San Diego is a major city in California, United States. It is in San Diego County, on the coast of the Pacific Ocean in Southern California, approximately 120 miles (190 km) south of Los Angeles and immediately adjacent to the border with Mexico.
With an estimated population of 1,394,928 as of July 1, 2015, San Diego is the eighth-largest city in the United States and second-largest in California. It is part of the San Diego–Tijuana conurbation, the second-largest transborder agglomeration between the US and a bordering country after Detroit–Windsor, with a population of 4,922,723 people. San Diego has been called the birthplace of California. It is known for its mild year-round climate, natural deep-water harbor, extensive beaches, long association with the United States Navy, and recent emergence as a healthcare and biotechnology development center.
Historically home to the Kumeyaay people, San Diego was the first site visited by Europeans on what is now the West Coast of the United States. Upon landing in San Diego Bay in 1542, Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo claimed the area for Spain, forming the basis for the settlement of Alta California 200 years later. The Presidio and Mission San Diego de Alcalá, founded in 1769, formed the first European settlement in what is now California. In 1821, San Diego became part of the newly independent Mexico, which reformed as the First Mexican Republic two years later. In 1850, California became part of the United States following the Mexican–American War and the admission of California to the union.
The city is the seat of San Diego County and is the economic center of the region as well as the San Diego–Tijuana metropolitan area. San Diego's main economic engines are military and defense-related activities, tourism, international trade, and manufacturing. The presence of the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), with the affiliated UCSD Medical Center, has helped make the area a center of research in biotechnology.
Tourism
Tourism is a major industry owing to the city's climate, beaches, and tourist attractions such as Balboa Park, Belmont amusement park, San Diego Zoo, San Diego Zoo Safari Park, and SeaWorld San Diego. San Diego's Spanish and Mexican heritage is reflected in many historic sites across the city, such as Mission San Diego de Alcala and Old Town San Diego State Historic Park. Also, the local craft brewing industry attracts an increasing number of visitors for beer tours and the annual San Diego Beer Week in November; San Diego has been called America's Craft Beer Capital.
San Diego County hosted more than 32 million visitors in 2012; collectively they spent an estimated $8 billion. The visitor industry provides employment for more than 160,000 people.
San Diego's cruise ship industry used to be the second-largest in California. Numerous cruise lines operate out of San Diego. However, cruise ship business has been in decline since 2008, when the Port hosted over 250 ship calls and more than 900,000 passengers. By 2011 the number of ship calls had fallen to 103 (estimated).
Local sight-seeing cruises are offered in San Diego Bay and Mission Bay, as well as whale-watching cruises to observe the migration of gray whales, peaking in mid-January. Sport fishing is another popular tourist attraction; San Diego is home to Southern California's biggest sport fishing fleet.

Centennial Park, San Diego Bay, San Diego, California, United States, North America
San Diego Bay is a natural harbor and deepwater port located in San Diego County, California near the US-Mexico border. The bay, which is 12 miles (19 km) long and 1 to 3 miles (1.6 to 4.8 km) wide, is the third largest of the three large, protected natural bays on California's entire 840 miles (1,350 km) long coastline after San Francisco Bay and Humboldt Bay. The highly urbanized land adjacent to the bay includes the city of San Diego (eighth largest city in the United States) and four other cities, including National City, Chula Vista, Imperial Beach and Coronado. Considered to be one of the best natural harbors on the west coast of North America, it was colonized by Spain beginning in 1769. Later it served as base headquarters of major ships of the United States Navy in the Pacific until just before the United States entered World War II, when the newly organized United States Pacific Fleet primary base was transferred to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. However, San Diego Bay remains as a home port of major assets, including several aircraft carriers, of the United States Pacific Fleet, and as a result of base closures beginning in the 1980s, facilities in San Diego Bay are the only remaining major naval base facilities still in operation in the entire State of California. San Diego Bay's commercial port has two container ship facilities (one for refrigerated containers) and a cruise ship terminal. A second cruise ship terminal opened in December 2010. The port handles more than 3 million metric tons of cargo yearly. The cruise ship terminal hosted more than 250 ship calls a year totaling more than 800,000 passengers at its peak in 2008; since then the number of ship calls has fallen to fewer than 100 per year due to the withdrawal of regular service by major cruise lines. General Dynamics' National Steel and Shipbuilding Company (NASSCO), the only shipyard on the west coast capable of building and repairing large ocean-going vessels, is near the San Diego side of the San Diego-Coronado Bay Bridge. San Diego International Airport is also adjacent to the bay, across Harbor Drive from the Coast Guard Station.

There are also many recreational facilities and several gift shops and restaurants within the boundaries of the park. Placed in reserve in 1835, the park's site is one of the oldest in the United States dedicated to public recreational use. The park and its historic Exposition buildings were declared a National Historic Landmark and National Historic Landmark District in 1977, and placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Catamaran Hotel Resort walk through - Mission Bay San Diego Hotels Our Vacation
This video is to give you a look at the The Catamaran Resort and Spa Hotel in Mission Bay, California where we just got back from our vacation.
The Catamaran is steps away from the Pacific Ocean beach and on the Mission Bay beach. The garden at the hotel is an equal attraction. We love the garden around the hotel. Amazing and beautiful.
The room was very, very clean. We did not feature the room in our video because you can get those details elsewhere on YouTube. The big decision will be garden view, bay front or the Tower with great up high views. Because the gardens are so beautiful, we like the garden view room.
The whole property is very well maintained. We understand the hotel has been around a long time but nothing about the hotel seemed old. We did not see any sign of neglected maintenance. Nothing felt tired or run-down. It all felt new.
The hotel employees are all very nice, friendly all the way around and they obviously know how to do their jobs very well. Sometimes they call that impeccable service. It was.
The pool area is fun. Just off the pool is an arcade for the kids with all the typical video games. Except, every game in the arcade is free. You don't need to put in money. Just press start. So nice.
The Catamaran is very close to the attractions in San Diego - You can get to all of them in minutes. The San Diego Zoo, Sea World, U.S.S. Midway, downtown Gas Lamp District, Little Italy are all a very short drive. Lego Land is also nearby. Lots to do and see.
We found much of our time was spent at the hotel because there is so much to do right there. If you like bike riding, it is perfect for that. Miles of clean, wide bike path around the bay and up and down the Pacific Ocean coast. The hotel offers a free harbor cruised on a Mississippi style paddle boat. The sunset cruise lasted a little over an hour and was very romantic for us. A very nice attraction.
We were trying to decide which hotel and we are so happy we picked the Catamaran.
We did not capture everything in video. I guess we just wanted to give you as close a feel for the Catamaran as we could. I'm sure there are other hotels that are nice but for us, this was a perfect vacation. If anyone from the hotel happens upon our video, thanks for a wonderful vacation. Everything was perfect. We will stay at the Catamaran again on our next vacation.
