Kyoto Walk - Sanzenin Temple (三千院) - 4K
In this video we’ll show you Sanzenin Temple (三千院), Kyoto.
The Ohara area has been known as Gyozan for more than a thousand years. It is the birthplace of Shomyo (Buddhist sutra chanting) and known as a sacred spot in the belief of Jodo (Pure Land Buddhism) among Nembutsu-Hijiri (prayer mendicant priests). Sanzen-in Temple was originally established as a hermitage by Saicho (767-822), or Dengyo Daishi, when he founded Enryakuji Temple on Mt. Hiei, Shiga Prefecture. The temple, also known as Kajii Monzeki or Nashimoto Monzeki, is one of the five Tendai Monzeki temples, and certain members of the imperial family served here in the priesthood throughout the temple’s history. It was officially named Sanzen-in in 1871, according to documentation written by Emperor Reigen in the Jibutsu-do hall of Kajii Goten (the temple building), following the departure of an imperial prince priest from the priesthood.

京都 八坂神社~建仁寺塔頭霊源院「甘露庭」(甘茶の庭) amacha (Hydrangea serratavar. thunbergii ) in garden at Kenninji

A New Dimension to Thinner Bachi
In Japan, I had the great pleasure to stay with the incredibly talented Aomori champion, Fujii Reigen! In our jam session, (in the video, he demonstrates how his chord techniques can back up Tsugaru Jonkara Bushi) I noticed that all of his bachi are very, very thin! Very easy to use and no discomfort!
I have two good quality bachi. One is my favorite, and the other, though good quality, is just uncomfortable to use. So much so that I would risk taking my favorite bachi traveling simply because the other was too cumbersome to use. Well, when I got back from Japan, I remembered the ease of Fujii san's bachi and thought, Why don't I shave my bachi down the same way as his? So I went to the belt sander, slowly took off a total of 4~5mm and tadaaa!! Instantly far easier to use!
Though I still like my favorite bachi the most, my other bachi is now very comfortable to use and wouldn't hesitate to use in performance. As I've said before, adjusting the shape of your bachi to match your hand profile is a very worthwhile endeavor. Just make sure to work slowly and carefully!

Sakura,Hoko-temple,Hamamatsu,Japan

-- PRESENTATION: TAKENOUCHI RYŪ TORIDE KOSHINOMAWARI --
Takenouchi Ryū was founded by Takenouchi Nakatsukasa Tayū Hisamori, lord of Ichinose Castle in Hagagō in the Mimasaka Province (present Okayama Prefecture). It is said that he received the initial Toride Gokajō (restraining techniques) and the Koshinomawari Kogusoku (grappling techniques with small weapons) from the gods.
During the 6th year of the Genna Era (1620), Hisamori’s son Hisakatsu received from Emperor Gomizuno-o the title of Hinoshita Toride Kaizan (“Creator of the Toride on this Earth”). This title was renewed for his own son Hisayoshi by Emperor Reigen in the 3rd year of Kanbun (1663), with the authorization to use from then and forever the name Tōichirō. The curriculum of the Takenouchi Ryū was formulated and completed under those three masters.
For more than 400 years, the Takenouchi Ryū has seen the creation of 30 or so branches and instructed a myriad of disciples. It has been preserved and transmitted to the present day.
