Taksim Square:
Taksim Square (Turkish: Taksim Meydanı), situated in the European part of Istanbul, Turkey, is a major tourist and leisure district famed for its restaurants, shops, and hotels. It is considered the heart of modern Istanbul, with the central station of the Istanbul Metro network. Taksim Square is also the location of the Monument of the Republic (Turkish: Cumhuriyet Anıtı) which was crafted by Pietro Canonica and inaugurated in 1928. The monument commemorates the 5th anniversary of the foundation of the Republic of Turkey in 1923, following the Turkish War of Independence. The word Taksim means division or distribution. The Taksim square was originally the point where the main water lines from the north of Istanbul were collected and branched off to other parts of the city (hence the name.) This use for the area was established by Sultan Mahmud I. The square takes its name from the Ottoman era stone reservoir which is located in this area. Additionally, the word Taksim can refer to a special improvisational musical form in Turkish classical music that is guided by the Makam system. Another significant building that once stood on the square was the 19th century Taksim Artillery Barracks (Taksim Topçu Kışlası, which later became the Taksim Stadium), but it was demolished in 1940 during the construction works of the Taksim Park (Taksim Gezi Parkı.) Taksim is a main transportation hub and a popular destination for both tourists and the native population of Istanbul. İstiklal Caddesi (Independence Avenue), a long pedestrian shopping street, ends at this square, and a nostalgic tram runs from the square along the avenue, ending near the Tünel (1875) which is the world's second-oldest subway line after London's Underground (1863). Surrounding Taksim Square are numerous travel agencies, hotels, restaurants, pubs, and international fast food chains such as Pizza Hut, McDonald's, Subway, and Burger King. It is also home to some of Istanbul's grandest hotels including the InterContinental, the Ritz-Carlton, and The Marmara Hotel.Taksim is also a favourite location for public events such as parades, New Year celebrations, or other social gatherings.Atatürk Cultural Center (Atatürk Kültür Merkezi), a multi-purpose cultural center and opera house, is also located at Taksim Square.NTV television had its morning news studio on Taksim Square for a number of broadcasting seasons, before moving to its new studio in 2011. Taksim Square is an important hub for public transport in Istanbul. In addition to serving as the main transfer point for the municipal bus system, Taksim Square is also the terminus of the Hacıosman-4. Levent-Taksim-Yenikapı subway line of the Istanbul Metro. The İstiklal Avenue-Tünel nostalgic tram line also starts in Taksim.Taksim's position was given an extra boost on June 29, 2006, when the new Kabataş-Taksim Funicular line F1 connecting the Taksim Metro station with the Kabataş tramway station and Seabus port was opened, allowing people to ascend to Taksim in just 110 seconds.
ISTANBUL TURKEY: Cihangir Walking Tour
We created a walking tour around the popular Cihangir neighborhood in Istanbul Turkey. It took us to the very popular Taksim Square.
Taksim Square is considered the heart of modern Istanbul. And in the heart of the square is the Republic Monument constructed in 1928 to commemorate the 5th anniversary of Republic of Turkey.
On the square is a new Mosque. Construction on the mosque in Taksim square began in 2017 and was and still is very controversial. Many see the building of the mosque and stamping a religious identity on the square that was paying tribute to Ataturk, who fought for a secular state.
After that, we stopped by Ağa Hamami. Ağa hamamı is an authentic Turkish bath built in the mid-1400s. It claims to be the oldest Hamami still in use.
Next, we went on the famous walking street, Istiklal where we went to Çiçek Pasaji, an old theater turned hidden passageway of shops and restaurants.
Of course, no tour of this area would be complete without stopping at Galata Tower. The original Galata tower was built as a lighthouse. It controlled the northern end of the massive sea chain that closed the entrance to the Golden Horn, an inlet that joins Bosphorus Strait with the Sea of Marmara.
And we end this tour at Galata Bridge. Galata Bridge is the first recorded bridge over the Golden Horn in Istanbul. It was built during the reign of Justinian the Great in the 6th century.
We hope you enjoy this tour as much as we did.

Join David as he shows you around the top 15 places to see in Istanbul! Istanbul is one of the only transcontinental cities on the planet, spreading across Europe and Asia Minor. As Turkey’s largest city, Istanbul is a bustling hub of culture, history and gastronomy – a cosmopolitan capital in every sense.
David begins in the oldest part of the city, the Sultanahmet District. He begins in the Hippodrome (circus), which served as the center of public life for the Greek, Roman, and Byzantine citizens. Present-day Sultan Ahmed Square has a handful of surviving remnants from ancient times.
Near Sultan Ahmed Square are two of Turkey’s most visited attractions, steps from one another – the Ayia Sofia (Hagia Sophia) and Blue Mosque. The Ayia Sofia is now a museum, but was built as an Eastern Orthodox Basilica in 535 A.D. It was a Christian church for over 900 years before the Ottomans used it as a Mosque for another 481 years. It was the largest house of worship in the world for over 1,000 years!
Across the square is the Blue Mosque. Its name comes from the blue tiles used to decorate the interior. Nearby sits the stunning 15th century Topkapi Palace that served as the home and governmental seat for the Ottoman sultans until the 1850s. A tour will reveal beautiful stonework and intricately decorated staterooms, as well as a crown jewel and Imperial treasury exhibition.
After the palace, David takes us to the Archaeology Museum to show us some of what was uncovered in Istanbul. Perhaps the most impressive thing on display is the Sarcophagus of Alexander the Great with its detailed reliefs depicting Alexander’s life of successful conquering.
Not too far from the museum is the Basilica Cistern – a damp and dark subterranean cavern used to collect water for the city. The Medusa heads were likely stolen from a nearby Greco-Roman city to support the columns. Medusa’s face provided a warning against anyone who dared to tamper with the water supply.
The next day, David heads over to the 300-year-old Cağaloğlu Hamamı for a Turkish bath. This Hammam provides full-service spa treatments including scrubbing, steam baths, and massages. Definitely a MUST experience when in Istanbul.
David then heads to the shores of the Bosphorus for a scenic boat ride along the strait. From the water you’ll get panoramic vistas of the Istanbul skyline and get to enjoy view of other areas of this enormous city.
After arriving back on land, David heads to the Beyoğlu District to beautiful pedestrian-friendly Istiklal Street, or “Independence Avenue” for some lunch. It spans about 1.4 kilometers and is the perfect place for shopping and dining. You can walk or take the Nostalgic Tram in either direction. The end of Istiklal Street takes David into the heart of Istanbul, Taksim Square. In the center of the square is the Monument of the Republic (1928) commemorating the formation of the Turkish Republic in 1923.
Onto the Galata District to see a Whirling Dervish show at the Galata Museum. This 800-year old practice of spinning is used as a physical form of meditation. It is a mysterious and beautiful site to behold.
You can’t visit the Galata District and not notice the Galata Tower. It looks over Istanbul and provides 360-degree views of the city, the Bosphorus, Golden Horn and landmarks.
After all that sightseeing, David works up an appetite so he heads to the Karaköy waterfront to enjoy a cheap meal with a 5-star view. Nearby is the fish market. You can’t get to the Karaköy or Galata without crossing the Galata Bridge. From here you’ll see the skylines of both Sultanahmet and Galata districts.
Lastly, David goes out to one of the most exclusive entertainment complexes in the world. Reina sits along the Bosphorus and offers world-class dining, nightclubs, and beautiful ambiance. Dress to impress and make dinner reservations so you can stay after to party!

The memorial was built in October of 2002 by the Turkish Republic and the Beersheba Municipality in memory of 298 Turkish soldiers killed in battle in the city between the years 1914-1918. Israeli and Turkish flags are stationed nearby.
My name is Zahi Shaked
In 2000 I became a registered liscenced tourist guide.
My dedication in life is to pass on the ancient history of the Holy Land.
Following upon many years of travel around the world, which was highlighted by a very exciting emotional and soul-searching meeting with the Dalai Lama, I realized that I had a mission. To pass on the the history of the Holy Land, its religions, and in particular, the birth and development of Christianity.
In order to fulfill this calling in the best way possible, I studied in depth, visited, and personally experienced each and every important site of the ancient Christians. I studied for and received my first bachelors degree in the ancient history of the Holy Land, and am presently completing my studies for my second degree.(Masters)
Parralel to my studies, and in order to earn a living, I was employed for many years in advertising. What I learned there was how to attract the publics attention, generate and, increase interest, and assimilate information. All this I use as tools to describe, explain and deepen the interest in the sites that we visit. From my experience, I have learned that in this way, the Holy Land becomes more than just history, and that the large stones that we see scattered about in dissaray, join together one by one until they become - a Byzantine Church. This also happens when I lead a group of Pilgrims in the Steps of Jesus. We climb to the peak of Mount Precipice, glide over the land to the Sea of Galilee, land on the water and see the miracle which enfolds before us. This is a many faceted experience. Not only history which you will remember and cherish, but an experience which I hope will be inplanted in your hearts and minds, and will accompany you all the days of your life.

9:05 10.11.18 - Turkey stands still for Atatürk
Every year, on the anniversary of Atatürk's death, for a minute or two, Turkey stops what it's doing, and stands still out of respect for Atatürk, the founder of Turkey, who is often called the father of the Turks. It's a beautiful thing to watch, the most visible place to see it of course is on the freeway, where most of the cars stop, drivers get out, and stand at attention. - This video was taken from the Metrobüs pedestrian overpass west of Mecidiyeköy station, looking back towards Mecidiyeköy, Fulya, and Gayrettepe.
Military Museum (Askeri Muze),Harbiye,Istanbul
The Turkish Military Museum (Asker Müzesi) is located just north of Taksim, easily walkable. The military museum is an enormous 2 story building that houses countless military artifacts from Turkey's Byzantine and Ottoman past, as well as from the Republic. The top floor is a monument to the splendor of the Ottoman army. There are rooms full of armour, guns, swords, cavalry equipment, and a Turco-German friendship corner that commemorates the cooperation between the two during WWI. On the top floor there is also a room dedicated to Atatürk, as well as his old military school classroom. Also on the top floor is another of one of the most impressive sites, the giant chain that the Byzantines used to block off the Golden Horn during the Ottoman seige of Istanbul. The bottom floor contains an amazing display of captured flags from Italy, Britian, Byzantium, as well as others. There are also some of the imperial pavillions, as well as a giant wall in which are carved all the major battle of Turkish history, everything from Manzikiert, to the Seiges of Vienna, to Gallipoli. One of the main reasons to come to the military museum is to see a performance by the mehter who were the Ottoman military band, and supposedly the first military band in history. The band wears perfectly replicated uniforms, and plays the music exactly like it was over 5 centuries ago. The Asker Müzesi is definitely worth a trip for its historic value, because it is hardly crowded, and just because it so cheap. Although note that cameras require an extra fee.

4. Perge
This ancient city is also known as Perga, and it was once a grand city that served as the capital of Pamphylia Secunda, which is located on what is now the southwestern Mediterranean coast of Turkey near the city of Antalya. There’s an acropolis here that dates back to the Bronze Age, and there are many large ruins located in the area that visitors can see today. The city changed hands numerous times throughout the years, but the Romans, who took control of the city in 188 B.C., built most of the structures still seen today. These include ruins of a necropolis, a gymnasium, a public square, Roman baths, churches, temples, and even a theatre which could once hold around 15,000 people. There have also been many incredible sculptures discovered here, and beginning in 2003, many priceless mosaics were located around the city. The discoveries of the mosaics have led to the city being coined “Turkey’s second Zeugma,” with Zeugma being another famous site in Turkey where incredible mosaics have been found.
3. Hattusa
Hattusa was once the great capital city of the Hittite Empire, which can be found near what is Bogazkale, Turkey today. The city is one of the greatest and most important ruins of Turkey; thus, it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1986. The site was first settled around the sixth millennium B.C., and it became a trading post for some time. That is until the area was claimed by a Hittite-speaking king, who decided that it would make the perfect location for his home, and capital for the empire. The king changed the city’s name from Hattush to Hattusa, and he, himself, adopted the name Hattusili. At the height of the city, it covered nearly 0.7 square miles, and great walls surrounded it. There was an inner city and an outer city, both of which served different purposes, and many different types of structures and historical features can be seen in each today. The Hittite state and the city were destroyed around the same time as the Bronze Age collapsed—around 1200 B.C. The city was discovered in 1834 by Charles Texier, a French archaeologist, and one of the most important discoveries made there, the Bogazkoy Archive, shed much information on the lifestyle, laws, and thinking of the times.
2. Ephesus
This ancient Greek city was built on what was once the capital of Arzawa, a political entity, and a region located just 1.8 miles from what is now Selcuk in Turkey’s Izmir Province today. Ionian and Attic Greek colonists built the city during the 10th century B.C., and at one point was part of the Ionian League. Once the Roman Republic took control of Ephesus in 129 B.C., the city really flourished, and it gained a decent amount of fame from being so close to one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, the Temple of Artemis. Ephesus could have been where the Gospel of John was written, as it was one of the seven churches of Asia named in the Book of Revelation. It very recently became a UNESCO World Heritage Site—in 2015—and it’s the most complete Greco-Roman classical city on the planet as of now. Some of the main sites at Ephesus are the Temple of Artemis, the Library of Celsus, a theater with a seating capacity of 25,000, two agoras, a few bathhouses, and several temples.
