Balboa Park, is a 1,200-acre park in San Diego, California. It is comprised of gardens, walking paths, contains 17 museums, two theaters, the world-famous San Diego Zoo and the largest outside organ amphitheater in the world. Sue and I spent (3) 6 hour days exploring things here, many times splitting up, trying to take in all this place had to offer.
This was a Sue & Mark Ying and Yang” day of exploring! We decided I would concentrated on the Air & Space, Fleet Science, Automotive and Railroad Museums. Sue would tour and report on the Botanical and Japanese Gardens, as well as the Humanity Museum, which had a special exhibit on Cannibalism!
Balboa Park is run and maintained by the City of San Diego Parks and Recreation Department. We purchased one week passes that allowed museum entry to all of the free AND paid attractions. The senior discounted rate was $59/person. It is virtually impossible to see everything that this park has to offer in less than 5 or six days. All the things to do and see are close enough to each other so you can walk once your car is parked. Prepare to walk 10,000 steps a day.
Balboa Park's rise in prominence was secured when it hosted the 1915–16 Panama–California Exposition. This was soon followed by the 1935–36 California Pacific International Exposition. This park still has the special look and feel from that grand era when cities built exposition facilities to set themselves apart from other cities. You will love visiting this gem.

The museum was first opened to the public on February 15, 1963 in the Food and Beverage Building, which had been built in 1915 for the Panama–California Exposition.[10] In 1965 the museum was moved to the larger Electrical Building.
On February 22, 1978 the Electrical Building and the Museum were destroyed in an arson fire.[11][12] Several one-of-a-kind aircraft were destroyed, including the Beecraft Wee Bee, the world's lightest aircraft, and her sister craft the Queen Bee. A reproduction of the Spirit of St. Louis, built in 1967 by some of the same people who built the original, was also destroyed, along with more than 50 other aircraft, an extensive collection of artifacts and archives, and the International Aerospace Hall of Fame.[12][13] Owen Clarke, the museum's executive director, said of the $4 million in losses, This is unbelievably tragic. When you've spent that length of time acquiring history, building something up to where it had international prestige, then see it all disappear in a couple of hours, what else can it be?[14]

A Walk Through the San Diego Air and Space Museum
This is the fourth of my walk through videos of aviation museums that I visited during my three day planned layover in the Los Angeles area between Parts 1 & 2 of my Train Odyssey 2. In addition to these museums, I also have videos for my walk throughs of the Petersen Automotive Museum, the Queen Mary, and the San Diego Automotive Museum (part of the Petersen video). Later in the same trip, I visited the Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum and there will be a video for that as well.

San Diego Maritime Museum
(Originally made for Media Communications Course, CAT125, at UC San Diego by me. As such this video is a personal project, and was not sponsored or authorized in any way by the San Diego Maritime Museum) The San Diego Maritime Museum is one of the finest collections of historic vessels in the world. Located in sunny San Diego California right on San Diego Bay. Walk the decks of the worlds oldest active sailing ship, the 151 year old Star of India. Take a selfie with an actual movie star, the H.M.S. Surprise, featured in both Master and Commander: Far Side of the World with Russell Crowe and Pirates of the Caribbean IV: Far Side of the World with Johnny Depp. Tour a Soviet Era Fox-Trot Russian submarine as well as the worlds deepest diving submarine, the U.S.S. Dolphin. Enjoy the beautiful stain glass windows aboard the Berkeley, a 116 year old ferry boat. Take a tour of the bay on either the Pilot boat, the worlds oldest active pilot boat at 100 years old. Or the Vietnam era swift boat. Or spend 4 hours sailing outside of the bay on the official tallship of the state of California, the Californian, a 30 year old topsail schooner. Whatever you choose to do at the museum, its sure to be a memorable experience.

Starting Point: Market Street
San Diego is a major city in California, United States. It is in San Diego County, on the coast of the Pacific Ocean in Southern California, approximately 120 miles (190 km) south of Los Angeles and immediately adjacent to the border with Mexico.
With an estimated population of 1,394,928 as of July 1, 2015, San Diego is the eighth-largest city in the United States and second-largest in California. It is part of the San Diego–Tijuana conurbation, the second-largest transborder agglomeration between the US and a bordering country after Detroit–Windsor, with a population of 4,922,723 people. San Diego has been called the birthplace of California. It is known for its mild year-round climate, natural deep-water harbor, extensive beaches, long association with the United States Navy, and recent emergence as a healthcare and biotechnology development center.
The city is the seat of San Diego County and is the economic center of the region as well as the San Diego–Tijuana metropolitan area. San Diego's main economic engines are military and defense-related activities, tourism, international trade, and manufacturing. The presence of the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), with the affiliated UCSD Medical Center, has helped make the area a center of research in biotechnology.
Economy
The largest sectors of San Diego's economy are defense/military, tourism, international trade, and research/manufacturing, respectively. In 2014, San Diego was designated by a Forbes columnist as the best city in the country to launch a small business or startup company.

Tourism
Tourism is a major industry owing to the city's climate, beaches, and tourist attractions such as Balboa Park, Belmont amusement park, San Diego Zoo, San Diego Zoo Safari Park, and SeaWorld San Diego. San Diego's Spanish and Mexican heritage is reflected in many historic sites across the city, such as Mission San Diego de Alcala and Old Town San Diego State Historic Park. Also, the local craft brewing industry attracts an increasing number of visitors for beer tours and the annual San Diego Beer Week in November; San Diego has been called America's Craft Beer Capital.
