SV Colmena - Sailing the Pacific Coast -Total Eclipse, Newport Oregon
Sailing down the Pacific coast we anchored in Yaquina Bay to watch the total eclipse. We put together this goofy video for fun. Not much sailing involved just hanging on the boat with the cat watching the sun disappear. We hope you enjoy it.
Newport to Bermuda: Gulf Steam Rig Failure Episode! - we AReGONe
Our passage from Newport to Bermuda didn't go quite as smoothly as we had hoped. We sustained some damage to our rig in the gulf stream and had a few hairy moments. Ultimately, the crew arrived safely in Bermuda with no injuries and we've learned some valuable lessons. Repairs are in progress in Bermuda and we hope to be back on our way soon.
As always, we thank you for watching, liking and sharing our videos and hope you'll consider subscribing to our channel.

Newport 2013
Mom and Dad dropped down to Oregon in the middle of September to visit some friends in Bend during the Labor Day week. Upon their return we decided to spend a couple of nights over on the coast just to get away and see something different.
We stayed at the Shilo Inn, an aging but quaint seaside hotel with nothing but ocean views from every room. A majority of our weekend was spent walking from location to location including Nye Beach and downtown Newport. Our first night's dinner was at Nana's Irish Pub.
The next day we visited The Kite Company, a local kite shop on highway 101, for a repair to one of our kites. Later that afternoon we attempted to sail it in the almost too calm air along the beach near our hotel. It soared for a while but we really had very little time flying it since there was not suitable gusts to utilize.
For lunch we supped at the Rogue River Brewery (visited in a previous video and sampled their wide variety of ales and lagers along with an excellent lunch.
We walked along the fisherman's pier and observed the locals crabbing, and that's when I realized that when I'm with my parents we tend to gyrate towards people who crab (
Thanks again, Mom and Dad, for spending time with us and we had a wonderful weekend.

Asking Simon
- Who are you?
I'm a Canadian photographer from Ottawa who got rid of everything to travel the world. I make vlogs sharing my ups and downs, and my adventures in vans, on motorbikes, and on sailboats.
- Who is Champ?
Champ is my handsome 14-year-old Labrador, who travelled almost everywhere with me for his whole life. He loves chin scratches, fetching sticks, and scarfing down cheeseburgers and pizza.
- What camera equipment do you use?
I use a Panasonic FZ2500, a DJI Mavic Pro, a Rode video micro with Deadcat, a Zihyun Crane 3 Axis Gimbal, as well as DIY tripods and lights.
- What are your vehicles?
I drove a 1992 Dodge Ram B350 camper van all over North America for about two years.
Travelling by motorcycle made for some unique trips. I explored the Canadian Maritimes (and deserts and backroads all over the continent) on a 2002 Kawasaki KL250 Super Sherpa dual sport bike, and also rode my 1999 Yamaha V-Star XVS1100 cruiser with a Champion Escort sidecar across my home country twice.
From land to water travels: I currently live and work on a 1979 Wharram Oro 47 catamaran.
- What are your plans with the boat?
I will fix it up, run it on nothing but green electric power, and sail off into the sunset. Stay tuned for the growing build and the adventures to come!
- How do you find all these cool places we see in the videos?
To gain access to my complete research and the world traveller’s map I curate during my explorations off the beaten path, you need to hit me up on Patreon. Here are a few websites I frequent:
- How do you afford your lifestyle?
I live and travel economical by using free camping and mooring, cooking my own meals, thoroughly researching products and how-to’s online, practicing a DIY approach, and being as efficient as possible with my resources. I've struggled financially for most of my life, and although I'm blessed with helpful friends and family as well as being able-bodied, white and male, I don't subscribe to the belief that you need someone footing your bills in order to pursue your passion. So, I learned that you DO need to sacrifice comfort, consistency, safety, and a traditional career but that it IS possible, worth it, and the only lifestyle that makes me happy.
I make my income almost entirely by creating content for YouTube, but it's a tight budget. Ad revenue, business sponsors, affiliate links, Patreon, Paypal donations, and merchandise sales bring in about as much as a part-time job, and I'm able to make that work. When it isn't enough, I go back to regular work such as photography, videography or construction, but that takes the focus away from my own projects.
- How does your dog fit into this lifestyle?
It's really not as difficult as people seem to think. I spend most of the day with Champ anyways, since we enjoy similar things, like eating food and being outdoors. I let the constraint of bringing my dog with me help me make decisions about where I go and what I do, so I avoid places that ban dogs, and therefore spend more time in nature instead of in cities.
- How do you make it work as a digital nomad?
My electrical power set-up allows charging my camera and laptop to film and edit almost daily. For Internet access quick and reliable enough to upload my episodes a few at a time, I use coffee shops and libraries. I also use a data package on my phone (10GB), a WiFi antenna, and a WiFi booster.
Hurricane Florence ON a Sailboat | Anchoring and Mooring for a Storm
Gary E. Brown has rode out several hurricanes on his sailboat on a mooring in St. Martin. He tells you how he did it, survived, and escaped major damage to his sailing boats. Gary E. Brown is the editor of All at Sea magazine and has been sailing the Caribbean for decades.
This is a controversial practice, but it is a great story. Captain Linus Wilson who speaks to Gary, argues that you should never stay on your boat in a hurricane. He says that any benefits of riding out the storm is outweighed by the human and economics costs of staying on the sailboat and risking injury or worse to the crew.
Sailing La Vagabonde recently spoke of their hurricane plan to stay in the hurricane belt for the height of hurricane season in Why we Chose to Sail during Hurricane Season! (Hurricane Gordon & Florence)
You will see many wrecked catamarans and sailboats from hurricanes Maria and Irma. We show the forecast of the major hurricane Florence from Windy.com using several different weather models. Florence is headed for South & North Carolina.

before Hurricane Florence Sailing Mischief was SUNK by Irma & Stranded by Maria
The creators of Sailing Mischief lost their sailboat in a marina when it was hit by the eye of a major hurricane. Then they scrambled to escape an increasingly desperate situation on the island of St. Martin.
Linus Wilson interviews Ariana Czaia of the Sailing Mischief who with her boyfriend Christian Hightower lost their boat in the eye of hurricane Irma in September 2017. It was sunk by Irma in the marina. They then evacuated to Puerto Rico and found themselves in the eye of Hurricane Maria. Then Christian was stranded by hurricane Maria. Parts of this interview were aired on episode 51 of the Slow Boat Sailing Podcast and its patron-only bonus episode.
We also have public domain footage from NOAA of the track of 2018 major, category 4 hurricane Florence as it nears the Carolinas, North and South Carolina.

A little bit about us...
We met in the summer 2015, we were introduced to each other by the virtual world. Eighteen months later we were getting married on a beautiful beach on Barbados, bare foot, very simple ceremony just like a dream!
Two days after the wedding laying on the beach, talking about sailing, Carla suggested... why don't we sail around the world? Guess what Simon said? Let's do it He took it with no second thoughts! And here we are, fifteen months after that day in Barbados, we started our adventure in Croatia.
We made it happen working through all the challenges on the way.
Now we are enjoying this wonderful life, and what a wonderful life it is!
As we travel we will cross less fortunate countries, we would love to help to build a school or a health care centre, anything that these people may need, and in our beautiful world this is taken for granted. But for these people it's a dream, or may not even be a dream.
We will look around and when the opportunity to help comes we will put our hands and hearts in to it.
Much love
Carla and Simon
Sailing the Roaring 40s in 30 foot Waves! Sailing SV Delos Ep. 107
In this episode we sail through the roaring 40s and it was crazy! Definitely the most intense part of our 3000NM passage from South Africa to La Reunion. We had wind speeds of over 50kn, 23–32ft (7–10m) waves and in the middle of everything our autopilot breaks and it’s hand steering from now on! A bit of a tester as our new crew have not hand steered before. Our whole world was getting slammed and tossed around in the waves and I think Brady described it pretty well “It feels like if your driving a car, with your eyes closed on a bumpy dirt road for days. Knowing your going to hit a tree but not knowing when you’re going to hit that tree. So all of a sudden you’re just driving and BOOM!“
Get ready for some hectic weather :D hope you Like!
Much Love, Karin, Brian and Mr Brady!

If you do choose to visit this spot, please be respectful of the property. With urban exploring, you should leave only footprints and take only photos.
Between 1876 and 1883, lawyer and businessman Theodore M. Davis built a mansion known as The Reefs (later The Bells) on the property, where he lived until his death in 1915. The estate soon after became the property of auto magnate Milton J. Budlong.
The heavily vandalized manor house was partially destroyed by fire in 1960, then torn down in 1963. The remains are located at Brenton Point State Park in Newport, Rhode Island.

Up until now, we’ve been securely tied to a dock whenever a storm has hit. This is our first time at anchor. ????

This was a one time sail of 100km to Belgium from the Netherlands the Veersemeer.
To get him raised out of the water into a seat to have new antifouling and paint here and there and some restorations and fixes.
Nothing extremely difficult but still it had to be done on shore as the propeller shaft had to be replaced and the rudder had to be fixed with a brand new bearing.
Also I would check the through holes and close up a few.
But nothing went as planned after a while.
We motored out of Veerse Meer into the Eastern Schelde, no problem what so ever, some wind, some waves, but nothing major.
We raised the sail as I didn't fitted the genua and we sailed nicely 5 knots.
After the Eastern we went into the Upper Schelde or the Western Schelde where was lots of wind and high waves. As this is actual open water directly in connection with the Nord sea and act as a funnel, here and there.
We had bad luck with the current, and first with a motor boat in a lock that had engine problems.
Now we were here in low tide and struck ground.
I called up the rescue team KNRM and the y came asap, they made us feel comfortable again and all went good.
In this episode you can see that my brother and I, fixing up the boat as good and fast as possible.
Me and my brother hung a new second hand outboard engine on the back of the boat, drilled holes and fixed it in place.
Also we made the engine technical feasible again .... impeller and impeller housing + gearbox oil and such !
And tested this all at a friends (Yves) place...
This part has some more information on the techical errors I've made and the fixes !
Hope you'll like the video ! Give a thumbs up, share and a subscribe pls ;)

Some of the spoken text, if you don't understand the bad English lol
Wait .... what .... why
Is this important, to find your outboard engine near your own boat....
Well, in previous episode I mentioned we had a mild storm, it was fierce enough to break 3 scepters from the boat, one even with polyester and all.
In the back it forced a hole in the stern, while we think the orange taxi boats pushed or hit the swimming ladder it forced a hole in the stern, just above the water lins, so the boat wasn't sinking.
The bigger problem was, that it also pushed of my brand new second hand, perfect little outboard engine...
Wich I really want as secondairy engine, just for when he inboard 45 year old Ferryman gives up, wich is unlikely because they are build as a tank, but still...
So my outboard was on the bottom of the water now.
We tried to fish it back up with my line retriever stick and peddle, but we didn't feel nothing on the bottom with low tie...
Still now we arrived and saw the engine on laying there on the dock lol
This problem only had 1 solution.
Go find a new outboard engine or just do the last few miles only with the inboard...
On to find a secondairy outboard engine I went !
I found a few, all very expensive and not really trustworthy.
My eye catched this Evinrude 9.9HP 2 stroke engine for 500€
I was sure I could knock the price way down...
So I called and had an appointment, he was prepared to let me see the engine running !
The great thing and bad thing was that the engine didn't started !
Damn and yay at the same time. now it's a gamble, allthough these little engines are almost undestructable it still was a gamble..
We knocked the price halfway down, but without the remote controllers. (thorttle and shifter)
So of we went to Yves, who you remember from first part of this crazy journey ....
He lives right next to a fishing pound, where we can lower the engine in to test him...
Nor-thing at start, but Yves explained that airtight fuel lines are number 1 key of these outboard engines...
so we used his and BAM full throttle he went, great....but a problem was, he wasn't cooling.
That ment 1 thing, impeller replacement....

Rare color footage from Aloha at Newport Beach Ca.
Here is some very rare 16mm footage shot in beautiful Technicolor in 1949 at Aloha Wanderwell Baker and Walter Bakers home on Lido Island, Newport Beach, California. Walter Baker was one of the first to build on Lido. You will get to see my great grandmother, Aloha's mother, Margret V Hall. Walter and Aloha who lived on Lido Island from 1945-1996 The film shows Aloha and her mother are sailing in one of the first Newport’s Ensenada races. The Annual Newport to Ensenada Yacht Race is a 125-nautical-mile International Yacht Race. First run in 1948, sailors gather each spring in Newport Beach, California, to take part in one of the West Coast's premier regattas. The Newport to Ensenada yacht Race (N2E) is a race to the city of Ensenada, Baja California. Later Aloha is talking with her friend at the yacht club, Mr. Humphrey Bogart. You can see what I refer to as this glow or presence that Aloha had when she would enter a room. What a Beautiful, Empowering, Incredible, Woman!
