Discover Beautiful Rhode Island: Culinary Knowledge
Visitors have been flocking to Rhode Island for its scenic beauty, rich history, and breathtaking beaches for more than a century. But lately there's been a new type of visitor -- one who is hungry to sample the state's red hot culinary scene.
Our culinary culture is drawing attention from national publications and organizations. Travel and Leisure readers voted Providence the number one food city in the United States in their America's Favorite Cities poll. And many Rhode Island chefs have been invited to prepare dinner at the legendary James Beard House.
For those who like to burn some of those calories, culinary walking tours are growing in popularity. Tours are available in some of Rhode Island's tastiest neighborhoods, including Federal Hill and downtown Providence and Newport.
The art of creating wine and spirits also thrives here. Rhode Island boasts six wineries, two distilleries and two microbrews.
Why is Rhode Island a culinary capital? Maybe it's because we are the birthplace of the diner in 1872. Maybe it's because we are home to one of the country's best culinary schools. Or maybe it's the waves of immigrants that have lent their recipes and traditions to our culture.
One thing is for sure. Our flavorful story would not be told without the passion and dedication of the many people who comprise Rhode Island's hospitality and tourism industry.

This broadside ballad was printed c. 1840 in Providence, Rhode Island and we found it in the Harris Broadside collection at the John Hay Library, Brown University. See here:
The tune is an elaboration on the melody of a sea shanty called Liverpool Judies.

Durk's BBQ - Providence RI
Barbecue might be trendy these days. But there's nothing really trendy about barbecue. All it takes is a good cut of meat, wood, smoke, fire, a little seasoning, and a lot of patience. And for some of the juiciest, smokiest, tenderest Texas-style barbecue you can find outside the Lone Star state, you should come and in get it at Durk's.
#14: Rhode Island, Small Is Beautiful
Rhode Island is the smallest of the fifty states in the U.S.A.. Covering a mere 1,545 square miles, just big enough to contain New York City three times over, the state boasts considerable wonderful scenery. Last fall I spent a few days with family learning that Rhode Island has more than two well known cities and extensive coastline. From the shores of Narragansett Bay to the state forests in places like the Arcadia Wildlife Management Area Rhode Island can surprise you with its variety of flora and fauna.
I have had family living in Rhode Island for fifteen years but it was only recently that I started to learn just how varied the state is. After seeing the seals at Rone Point we'd turn our attention to the Escoheag Trail. Being greeted by this sign gave us pause, but we were prepared. The hills and rivers of the pine forests beckoned.
We'd leave the Escoheag Trail for the Ben Utter trail and Falls River. We'd work our way to the small waterfall, Stepstone Falls I believe, for a lovely lunch on a crisp autumn day. You could, if you wanted, visit the seashore, a rich pine forest, and river valley complete with remains of old foundations of anceint mills in one day.
Statesman Tavern - Bristol, RI (Phantom Gourmet)
Located in historic Bristol, Rhode Island, right by the beautiful harbor, Statesman Tavern is the brainchild of owner Sam Glynn,
who looked to the past, to help create something new. So he used traditional tavern fixtures, dark tones, and nautical touches to decorate the dining room, and hired Chef Chris Kleyla to command the busy kitchen where the emphasis is on what's seasonal, local, and of course, delicious.

More information about the video content bellow:
1. It’s not called what you think it is. The state’s full, official name is actually the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. It’s the longest official state name in the nation. According to one version of the state’s origin tale, the Dutch explorer Adrian Block, who canvassed the coastal northeast in the early 1600s, named it Roodt Eylandt,” or “red island,” after the red clay along the area’s shoreline. This is the version put forward by the state’s government website. However, elsewhere in official state archives, Rhode Island Historical Society librarian Howard M. Chapin recounts that Italian explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano referred to the Greek island of Rhodes while speaking of an island in the mouth of the Narragansett Bay. Either way, King Charles II granted his 1663 charter to the “Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations.”
2. It’s called the Plantation State. One might expect that moniker to refer to a southern state, but, since “Providence Plantations” is in the official state name, that nickname goes to Rhode Island. As the term plantation is typically associated with the dark specter of slavery in the U.S., several legislators voted to remove it from the official state name in 2010. Rhode Island was a major part of triangular transatlantic slave trade in the 18th century, shipping rum from its distilleries to Africa to trade for slaves and turning southern cotton into cloth; slavery was the “economic lifeblood” of the state for decades, as modern writers have noted. However, 78 percent of voters opposed the name change.
3. It was founded by radicals. Roger Williams, the state’s founder, was kicked out of Massachusetts in 1636 for what were then considered extreme views on religion, politics, and free speech—namely, his endorsements of freedom of religion and the separation of church and state. He was later joined by Anne Hutchinson, another religious dissident. Rhode Island would later become one of two states that refused to ratify the U.S. Constitution without a bill of rights that guaranteed certain freedoms.
4. It jumped at the chance to shake off British rule. Rhode Island was the first colony to give George III the send-off, renouncing its allegiance to the English ruler on May 4, 1776.
5. It was the first state to enact a Homeless Bill of Rights. In 2012, the state legislature formally cemented homeless people’s right to equal access to jobs, housing, and services, banning discrimination on the basis of housing status and guaranteeing homeless people access to public spaces like sidewalks and subways. It also specified that homeless people should have an expectation of privacy equal to that of people who live in homes.
6. Rhode Island never approved the 18th amendment A.K.A. prohibition.
7. It was the birthplace of the American textile industry. In 1790, Samuel Slater built the first water-powered cotton mill in Pawtucket. He’s now known as the father of the American factory system, and he paved the way for the Industrial Revolution. He also pioneered the Rhode Island System, a later-copied industrial organization system that involved recruiting entire families to live and work at the factory.
