, the shortest street in Madrid !
* Plaza Mayor - old town square 3 mins from tube station P del Sol with quirky and lovely old shops, bars and restaurants. Origin from 15C, both bull fights and autos de fe took place here during the 17th Century.
* Calle de Cuchilleros (where before knives were produced and sharpened) still at Plaza Mayor, this is one of the 9 exits and it takes you to many interesting buildings, flamenco bars and shops.
* Calzados LOBO, calle Toledo 30, old traditional shoe shop a must visit !!! Founded 1897 and since then run by the Lobo family.
* Queue of madrilenos waiting for their turn to buy a winning ticket in the huge Spanish Christmas Lottery El Gordo at the famous shop La Manolita .
*Calle Los Jardines off La Montera.
* Calle Montera or La Montera, busy street, the old shops are mostly gone and the oldest profession is working already at 4 in the afternoon.

Bienvenidos al tour de las Luces de Navidad Madrid 2018. Es la segunda parte de la pequeña lista de reproducción Navidad en madrid. En esta ocasión, nuestro recorrido empieza en la Plaza de la Puerta del Sol, pasa por la renovada calle de Gran Vía y llega a la gran Plaza Mayor de Madrid, donde han puesto uno de los árboles. Tambiñen incluye algunas tomas de la Diosa de Cibeles y el Palacio de Cibeles.
Las luces de Navidad de Madrid se han convertido en una gran atracción para residentes y viajeros en esta hermosa época del año. S aún no has podido darte un paseo por la capital de España para disfrutar del ambiente navidaño que ya se puede ver en la ciudad, puedes verlo, cada vez que quieras, en el canal de Olivier Rodriguez.
