Shots Fired Into South Daytona FL Republican Party Office
Volusia County Republican Party officials in South Daytona, Florida, found their headquarters’ windows shot out Monday morning, according to police.
Along with glass scattered in front of its entrance, at least four bullet holes were discovered inside the office.
Law enforcement is investigating the scene, where the office is part of a strip mall close by the Reed Canal Park. South Daytona police Capt. Mark Cheatham says no one was injured during the vandalism.
Cheatham believes the shooting likely occurred between 4 p.m. EST Sunday and early Monday morning. “At this point we can confirm that at least four rounds were fired into the building,” the police captain told reporters. “We are working to see if we can get video from nearby businesses but so far we have no witnesses.”
“We have never had any kind of vandalism before at a Republican Headquarters,” Volusia County Republican Party chairman Tony Ledbetter told the Daytona Beach News-Journal. “It’s a small strip center and no other business was vandalized, so it was obviously politically motivated.”
Reacting to the incident, Florida State Rep. Tom Leek issued the following statement: “The state of our political discourse in America is an embarrassment to all parties and those involved in the political process. Neither Democrats nor Republicans own the high ground on this issue. Sooner or later, both parties are going to have to stop suffering idiots within their own party, and cast them out on their own.”
Police have yet to identify any eyewitnesses and suspects in relation to the incident.

Doris Leeper Park Otters
Otters in the park in New Smyrna Beach, FL
Driving on Florida State Road 415 from Port Orange to Sanford
State Road 415 begins in Seminole County at State Road 46 just east of the Orlando-Sanford International Airport and heads straight north. The only intersection of any importance within the county is CR 415(Celery Avenue), a county connecting spur which leads to downtown Sanford at US 17/92.[3] Here the road shifts to the northeast and crosses the St. Johns River over the Osteen Bridge, where it enters Volusia County and runs through the Lake Monroe Conservation Area, which it leaves at the intersection of Reed Ellis Road. In Osteen SR 415 serves as the terminus for three separate County Roads; CR 5758, CR 4164, and CR 4162 respectively. Here, it turns straight north again until it approaches CR 4145 and then curves northeast again, as it passes through swampland and over dry creeks and canals before running through Alamana where it runs near the west side of Lake Ashby, crosses a bridge over the Lake Ashby Canal, and serves as the address for the privatetly-owned Leffler Airport.
The road turns at a slight left angle but still remains northeast as it terminates State Road 44 east of New Smyrna Speedway in Samsula. However, it continues to run north as County Road 415(Tomoka Farms Road), which runs west of the city limits of New Smyrna Beach and Port Orange. From here, the road intersects CR 4118, serves as the western terminus of CR 421, a county extension of SR 421, passes over I-4 with no access, just before it terminates at I-95, and finally terminates at a former wye with U.S. Route 92 and CR 4068 in Daytona Beach, near the Daytona Flea and Farmers Market.

Good Harbor Beach November Sunrise Featuring the Great Blue Heron and Seagulls
Notes on Good Harbor Beach November Sunrise
One morning in late November I followed the elusive Great Blue Heron up and down the length of the salt marsh creek while a stunning sunrise unfolded in the background. The dance of the lone heron feeding was as hauntingly beautiful as is the ebb and flow of Fauré's Pavane through its series of musical climaxes, and seemed perfectly choreographed to the intensely focused movements of the heron.
Pavane in F-sharp minor, Opus 50, was composed by Gabriel Fauré in 1887. Fauré's Pavane obtains it slow processional rhythm from the Spanish and Italian court dance of the same name. The earliest known pavane was published in Venice in 1508 by Ottaviano Putrucci and is a dignified partner dance. The original music seems to have been fast, but like many dances, became slower over time. For this film I looked for a recording approximately 8 minutes in length, although Fauré's Pavane is more typically six minutes long. The origin of the term is unknown; possibilities include from the Spanish pavón meaning peacock.
Earlier in the month of November I had filmed three herons feeding simultaneously—the most I typically see at Good Harbor are two at a time. That footage is lost, and perhaps it is just as well because it may not have been the most interesting as the focal length was some distance in order to capture all three in the frame. I found it captivating to see this lone heron feeding alongside the seagulls and ducks, not an event I have often seen. Whenever a dog approached or some other imagined disturbance startled the birds, all would take flight; the seagulls and ducks dispersed and the heron invariably headed to the opposite end of the marsh. This went on for several hours, back and forth, up and down the salt marsh. The Great Blue Heron is majestic in flight, with deep powerful wing beats, and a wingspan of five and a half feet to six and a half feet. Oftentimes difficult to find in the cameras' lens, the heron's subdued blue-gray and brown plumage is perfect camouflage against the rocky shoreline, particularly in the pre-dawn light and early hours of sunrise.
I looked for the herons again after that late date of November 29th, but I think they had all departed for warmer shores further south.
If you stay until the end, look for a funny clip after the credits have rolled. I couldn't figure out how to make this most ordinary of body functions fit with the heron's beautiful dance.
