Puerto Viejo de Talamanca is a bit of an undiscovered beach town gem on the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica.
We spent a day showing you around starting out with our great open air AirBNB in the middle of the jungle just outside of the town.
We then heading into town, walking along Black Beach (Playa Negra), flying our drone while we go. On our way into town we discover in old barge in the water, sunken to create a breakwater.
After walking along the water for awhile, we head into town to get some lunch and find a cute cafe/bookstore called Cafe Rico.
Afterwards we head back to the water where we spot a sunken sailing ship just off the shore.

Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica
Puerto Viejo de Talamanca is a town in southeast Costa Rica, on the Caribbean coast. It’s known for the Salsa Brava surf break and beaches like black-sand Playa Negra. The Jaguar Rescue Center rehabilitates wild cats and other animals. Gandoca-Manzanillo National Wildlife Refuge has rainforest, wetlands and mangroves. To the north, Cahuita National Park protects a large coral reef and has a shipwreck dive site.
Puerto Viejo is the largest tourist destination on Costa Rica's small Caribbean coast. Other nearby communities are Cahuita, Cocles, Punta Uva and Manzanillo . The vibe here is laid-back, Caribbean-style with a great diversity of people living here and visiting here.
Playa Negra, the paradise for surfers.
Known for its world-class waves and breaks, Playa Negra is a surfer's paradise. Famous as the filming location for the cult classic, Endless Summer II, this beach sits along the northwestern region of Guanacaste along the northern Pacific coast. But this small beach community has more to offer than just its surfing breaks. From great hotels, resorts and budget lodges to renowned cafes and local delicacies, Playa Negra has a little something to offer every visitor. Enjoy the laid-back Tico lifestyle here while escaping the hustle of other surf-centric communities along the Pacific Coast. Those staying here will also be just a short drive away from Marino Las Baulas National Park, which is a famous nesting ground for the leatherback turtles.

Clear water, coconut palms, great surf and a laid-back Caribbean atmosphere make Puerto Viejo a favorite among travelers. Located on the Caribbean Coast, about an hour south of Limon, Puerto Viejo is the center of activity between the smaller villages of Cahuita and Manzanillo. The relaxed, seaside town is framed by jungle, turquoise seas, banana plantations and scenic rivers. Amazing BEACHES and FOOD in Puerto Viejo COSTA RICA | TRAVEL VLOG
It's another beautiful day so we decided to search for some good food in Puerto Viejo Costa Rica and discover what beaches are on offer in the area!
First stop, a burger joint that's always busy in Puerto Viejo, La Terraza. It's well worth stopping by to check this place out for gourmet burgers that aren't too expensive. Next we explore Playa Cocles, a stunning beach about 10 minutes out of town if you're not keen on the messy black sand of Playa Negra.

My boyfriend and I took an awesome trip to Costa Rica recently. We stayed in Punta Uva, and then rented bikes and went to four different beaches. We went to Cocles, Puerto Viejo, Manzanillo and Playa Chiquita.
Living In the Puerto Viejo Area (Punta Uva and Playa Chiquita, 2017)
We cover the south-eastern area of Costa Rica, from Puerto Viejo to Manzanillo. Puerto Viejo and, to a lesser extent, Manzanillo, will appeal to the youthful and those in the mindset of partying and chilling with a few rums, beers and spliffs. Punta Uva is definitely the best beach experience in the region and the closest it gets to a typical white sand beach of the Caribbean. Playa Cocles is the nearest good beach to Puerto Viejo and is used for surfing, but the waves are tame compared with Costa Rica's Pacific side. Playa Chiquita is between Uva and Cocles both in distance and stature. We snorkelled in Punta Uva, but Chiquita also has a reef to explore. You have only to go about 10 metres to have a good snorkel in Punta Uva. The water depth varies, and there are a few good small canyons to view depth. We saw a sting ray and a number of fish species, which made it worthwhile.

A cool 8 years has passed since I was last in Puerto Viejo in Costa Rica and not much has changed. It is a little neater, with a little more colour, and thankfully, sunnier, as the my last visit to Costa Rica and Puerto Viejo was during an enormous storm.
This time though, the weather is smiling down on Costa Rica and myself, and so I decided to rent a bicycle and cycle down from Puerto Viejo, along the Costa Rican coast to the other towns on the Caribbean side of Costa Rica.
South of Puerto Viejo you have Cocles, Punta Uva and ending about 13 km down the road in the tiny town of Manzanillo. A quick bite to eat here, a sit down and swim at the beach before cycling back to Puerto Viejo.
If you have ever dreamed about visiting Costa Rica and have imagined what the cities and towns are like, you are probably thinking of lush jungle, beautiful ocean, great waves, relaxed vibe and that is exactly what the whole country is.
Stay tuned, more to come from Costa Rica and the areas surrounding Puerto Viejo before I head north to the Pacific Coast and Tamarindo!

Fin de semana en el Caribe de mi país, El mar estaba muy bravo, fuimos y buscamos la playa mas tranquila para disfrutar y por supuesto documentarla. Para mi la mejor es Punta Uva, siempre he estado acostumbrado a ir a las tradicionales y no conocía esta maravillosa playa. Sin embargo tambien en Puerto viejo hay unas piscinas naturales que están solo buenas.
