Beautiful Gardens of Saiho-ji
The Moss Temple in the west of Kyoto
Nanzenin temple and gardens, Kyoto, Japan travel video
Nanzen-Ji in Kyoto, Japan is a vast complex with numerous subtemples, gardens and shrines sprawling up the hillside, including another pebble garden, hiking trails, waterfalls and a mountain glen.
Nanzen-ji was bestowed the title of “First Temple of the Land” and is considered by many to be the most famous and important Zen Temple in the world. It's designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Nanzenin is a smaller sub-temple behind the main Nanzen-ji, and it's one of the oldest and yet one of the least well-known sub temples, perhaps because it's slightly hidden away. It started out as a retirement villa for the Emperor Kameyama.
Perhaps the main feature of Nanzenin is the small pond and quiet moss garden surrounded by Momiji trees and azaleas. And the pond has several tiny islets including one that shaped like the character for heart.
The pond garden was built in the strolling style representing the late Kamakura period and retains an image of beautiful scenery surrounded by deep forest with an exceptional atmosphere of peace and tranquility. It was designated a national historic and scenic site in 1923.
It's a very small garden that you could walk around in five minutes and exit but it's so pretty that it's certainly worth stopping and standing and enjoying each of the views from its own particular angle, which of course is the way these gardens are designed. They are strolling gardens, so the idea is to walk along with your eyes open and stop here and there, look this way, look that way, and enjoy all the different views as they unfold.

Chion-in temple and gardens, Kyoto, Japan travel video
Chion-in is the main temple of the Jodo sect of Japanese Buddhism which has millions of followers throughout the country and 7000 other temples but Chion-in is the main temple where this branch of Buddhism was created by Honen way back in the 12th century.
The main entrance Sanmon Gate is the largest wooden gate in Japan, 24 meters tall or 79 feet, and dates back to the early 1600s.
The vast temple grounds include 106 buildings and several beautiful gardens we will take you walking through.
We were fortunate to be able to enter the Miedo, the main building of the temple complex which is now closed for renovation until early 2019. Inside, a regular service was taking place with the Shōmyō, which is the melodic chanting of a Sutra. We'll show you more of that at the end of the video. [chanting]
There is no charge for walking around in the temple grounds but if you want to enter the gardens you do pay a small fee -- you can pay separately for one or for both gardens.
The two gardens that you find at Chion-in are smaller than what you'll find that many of the other temples of Kyoto but the gardens are quite lovely and we're going to walk you through them.
The Hojo garden is designated by Kyoto city as a famous scenic spot. It's a garden designed around the pond. We're enjoying it with the remains of the autumn foliage of early December -- you can also come in the spring and see the cherry blossoms or you'll experience the fresh greenery in the summertime.

Saihoji, more commonly known as Kokedera, literally moss temple, is on the list of Unesco World Heritage Sites. To enter this temple requires a reservation to be made well in advance by mail.
Kokedera refers to the temple garden's estimated 120 different varieties of moss. Visitors to the temple can walk through this dazzling garden, which has strongly influenced designs of subsequent Japanese garden.
Kokedera was originally the site of Prince Shotoku's residence before becoming a temple in the Nara Period. In 1339, the temple was renovated and changed into a Zen temple under the priest Muso Soseki. Muso is also reputed to have created Kokedera's gardens.

Saiho-ji Zen Garden (Moss Temple) Kyoto Japan
December 2009. An ancient temple said to have been established by the monk Gyoki during the Nara Period, Saiho-ji Temple was restored and converted into a Zen temple by the monk Muso Soseki in 1339.
The precincts are covered by more than 120 types of moss, resembling a beautiful green carpet - thus its other name, Kokedera Temple, which literally means Moss Temple.
The garden, designated as a special place of scenic beauty, consists of a lower landscape garden surrounding a pond shaped like the Chinese character kokoro (heart), and an upper dry landscape-style rock garden built by Muso Soseki. This garden has exerted a great deal of influence on later Japanese gardens.

Jizo-in Temple is a Buddhist temple, which is also known as Take-no-tera (temple of bamboo), not because it is constructed of bamboo, but because it is in a bamboo forest. This bamboo forest creates a mystical atmosphere for your walk along the narrow path towards the temple gate. The temple grounds feature a zen style moss garden. Jizo-in Temple is a Buddhist temple, which is part of the Rinzai sect of Buddhism. The current temple buildings mostly date back to Edo period, as the original buildings were destroyed in the fires of the Onin war (1467-77). The temple was established by Hosokawa Yoriyuki in 1367. Jizo-in Temple is in the Arashiyama mountains, close to the World Heritage Listed Saihoji Temple.

Gioji Temple, Kyoto - 祇王寺●京都 - Japan As It Truly Is
Gioji Temple is a small and often overlooked temple in Arashiyama, Kyoto. From late spring its moss garden is gorgeous.
It's sometimes called the poor man's Kokedera, referring to another temple in Arashiyama that's the most expensive in Kyoto and requires advanced reservations to see. Its moss garden is the most famous, but for those who can't afford it or set up the appointment, Gioji Temple makes a quick and inexpensive substitute. To see the autumn colors (usually the 2nd half of November) its beautiful maple trees also an excellent place to visit.
Gioji also has a treasure house with items going back over 8 centuries.
Admission is 300 yen, and is just a bit south of the Adashino Nenbutsuji Temple which is also well worth visiting.
Their website is:
Open 9 AM - 5 PM (last entry 4:30 PM).
If you also plan to see Daikakuji Temple, there is a combo ticket for 600 yen.
