Summit Rock 11/13
Summit Rock, near Castle Rock State Park, opened briefly with free permits. An Adopt A Crag will be carried out in September 14'.
It's unfortunate that this crag is mostly closed due to falcon nesting. Especially when they're doomed from the start because animals can get to their nest.

What is a Food Bank?
Question: Hey Ken, what is a Food Bank?
Answer: A food bank is a non-profit hunger relief organization that receives food donations to distribute to the disadvantaged. Food banks are found in most communities and rely on donors and volunteers to carry out day-to-day operations. A food bank’s sole purpose is to help the hungry.

State Police Interrupt a Gold Mining Operation in Oregon!
Our mining claim neighbors called the Cops! People living on the other side of the river where our mining claim is and not liking our mining, called the cops. It appears our neighbors just did not want their liberal utopia disturbed so they call the cops to harass us. The police were very cool as I knew one of them from checking our permits on another river couple months earlier and an Oregon DEQ meeting he showed up at. The rude lady yells to at from other side of river you need a permit to do that...we had them of course. She also told cops we were disrespecful and rude to her...which was totally false. She made up her own narrative about what was happening to justify her being annoyed. Liberal tactic # 3, change the narrative or just plain lie!
This is the short version of the video, filmed on the Applegate River in Oregon while we were LEGALLY GOLD MINING!
In the video, it is a continuous video, shot on my GoPro camera that I was wearing on my head. The video shows me mining and moving around with no editing to show what actually goes on while mining. Then my buddy is helping me move rocks while I'm using a sub-surface dredge...then the cops show up , and I tell him is where the action starts.
UPDATE Jan 1st, 2015: In response to some of the comments saying we are uneducated, rednecks and other stuff...the guys in the video are as follows. One is a millionaire CPA, another a self employed business owner, two others are also self employed and owns a body shop and the other an internet marketer and freelance videographer, and lastly one is the son of the CPA guy and currently in college.
Oregon Mining Law:
Next time this happens, I will ask the State Police to cite the offending people who disrupt our mining operation based on this Oregon Mining Law:
ORS 517.133 Interfering with a mining operation. (1) As used in this section, lawful mining operation means any small scale mining operation that is in full compliance with state and federal laws.
(2) A person commits the crime of interfering with a mining operation if the person intentionally:
(a) Interferes with a lawful mining operation; or
(b) Stops, or causes to be stopped, a lawful mining operation.
(3) Interfering with a mining operation is a Class C misdemeanor. [1999 c.354 §6]

Mom Warns Other About Dangers of Swimming In Quarries After Son Died
More from Inside Edition:
Thousands of quarries exist across the country but some can be disastrous. Jonathan Baksh, 19, jumped into Martin's Creek quarry in Pennsylvania in 2015, but he never made it back to land after suffering a cramp in the water. His mom was stunned when she found out her son was the second young man to die in quarry that year. Now, as the one year anniversary of her son's passing arrives next month, she's on a crusade to tell the world about the dangers of swimming in quarries.
14 Hour Solo Day Hike | Katahdin and the Appalachian Trail
When you hear about the state of Maine, you might have a lot images come to mind: Rocky shores, overcast skies, horror stories about killer clowns and of course… Lobster.
With the crisp, salty smell of the Atlantic, I finished the last leg of my road trip. All the way from California to Maine, I made it from corner to corner of the United States.
For the last part of my journey, I had to venture even further north in Maine, to some of the lesser known areas of the state. Beyond the scattered lakes and into the dense forests, the appalachian trail twists and winds to this point: Baxter State Park.
I had lucked out by getting a quintessential lean to shelter in the park itself, right along the the trail. For most of us lay people, the park of Baxter is relatively unknown. However, for the mountain lovers out there, they may know the mountain that looms high in the center: Mt Katahdin. Among the Penobscot Natives, this mountain was referred to as “The Greatest Mountain” or in their language, Katahadin. Standing over 5200 feet tall, it may not be the highest point in the US, but compared to everything around, it surely towered over anything else in sight.

Pumpkin Rock Norco California World's Largest Jack Skellington Hill Climb Halloween Hiking Trail
Here's our hike up to Pumpkin Rock in Norco, California on August 9, 2015. Sorry the wind was so loud you couldn't hear the narration. That said, it was 2 hills with a flat bridge in the middle to get to the top. The first hill was the steepest. The 2nd was longer, but not as steep. Most people can make this hike no problem in less than 30 minutes. It is totally worth the trip. You can get to the trail from Pike's Peak Park very easily through a couple of residential streets.

What If A Mega-Tsunami Hit The United States?
Some geologists theorize that a volcano on La Palma might fall into the ocean and send a mega-tsunami across the Atlantic.
Welcome to La Palma, one of the 7 main Canary Islands, home to 81,000 people and a giant, scary volcano. Suppose it erupts, and the eruption is big enough that it triggers a massive landslide. Massive enough to send over a billion tons of rock sliding into the ocean, causing… A mega-tsunami. The initial wave is 914 meters (3000 feet) high. It surges upwards and outwards, setting off a chain reaction of deadly waves in all directions. In 6 hours, a series of 30 meter (100 ft) waves will batter the American East Coast.

Roll with the Sikh Riders of America
After a gunman killed six worshippers at a Sikh temple in 2012, Gurinder Singh Basra knew he needed to do something to fight deadly stereotypes about his faith. Sikhs, who believe in equality for all and service to others, increasingly had become the targets of hate crimes after September 11, 2001. So Gurinder started the Sikh Riders of America, a motorcycle club dedicated to fostering dialogue and visibility, while also fundraising for charities. Today, the club has about 200 members—including Gurinder’s young son Afftab, who is inspired to follow his father’s path of generosity and compassion.
A huge thanks to our guest editor this week, Portland Trail Blazer CJ McCollum. All week, he handpicked stories celebrating mentors inspiring the next generation.

Mt Whitney Trail in October! – a trip of apprehensions
This backpacking trip found us on a trail headed to the top of the tallest mountain in the contiguous United States, with an elevation of 14,508 feet… the Mt Whitney Trail (MWT)!
I received an invite from Cheese to join him and Alfonso on a trip to ‘Do Whitney’. While questioning if I was yet ready for such an adventure, I was not about to turn down another rare opportunity like this.
I knew that Bigfoot and I could climb the 6,500 feet, and I knew that we were both good for the mileage (22 miles round trip). The unknown variables for us was the Altitude and the Weather.
With 7 weeks to prepare, I was only able to do about 40 miles of training-hikes before hitting the campground at Whitney Portal on Oct20. Bigfoot and I had been taking our prescribed Diamox in advance of our arrival, and we were in hopes that spending a night at the Portal elevation (8,360ft) would help us acclimate to the Altitude. Ton$ of new cold-weather gear was loaded into our packs to defend against the foretasted 9 degree (F) windchill at the peak.
On the morning of Oct21, our boots hit the trail before 4am, and what lay ahead of us was the attempt of a lifetime! We set off with comfort that we were prepared for the cold, enthusiastically looking forward to seeing our summit and apprehensive anxiety wondering if Altitude Sickness (AMS) would end our trip early.
Via reservations, we base-camped at Whitney Portal Campground on the nights of 10/20 and 10/21. Via Permit, we used the Mt. Whitney Trail.
Actual Weather: It was much warmer than the forecast told us it would be. Nights got down to about 35 degrees.
The Diamox worked amazing with me up to about 13,000 feet. This, when I normally start having problems above 10,000ft.
Use of a backpackers stove as shown in this video does require that you hold a valid California Campfire Permit which can be obtained on-line.
