Places to see in ( Hamburg - Germany ) Rathausmarkt
Rathausmarkt (lit. City Hall Marketplace) is the central square of Hamburg, Germany, located in the Altstadt (old town) quarter right in front of the Hamburg Rathaus. Framed by shopping arcades of Alsterarkaden at Alsterfleet, there are many events taking place here, amongst them open air cinema in summer, the Stuttgarter Weindorf (Stuttgart wine village), the music festival of Rockspektakel, and the Christmas market in December.
The Rathausmarkt was built after the Great Fire of Hamburg in 1842, which destroyed also the old city hall near the bridge of Trostbrücke and the buildings near the new city hall, with the exception of the building of Hamburg Stock Exchange. Shortly before the fire, the old St. John's monastery and also the old church of St. John, located on the southern end of the square, which were situated in the area of today's Rathausmarkt, had been demolished. The square was created pursuing a plan and designed after the model of Piazza San Marco in Venice, which is also opening to the waterfront. The new city hall was completed in 1897.
In 1933, the Rathausmarkt had been renamed to Adolf-Hitler-Platz (Adolf Hitler square), as many squares and streets in Germany at that time. It was renamed after the end of World War II in 1945. Until the 1970s the square was a transport hub for the Trams in Hamburg. After tram operation had ceased in 1978, the square was fully renovated and surfaced with red granite until 1982 under the aegis of mayor Hans-Ulrich Klose, wherefore it was jokingly dubbed Red Square.
The former monument for William I, which had been erected on the square in 1903, was removed in 1930. The remaining parts can be found at Holstenwall/Sievekingplatz today. The two large flagpoles are remnants of this ensemble. Also today, the Heinrich Heine Monument, made by Waldemar Otto, can be found on the square. Hannes Wader wrote a song about in 1989.

Xmas Market Rathausmarkt, Hamburg, Germany 2016, 4K
The Historic Christmas Market on the Rathausmarkt will open its doors from 21 November to 23 December 2016. The Christmas market organized by Roncalli takes place under the motto art instead of commerce.
The popular and well-known Christmas market in front of the historic backdrop of the city hall is run by Roncalli. It is under the motto art instead of commerce. In addition to a toy alley, there are crafts and wood carvings from Tyrol and much more to be admired and of course also to buy. Instead of popcorn, there are Nuremberg gingerbread houses, instead of plastic arts craftsmanship and fancy gift ideas. There is also a separate Rathausmarkt-mulled wine. The Hamburg and Hamburg visitors love the market: almost three million visitors are counted year by year.

Luftaufnahmen Hamburg - Rathausmarkt Hamburg

5. Altona - Ottensen Hamburg
In the pre-Christmas season, the smell of mulled wine, almonds and fir sprigs immerse the Altona district of Ottensen in a very special atmosphere, and it attracts Hamburg residents with the whole family to a convivial stroll through Ottensen Christmas market. The colourful and varied Christmas market with over 40 lovingly designed huts is considered one of the most authentic markets in the city, with many gift ideas, traditional punch and mulled wine stands as well as culinary treats from around the world to put you into the mood for the lovely advent season.
Hamburg has long been famous for its food markets - the fish markets have been exported around the world - but the second-largest city in Germany also does a good line in Christmas Markets.
Hamburg's main Weihnachtsmarkt is held in front of the Town Hall with a large Christmas tree marking the location.
But there are a variety of other 'styles' of market dotted around the city, with for example the 'Santa Pauli' festival on the Reeperbahn offering the mindblowing concept of the world's first erotic Christmas market.

Jungfernstieg - Walking Tour, Hamburg, Germany, 4K UHD
For the largest part, Jungfernstieg lies within the Hamburg quarter of Neustadt, though its eastern end also reaches into Hamburg-Altstadt. In total, Jungfernstieg stretches some 600 m along the southern, south-western shore of Lake Binnenalster and continues further to Gänsemarkt. On the lake-side, it is framed by Ballindamm to the east and Neuer Jungfernstieg to the west. On the built-up land-side, Jungfernstieg intersects with a number of streets: in Altstadt with Bergstraße, Plan and Reesendamm; the latter carries on along the shore of Kleine Alster (Little Alster) towards Rathausmarkt. At Reesendammbrücke, Jungfernstieg crosses the Alster into Neustadt. It goes past Neuer Wall and Große Bleichen, two of Hamburg's leading shopping streets. At the intersection with Neuer Jungfernstieg, Jungfernstieg forms a Y-junction with Colonnaden, another shopping street. See more:

Town Hall Square - Walking Tour, Hamburg, Germany 4K UHD
Hamburg Town Hall was built from 1886 to 1897 and with its impressive architecture dominates the centre of the city. The magnificent sandstone building houses the city's senate and parliament.
After Hamburg Town Hall burned to the ground in 1842, the city council temporarily moved into provisional premises - for 55 years! The new Town Hall was inaugurated in 1897, has 647 rooms and stands on over 4,000 oak piles. In stark contrast to the restrained Hanseatic style, the Town Hall is conspicuous due to its elaborately decorated façade, flanked by a total of 20 statues of emperors. The following is written in Latin above the main door: The descendants shall seek worthily to maintain the freedom achieved by their forebears. The ornate wrought iron gate of the main entrance door leads into the entrance hall which is supported by 16 sandstone pillars painted with 68 portraits of worthy Hamburg citizens. The staircase was made from Sardinian marble and shows the course of human life. The debating chamber is designed rather simply and Parliament meets here every second Tuesday at 3.00pm
Portraits of former speakers of parliament hand in the adjacent Bürgersaal where citizens are received. The Kaisersaal (imperial hall) - named because of the visit by Kaiser Wilhelm II at the opening of the North Sea-Baltic Canal - has a striking ceiling painting that symbolises merchant shipping under the German flag. The walls are decorated with wall coverings made of pressed leather. The Tower Hall accommodates celebrations on special occasions and receptions. Guests make entries into the Golden Book in the Mayor's Hall with its enormous fireplace. A painting hangs here that depicts the inauguration of the Town Hall in 1897. The Phoenix Hall is named after the phoenix above the fireplace, which is meant to symbolise Hamburg's renaissance after the great fire of 1842. In the Senate chamber, the only light passes through the large glass roof: This symbolises the ancient Germanic custom that the council meets in the open air. The Grand Ballroom is 46 metres long, 18 metres wide and 15 metres high. Five huge paintings depict the history of Hamburg from 800 to 1900 and 62 city coats of arms of the old Hanseatic League decorate the walls. The three chandeliers with 278 lights each weigh 1,500 kilograms!
