Kayoi Komachi / Komachi Visited - HIGHLIGHTS
Kayoi Komachi / Komachi Visited (a noh chamber opera) WORLD PREMIERE - October 26-28, 2017 The Cultch Historic Theatre - Vancouver BC.
A re-visioning of the story of the great poet Ono-no-Komachi and her lover Fukakusa-no-Shōsho, who haunted her even into death. Using parts of the text from the noh plays Kayoi Komachi and Sotoba Komachi combined with Komachi's poetry, this opera tells of a woman haunted by her past and coming into herself through her words. Kayoi Komachi/Komachi Visited integrates the music and aesthetics from both opera and noh, involving master artists from each tradition.
