Going to Palawan this year I had to visit the Underground River in Sabang, Puerto Princesa. Or fully called: the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park.
We go by boat, and take the jungle tour (monkey trail) back.

NOTE! If you’re a foreigner and you try to book a room in Sabang – the Sabang in PUERTO GALERA is a different one from the one in PUERTO PRINCESA. You might end up booking a room in a totally different place, so please be careful

Going from Port Barton to the Underground River will only take you half a day by mini van and tricycle. After arriving in Sabang I check in at the hotel it’s time for a little walk around town.

There are a lot of resorts in here, for every budget. Please do realize this Sabang is NOT the same as the Sabang in Puerto Galera! I found fellow tourists booking a room in the wrong place, ending up paying twice.
Well the main attraction around here, of course, is the Underground River. Attracting many locals and foreigners every day. It’s best to go early in the morning. You’ll be first in line, avoiding hours of waiting! Remember the desk opens at 8.
You will need to find a group of 6 people in total to share a boat. And when you’ve found your group, you’re good to go!

The sculptures passing by are amazing to see. Just imagine how long it would’ve taken for nature to create it exactly like you see it today. And this is only a small part of the entire river, which is 8.2 kilometers in total. New caves, river channels and even small waterfalls have been discovered quite recently. That makes me wonder: what more would there be hiding in here?

And then there’s daylight again! Well you could go back the same way you entered, but if you’re up for stretching your legs, you better go by jungle…

A UNESCO world heritage site in Palawan Philippines. After leaving south Palawan (Balabac) we headed north to Puerto Princesa to stay for a night before we went on to the popular Underground River tour.

The park is located in the Saint Paul Mountain Range on the western coast of the island, about 80 kilometres north of the city centre of Puerto Princesa, Palawan, and contains the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River. It is part of seven wonders of the world.

Puerto Princesa Underground River - Complete Tour
The Puerto Princesa Underground River also known as the St. Paul Underground River is an 8.2km long underground river. The river is located within the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park in the Philippines and was designated as one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature on January 28, 2012.The river flows underground through natural rock formations such as caves, stalactites, and stalagmites and tourists can travel the river on a fiberglass boat.
Mount St. Paul, where the PPUR is located was named by early British explorers after the famous St. Paul’s cathedral in London where the mountain’s dome looked like the cathedral’s dome.
The Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park was recognized by the United Nations Education, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as having cultural, historical, and scientific significance, and thus deserves international protection for the benefit of all humanity.
The National Park was declared a National Geological Monument in 2003 by the National Committee on Geological Sciences Philippines. The St. Paul karst limestone mountain range where the Underground River is located is about 30 million years old, with numerous caves and waterways.

Dupa ce am aterizat in Puerto Princesa, primul lucru pe care l-am facut a fost sa rezervam turul catre Underground River. Auzisem despre el, dar fara sa ne documentam foarte bine, asa ca trebuia sa ii facem o vizita :).
Van-ul a venit de dimineata, ne-a dus in port apoi ne-am asteptat randul pentru bangka si am ajuns. Auzisem ca in padurea de langa Undergound River sunt maimute, serpi, dragonasi - cu care chiar am vazut poze la alti calatori din hotelul nostru cu care am vorbit apoi, insa noi credem ca am ajuns prea dimineata ca macar una din animalele despre care auzisem sa se fi trezit si sa ne taie calea.
Pana si cand am inceput turul de 45 de minute cu barca pe raul subteran in pestera ne-au anuntat ca trebuie sa facem liniste si sa nu scoatem niciun sunet sa nu trezim liliecii care dorm in pestera.
Inainte de a te urca in barca primesti un device audio cu o singura casca in care ti se prezinta pas cu pas (vasla cu vasla) fiecare metru si formatiune din pestera cu multe detalii pretioase. Ghidul din barca are o lanterna care simultan cu turul audio iti ghideaza privirea catre lucrurile fascinante pe care pestera le ascunde.
Trebuia sa tinem gura inchisa din cauza mai multor factori: sa nu speriem liliecii, sa nu facem contact cu picaturile de apa ca pot provoca infectii sau greturi si sa nu fim atacati de vreo bomba lansata de putinii lilieci care se trezisera cat timp eram in vizita.
Underground River este un tur pe care trebuie sa il faci daca ajungi in Palawan pentru ca este unic.

Underground River Puerto Princesa Tour - Last Day In Palawan
From El Nido ( we went back to Puerto Princesa for the Underground River Tour (still included in the tour package we availed). Here's more info on the tour package:
0:11 - Casa Mila Inn (our accommodation in Puerto Princesa, Palawan). It's a very nice hotel; has friendly staff)
0:36 - Breakfast included (we got danggit and egg plus coffee/juice)
0:53 - a local selling us pearls outside Casa Mila
0:57 - a quick stopover to get some OFF lotion, UGR has lots of mosquitoes.
1:11 - trying out local delicacies in Puerto Princesa
1:30 - arrived at Sabang Wharf
1:47 - the start of boat travel to the Underground River
2:02 - arrived at the Underground River
2:08 - wild money at Underground River
2:20 - the start of the Underground River tour
2:30 - amazing stalactites and stalagmites formation inside the cave
2:49 - asking my buddies about their experience on the tour
2:57 - lunch buffet at Gusto Grill
3:12 - we've sneaked some bananas from the buffet HHAHA
3:26 - we also joined the Mangrove Paddleboat Tour (300 pesos each), which is still in the Sabang Wharf. The tour operator took us there but we have to pay the tour on our own.
4:30 - After checking out at Casa Mila Inn, we walked around two to three minutes to check in at Marianne Hotel. I decided to book this one because they have a breakfast buffet and free airport transfer (besides the fact that it's only a couple of walks away from Casa Mila).
4:36 - Later in the evening, we've tried the crocodile dish and tamilok at Kinabuch, a popular restaurant in Puerto Princesa.
5:05 - The morning we've tried the buffet at Marianne and had a last minute shopping at the Pasalubong Center.
