Hiking the Big Butt Trail.
Yes, it's really called The Big Butt Trail. This trail takes you over peaks well in excess of a mile in elevation. From the ridge you can look across at the other side of the J-shaped range known as the Black Mountains, the highest range in the eastern USA.
Generally I find solitude here as it doesn't seem to be a particularly popular trail. Most people just hike part of it from the Blue Ridge Parkway up to Point Misery, a 5700-foot summit about a mile or so into the hike.

The Raleigh metropolitan statistical area had an estimated population of 1,214,516 in 2013.
Most of Raleigh is located within Wake County, with a very small portion extending into Durham County. The towns of Cary, Morrisville, Garner, Clayton, Wake Forest, Apex, Holly Springs, Fuquay-Varina, Knightdale, Wendell, Zebulon, and Rolesville are some of Raleigh's primary nearby suburbs and satellite towns.
