Ronald Reagan loses arm in Poland, pope looks on
The left arm of a bronze statue of former U.S. president Ronald Reagan, which stands next to a likeness of Pope John Paul II, was hacked off and stolen in Gdansk, Poland. The limb was found to be missing on Tuesday, and police are on the hunt for the thieving vandal, according to reports.
The statues, which depict the Polish-born pontiff and the president walking and talking, were inspired by an image taken by Associated Press photographer Scott Stewart during the pope's visit to the the United States in 1987. The statues were erected in Gdansk last year in memory of the support and solidarity the world leaders gave Poland in its struggle for democracy. The statues were a popular site where people left flowers, the local press noted.
The damage to the Reagan statue was initially estimated to exceed about $30,000, though it was reported that the sculptor said the repairs could be made for much less and in just a few weeks.
The statues are located in the Ronald Reagan park in the Przymorze district of Gdansk. They are larger-than-life, standing more than two metres high.
The former U.S. president is held in high esteem in Poland for his efforts in toppling the former Communist regime. In 2007 Polish President Lech Kaczynski presented Nancy Reagan, on behalf of her late husband, the Order of the White Eagle, the nation's highest honor. There is also a statue of Reagan in Warsaw, and a traffic circle in Wroclaw named after him.

The difference compared with earlier statues is that it was a big challenge to prepare a statue of the president of the United States, the world's leading power, and I hadn't done it before.
5. Close of hands
6. SOUNDBITE (Hungarian) Istvan Mate, sculptor:
The fate of a statue is always decided later on and it depends on its level of acceptance. If it is respected, then there will be no problems later in the statue's life.

17. SOUNDBITE (English) Marton Baranyi, admirer of Reagan:
I think Ronald Reagan is a role model for Hungarians and he could be a role model for politicians and nowadays he can be, because he was brave, he took his stand against communism, and he had a great effort to do this.
18. Tilt up of Reagan bust
19. SOUNDBITE (English) Marton Baranyi, admirer of Reagan:
I think my generation and our parents' generation owe much to the late president and his heritage because he made our world freer and he achieved that we could grow up in a free world, we could have our voice, we can start our businesses, we can say what we want and I think we attribute this partly to Ronald Reagan.

STORYLINE
Ronald Reagan never visited Hungary, but his efforts to end communism endeared him to many Hungarians - and now have earned him his second statue in Budapest.
Less than five years after erecting a bust of America's 40th president in a park, Hungary's capital is honouring Reagan with a full statue in Freedom Square, just a couple blocks from parliament and home to the US embassy.
The bronze 2-meter (7-foot) likeness, placed on a thin block of granite, shows Reagan in mid-stride, making it seem as if he's is taking a walk in the square.
Sculptor Istvan Mate had to work fast to meet his deadline, first preparing a mould from a clay model sculpted around a metal core, then casting seven separate bronze pieces weighing a total of 180 kilograms (400 pounds) and welding them together.
It was a big challenge to prepare a statue of the president of the United States, the world's leading power, Mate told The Associated Press as he put the finishing touches on the statue in his workshop in Csongrad, a small town 150 kilometres (93 miles) southeast of Budapest.
Mate has more than 140 works on display around Hungary - many of them done in collaboration with his wife, Gyorgyi Lantos - but the Reagan statue will be his first in Budapest.
The sculptor said the statue was meant to reflect Reagan's ease in connecting with people.

POLAND: KRAKOW: POPE JOHN PAUL II VISITS PARENTS' GRAVE
Natural Sound
As his tour of his homeland draws to a close, Pope John Paul the Second has visited the tomb of his parents in Krakow.
The pontiff also said Mass at the church where he gave his first service as a priest.
And later in the day he visited a new heart surgery clinic that has been named after him.
In what many believe will be his last visit to Poland, Pope John Paul the Second visited his parent's grave in Krakow on Monday.
There is no mention of the pope, but people visit the tomb to pay their respects to his family, even when the pontiff is not in town.
A choir sang as the 77-year-old kneeled before the tombstone and prayed.
The simple, granite gravestone is engraved with the names of his mother, father and brother.
Just 10 metres (25 feet) away are the graves of Red Army soldiers and a monument dedicated to their heroism in World War Two.
The pope lit a candle in front of the tomb.
Sprays of roses in the Polish and Vatican colours - red and white and yellow and white - decorated the modest tomb.
The pope began the day with a private Mass in a chapel at Wawel Royal Cathedral, where he held his first service as a priest in 1946.
Later in the day, he opened a new heart surgery clinic, that has been named after him.
The pontiff met with recent transplant patients and told them he understood what they were going through first hand.
The ageing pope has gone through a series of operations in recent years, including a hip replacement and removal of what the Vatican says was a benign colon tumour.
Many Poles fear this could be the last visit for John Paul.
But church officials suggested he may return next year, when he has been invited for the one-thousandth anniversary of the city of Gdansk on the Baltic coast.
The pope returns to Rome on Tuesday after spending 11 days in his homeland.

POLAND: WARSAW: POPE JOHN PAUL II VISIT (2)
Natural Sound
The Pope was given a hero's welcome by people lining the roads of Warsaw on Friday afternoon as he made his way to a monument for Jewish Victims.
He arrived at the Warsaw monument for Jewish victims of the Holocaust before spending a few minutes talking privately to Polish Jewish leaders.
Marek Edelman, the only surviving leader of the 1943 Warsaw Ghetto uprising, spent a few minutes with the Pontiff as did Jerzy Kichler, the head of the Union of Jewish Communities in Poland.
At the monument, the Pope said a prayer for the one (m) million Jewish victims killed at Auschwitz and nearby Birkenau camp in southern Poland as part of the Holocaust.
Earlier in the day, Poland's chief rabbi used a rare meeting with Pope John Paul II to ask for removal of a tall cross on property bordering the former Auschwitz Nazi death camp.
Rabbi Pinchas Menachem Joskowicz broached the sensitive subject during a series of brief, informal greetings the Polish-born pontiff had with religious leaders after speaking in Poland's parliament.
John Paul's brief response was inaudible, and the Vatican spokesman later called the issue a local one to be decided by the Polish church.
Other Jewish leaders in Poland criticised Joskowicz for raising the matter in what they called an inappropriate forum.

POLAND: WARSAW: POPE JOHN PAUL II VISIT
Natural Sound
Pope John Paul II urged Poles to put ethics and faith at the core of their young democracy, during an unprecedented speech in parliament on Friday.
The Pope's speech was the first address by a Roman Catholic pontiff to a national parliament.
He offered the most political comments so far of his 13-day pilgrimage to Poland, giving the Vatican's full endorsement to Poland's efforts to join the European Union.
Pope John Paul II met Poland's president Alexander Kwasniewski on Friday morning, before his speech to parliament.
The pontiff's meeting with Kwasniewski, a former communist, is being seen as a gesture that symbolizes the kind of reconciliation John Paul is seeking on what could be his final visit to his homeland.
On his way to parliament to become the first Roman Catholic pontiff to address a national parliament, the Pope was greeted by hundreds of flag-waving Poles.
They lined the route to catch glimpse of him, as they have done throughout his visit.
Before arriving at parliament, the Pope stopped at a monument to soldiers killed during World War Two to give a blessing.
The 79-year-old Pope has greatly influenced recent Polish history, inspiring the birth of the Solidarity movement that eventually toppled communist rule a decade ago.
At parliament, he spoke to an audience of legislators, judges, religious leaders, diplomats and other dignitaries, including former communists who tried to crush the Solidarity movement.
He called on Poles to put ethics and faith at the core of their young democracy,
John Paul said politics and economic development must be based on ethical principles and spirituality, a theme with particular resonance in a country where many people
equate national identity with Catholicism.
At the end, he echoed his prayer from his first pilgrimage home 20 years earlier, when he asked the Holy Spirit to renew the face of Poland.
Those words are credited with helping spark the birth of Solidarity a year later, leading to the end of communism in 1989.
Solidarity founder Lech Walesa, the first popularly elected president after communism, was among the audience that gave the Pope standing ovations.
Those applauding also included former communist leader Gen. Wojciech Jaruzelski, who imposed martial law in 1981 to try to crush the Solidarity democracy movement the Pope helped inspire.
John Paul smiled warmly during the lengthy applause at the end.
He then held out his arms in a gesture of wonder and said, Oh, what's happened to us!
The audience laughed and began clapping rhythmically.
The Pope is expected to pay tribute to Jewish victims of the Holocaust at Umschlagpatz monument in Warsaw on Friday afternoon.
