Soon you will be able to experience Old Dubbo Gaol without even leaving your couch
Thanks to our Certificate IV in Digital Interactive Games students, you will soon be able to experience Old Dubbo Gaol without even leaving your couch.
Students enrolled in the TAFE Western, Dubbo College Certificate IV in Digital Interactive Games are in the midst of designing a virtual program which will cover the entire grounds of the Old Dubbo Gaol.
TAFE Western IT teacher Ben Kirkness said the aim of the program is for the students to create an architectural visual of the gaol as if viewers had travelled back to 1887.
Mr Kirkness said there are over 20 students enrolled in the year long course, some coming as far as Orange to attend classes.
It's been great to finally be able offer students an experience in advancing technology, especially this side of the Blue Mountains, Mr Kirkness said.
Normally this is a Sydney level course, but it's truly great to be able to do something like this in a regional area.

'It's alright, I've got my wife': Touching moment Meghan holds an umbrella to shield Harry from torrential rain as the pregnant royal admits she's a 'bit tired' on day two of their Australian tour.
Meghan Markle shielded Prince Harry from torrential rain as he delivered an inspiring speech dedicated to Australia's struggling farmers - urging them to ask for help if they are suffering in tough times.

Pregnant Meghan Markle cries tears of joy in Tonga
PREGNANT Meghan Markle cried tears of laughter after schoolkids in Tonga sang a comedy song about mosquitoes today.
The mum-to-be was pictured in hysterics as The Tupou College Boys' choir used flying actions, buzzing noises and finger clicks to serenade her and husband Harry.
The couple - who were there to dedicate two of the school's rainforest tracts to the Queen's Commonwealth Canopy - were entertained by the song to ward of mosquitoes.
Harry later visited Tuloa forest alone because of the Zika virus risk to pregnant Meghan.
Tonga is rated as a moderate risk for the virus, which can be contracted through mosquito bites.
He later joined the school choir in singing 'Swing low sweet chariot', encouraging the crowds to sing louder.
Meghan had earlier swapped designer stripes for a dazzling blue dress as she and Prince Harry spent their final day in Tonga.
She opted for the green and white dress by Australian-born fashion designer Martin Grant before changing into the blue Veronica Beard dress for the latest leg of the couple's royal tour.
Harry and Meghan started their Friday meeting the Tongan prime minister and his cabinet before heading to the Fa'onelua Convention Centre to look at traditional handicrafts, mats and tapa cloths.
At the Tupou College, the Sussexes dedicated two forest reserves to the Queen's Commonwealth Canopy before leaving from Fua'amotu airport for Sydney.
The Duke and Duchess will then attend the Australian Geographic Society Awards at the Shangri-La Hotel.
Prince Harry said the entertainment at an official welcome reception was very good as he met the Tongan prime minister.
The couple were met by more than 50 civil servants wearing red and black shirts and traditional outfits as they entered the St George Government Buildings for a meeting with PM 'Akilisi Pohiva and his cabinet.
One child held a sign saying free hugs, which Meghan spotted and smiled at.
The couple donned floral garlands and traditional Tongan dress as they immersed themselves in the culture of the South Pacific nation.

Trauma: Triage, Treatment and Transport
Traumatic injury is a major contributor to premature mortality in Australia, accounting for 50% of deaths in children and 75% of deaths in adolescents and
young adults. The single most common cause of trauma is road traffic accidents, accounting for 40% of all deaths in the 15 to 25 year age group.
Mortality rates associated with trauma increase with remoteness, being 3.6 times higher in very remote areas. The trauma mortality of Indigenous people is nearly 4 times greater than that for non-Indigenous people.
For every death from injury, there are 31 hospital admissions and 144 emergency department attendances. In addition, traumatic injury can have catastrophic physical, psychological and economic consequences for survivors and families. The time taken to reach definitive care is the most significant predictor of trauma survival. Geographic isolation is obviously an important factor in higher levels of mortality and morbidity; but improvements in the delivery of appropriate intervention have the potential to reduce those rates.
This program focuses on the skills required for a more timely and effective response to trauma in rural and remote Australia: skilful triage and assessment; appropriate consultation with medical services; emergency management on the ground; arrangements for timely retrieval; and preparation of patients for transfer.

Aged Care Assessment Program
Australia has an ageing population. People are living longer and the birth rate has dropped. The proportion of the population aged 65 years and over is projected to rise from around 12% in 2010 to 25% by the year 2051.There is a higher proportion of older people living in rural areas. Older people often require support and assistance with the tasks of daily living, or they may need to make the difficult decision to enter an aged care facility. The ageing population has already had a significant impact on waiting lists for access to aged care services, some which require an assessment by an Aged Care Assessment Team.
The role of Aged Care Assessment Teams (ACATs, or ACAS in Victoria) is to assess the care needs of frail older people and to assist them to gain access to the most appropriate types of care, including approval for Australian Government-subsidised aged care services. In doing this, ACATs conduct multidisciplinary comprehensive assessments, taking account of the restorative, physical, medical, psychological, cultural and social dimensions of frail older people. Assessments are usually conducted in a community or hospital setting. Independent to service providers, ACATs make their decisions in consultation with the client and their carers, and are encouraged to involve the client's General Practitioner.
As part of the 2006 Council of Australian Governments (COAG) health reform package, COAG agreed to a measure to strengthen the Aged Care Assessment Program and work towards providing more timely, consistent and quality assessments for frail older people. Following a National Review of ACATs undertaken in 2007, significant work has been undertaken by both the Commonwealth and the state and territory governments to address the Review recommendations.
This educational program explores aged care assessments in rural and remote communities, and the role of rural primary health care professionals in the comprehensive assessment of the needs of the ageing and their families. This program also highlights some of the challenges of ACATs in rural and remote Australia. The program examines strategies that have been developed to manage these challenges.
