A drive through the Billy Graham Training Center at The Cove in Asheville, North Carolina
The Cove is a Christian conference center in Asheville, North Carolina. Despite a security stop and a big freeway, nearby, I found the center to be a peaceful, enjoyable experience. It was early fall and the leaves were just starting to change and fall - very pretty! At 1:34 I follow the loop in front of Chatlos Memorial Chapel to head back the way I came.

Lookout Mountain, Montreat Conference Center, NC
This hike is so much more than Lookout Mountain, but I couldn't fit everything in the title. I started with the popular Lookout Trail, part of the excellent trail system on Montreat Conference Center land. The steep trail leads to Lookout Rock with great views of the Seven Sisters, Great Craggy Mountains, and the Swannanoa Valley. A winter storm had blown through bringing temperatures in the high 20s with 25+ mph winds making it very cold and causing my camera to shake a lot.
From there I crossed over into the trail system of the Ridgecrest Conference Center. I first went to Copperhead Mountain with surprising open views of I-40 through Swannanoa Gap, with views of the Hickory Nut Mountains and South Mountains. Its neighbor Rattlesnake Mountain has big views in almost every direction, combining the views from Lookout and Copperhead. After that I returned to the Montreat trails and followed East Ridge Trail north to bag some peaks. Brushy Mountain had a good view northeast including Mackey Mountain, Table Rock Mountain, Green Knob, and Pinnacle. I turned around at Long Gap and followed the Old Trestle Road back. This trail is flat, easy, and has good winter views of Montreat. Overall it was a fantastic hike.
Hike was 7.4 miles in 5 hours and 10 minutes

Green Knob Lookout Tower, Blue Ridge Parkway, NC
The NC High Peaks Association rarely opens the Green Knob lookout tower cab, and I always seem to miss it. Except on April 14. Since the tower was only open from 8-12, I decided to drive up to the Green Knob Overlook and skip the longer hikes. Thanks to the association, the trail from the parkway is in great shape and easy to spot. Years ago when I hiked from the south the trail was completely obscured by branches. Unfortunately the combination of clouds and gnarly wind made it difficult to take good pictures with my phone. It was still nice seeing the top of the tower. It is in fantastic shape, and is kind of a shame that it remains closed year-round. I stopped by the north view from the trail, and also checked out the water access trail for the first time. There is a large, cement block with a faucet tap, but nothing came out. It is likely that years of rust, cement collapse, and clogging has made the spring box useless. I also included clips from the Mt. Mitchell Overlook and Black Mountains Overlook taken on the way to my next hike.
Hike was 1.4 miles with 787 feet elevation gain in 45 minutes.
