Californian wine growers are concerned about effects of global warming

5. SOUNDBITE: (English) David Graves, General Manager, Saintsbury Winery:
Grape vines are stressed by heat just like human beings are stressed by heat. If you have some forewarning with vineyards that are irrigated, you can give them a little irrigation water. They use that water during that heat spell to keep from frying. But the clusters of grapes hanging out in the bright light they get too warm and sometime they get what we call sunburn just like a human gets sunburned when they're out in the sun too long.

14. SOUNDBITE: (English) David Graves, General Manager, Saintsbury Winery:
The leaves that are really stressed, they start to dry out and they start to really look like they're going to fall off and die because that's what they're about to do.
15. Various of vineyard
16. Driving shot through vineyard
17. SOUNDBITE: (English) Andy Beckstoffer, Chairman, Beckstoffer Vineyards
That has much more of an effect on the Napa Valley and our growing season than average global temperatures. All of that being said, if the global temperature rises so much that Napa Valley floods, we're all out of business.

Temperature effects all the grape growing regions and over a long period of time you can change the quality of fruit grown in the different districts. It probably won't mean you can't grow grapes but if you don't do anything with technology to address it, it could change the variety of grapes, the quality of grapes and everything that you've done.

24. SOUNDBITE: (English) David Graves, General Manager, Saintsbury Winery
The key thing we're worried about is how warm is warm and how warm is warm going to get.

SUGGESTED LEAD IN :
Global warming could spell disaster for much of the multi billion-dollar United States wine industry.
Areas suitable for growing premium wine grapes could be reduced by fifty percent - and possibly as much as eighty one percent - by the end of this century, according to a study published earlier this week by the 'National Academy of Sciences'.
The main problem is an increase in the frequency of extremely hot days.... grapes used in premium wines need a consistent climate.
STORYLINE:
Visitors to California's famous wine region 'Napa Valley' are greeted by a statue called the grape crusher.
This summer they've also been greeted by three weeks of higher than normal temperatures.
David Graves general manager at the Saintsbury winery produces a variety of red and white wine.
But a recent heat wave has taken its toll on his vines.
Graves, says the grape vines are stressed by heat just like humans get stressed.
Many researchers and wine producers believe the heat wave illustrates the possible long-term effects of global warming.
A recent study by the national academy of sciences says climate change could wipe out California's three billion dollar wine industry by the end of the century.

Napa Wineries Face Global Warming
California’s Napa Valley has a microclimate that helps it produce world-famous wines, but what happens as the climate warms up? Vintners are using advanced technology to conserve water, while scientists are experimenting with varieties that could replace the cool-climate Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays of today.
