Ketchikan - Halibut Fishing

This is the experience many anglers dream of when planning an Alaskan vacation, fishing for the largest flatfish in the world, the Pacific Halibut. Imagine catching your first wild halibut with your friends or family and the bragging rights that will come with sharing this delectable fish back home. Unlike many other Alaska destinations, Ketchikan fishing is in protected waters, a short ride from the marina. No matter your skill level, you'll fish like a local, with a Penn rod and Penn 114 reel in your own two hands, working the sandy flats, drifting with the current, jigging in waters as deep as 300 feet. Spend the day with an experienced Alaskan guide, in pursuit of the elusive halibut, learning the secrets of fishing circle hooks, working the tides and battling your leviathan. You can choose to custom process your halibut, as well as purchase a selection of local Alaskan seafood to include with the shipment of your bounty home. Note: Participants must be at least 5 years of age, weigh a minimum of 30 lbs and a maximum of 300 lbs. Deck or rubber soled shoes must be worn on board. We recommend that you wear warm, layered clothing. Rain gear, rubber boots, comfortable float jackets, wool socks, hat and gloves. Halibut fishing equipment and tackle are provided. Actual fishing duration is 4 1/2 hours. Alaska State Law requires a fishing license that can be purchased in cash at the outfitting room for $20. You'll need a credit card in order to have your catch processed and sent home (U.S. only). Fish cannot be stored on board the ship.
Exclusive Alaska Guided Fishing & Wilderness Dining
Experience an authentic fishing excursion in the unspoiled wilderness of Alaska's coastline. You'll be outfitted with waterproof boots, bib overalls, hooded jacket, hat and gloves. Then, glide into a breathtaking landscape aboard a stable, custom, 19-foot skiff. Cast a line, and what you catch will become the fresh basis of a gourmet campsite meal! With only five guests per boat, your professional guide customizes the excursion to fit your interests and skill level. Along the way, you may view seals, eagles, whales, birds, porpoise, spawning salmon, and even bears. With quality fishing gear, hone your skills landing a variety of rockfish, cod, or Pacific halibut. After fishing, the skiff heads to a remote wilderness campsite, where a crackling fire awaits in the rain forest of ancient cedars and spruce. Here, you'll enjoy a gourmet meal of your own freshly caught fish, served atop a saffron-infused, bouillabaisse-inspired stew (no shellfish). Savor sourdough rolls with garlic-aioli spread, a signature rhubarb and blueberry bread pudding, and steaming mugs of coffee or hot chocolate. You'll leave having experienced the Alaskan way of life. Note: Participants must be at least 5 years of age, weigh at least 30 lbs. and no more than 300 lbs. and be physically active. We recommended that you wear warm, layered clothing. Actual fishing duration varies from two to three hours. Tour requires negotiating uneven terrain and the skiff is open to the elements. Alaska State Law requires a fishing license that can be purchased in cash at the outfitting room for $20.
IRR at work in Ketchikan Alaska
The City of Ketchikan has used IRR for patching potholes since last summer. Our crews are continually amazed at how well it has performed. We have not had a single patch ravel or come loose this winter. It is even better than the original asphalt.
The winter freeze thaw cycles with rain and snow has not phased the material at all. Chains do not even marr or scratch the patch. Overall, we couldn't be more pleased with IRR and we plan to have plenty of material on hand from now on.
Thanks for developing this amazing product. It has saved us a lot of money.
Regards,
Harvey Hansen

Honeymoon Day 03 Ketchikan
We made it to land! Woo Hoo! Ketchikan, Alaska, known as The Salmon Capitol of the World, was our first stop. We were happy to be on land. This town is known for fishing and also for being really wet, averages 150 inches of rain a year! And that doesnt include the snow. Luckily for us, it was an unusually sunny day and a temperature of about 65 degrees. I guess we lucked out.
Our day was planned out, go on a horse drawn carriage ride around town to get our bearings. Then, go on foot to find the places that we went by that looked interesting.
Ketchikan also has the worlds largest collection of standing totem poles. Youll see a couple of those in the video.
Also in the video, is Married Mans Trail. This back alley wooden walk way was once a muddy hidden alternative path for naughty fisherman (the married ones!) that didnt want to be seen or be caught by their wives as they were going into the brothels. The brothels also sit atop wooden docks and when the tide would get high enough, these fishermen could also row right under the docks and climb up hidden trap doors under the brothels.
As far as nature goes, this place is beautiful. It sits within the Tongass Rainforest/National Park. And as youll see, the town is full of greenery, streams, and nature. There are also many bald eagles flying around town. Youll see a grown adult and a young one in the video. The distinctive white head and tail feathers do not appear until Bald Eagles are about 4 to 5 years old.
So, here is my quick montage of Ketchikan set to the song The Crane Wife 3″ by the Decemberists.
