Balboa Park is a 1,200-acre urban cultural park in San Diego, California, United States. In addition to open space areas, natural vegetation zones, green belts, gardens, and walking paths, it contains museums, several theaters, and the world-famous San Diego Zoo. There are also many recreational facilities and several gift shops and restaurants within the boundaries of the park. Placed in reserve in 1835, the park's site is one of the oldest in the United States dedicated to public recreational use. Balboa Park is managed and maintained by the Parks and Recreation Department of the City of San Diego.
Named for the Spanish maritime explorer Vasco Núñez de Balboa, the park hosted the 1915–16 Panama–California Exposition and 1935–36 California Pacific International Exposition, both of which left architectural landmarks. The park and its historic Exposition buildings were declared a National Historic Landmark and National Historic Landmark District in 1977, and placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

360 VIEW-SAN DIEGO-CALIFORNIA TOWER-MUSEUM OF MAN-CANNIBALISM EXHIBIT-BALBOA PARK-EP50
We found ourselves back at Balboa Park in San Diego, CA and took a tour of the famous California Tower. This building was constructed for the 1915 Panama-California Exposition. The 360 degree San Diego Skyline view is amazing. All of the upper floors of the tower building were closed in 1935 to the public. After 80 years, it was finally opened in 2015, and people have been enjoying it ever since then.
This upper portion of the tower is scheduled to close AGAIN for some earthquake restraint modifications, so it could be closed during your visit. Balboa Park has so many things to do, that when it closes temporarily, you will still have tons of other things to see.
The tower also houses the Museum of Man which has many fascinating exhibits. The exhibit explores the tragic events and issues that has forced others to resort to cannibalism. Famous cases where people had no other choices to survive are displayed, studied and discussed.
Balboa Park is home to many museums, multiple performing arts venues, and lovely gardens. The Spreckels Organ is the largest outdoor organ in the world and was built in 1914 for the 1915 Panama-California International Exposition. It’s the first-of-its-kind organ designed to “roll out” and play for an outdoor audience. It is constructed with over 5,000 pipes to bring the sound alive. They have free organ concerts every Sunday afternoon!

San Diego's cruise ship industry used to be the second-largest in California. Numerous cruise lines operate out of San Diego. However, cruise ship business has been in decline since 2008, when the Port hosted over 250 ship calls and more than 900,000 passengers. By 2011 the number of ship calls had fallen to 103 (estimated).
Local sight-seeing cruises are offered in San Diego Bay and Mission Bay, as well as whale-watching cruises to observe the migration of gray whales, peaking in mid-January. Sport fishing is another popular tourist attraction; San Diego is home to Southern California's biggest sport fishing fleet.

It was an awesome and cool experience to explore in an actual aircraft carrier, fighter jets, helicopters, machine guns, missiles and etc. Everything there is so much educational and entertaining. The USS Midway Museum is the topmost attractions in San Diego, California.

National City | Historic Sites | San Diego County
Often characterized by its rich historic past, National City is in fact the second oldest city in San Diego County. Incorporated on September 17, 1887, National City was originally part of the 26,000-acre El Rancho de la Nacion, which was purchased in 1868 by Frank Kimball and his brothers Warren and Levi. The Kimballs cleared lands, built roads, constructed the City's first wharf and brought the railroad to the City.
The Kimball’s and other early visionary leaders of National City are embodied in the historical buildings and landscape dotted throughout the City. Granger Music Hall, 1615 East 4th Street
Ralph Granger, who struck it rich in the silver mines of Colorado and was making $5,000 a day through the 1890's, located his family on an estate in Paradise Valley (8th Street).His love of violins led to his purchase of a large and expensive string collection, which prompted him to hire San Diego architect Irving Gill to build a private music hall for him near his house.
Brick Row on Heritage Square, 909 A Avenue Designed by San Diego architect R. C. Ball (who designed Folsom Prison), it was constructed by Frank Kimball in 1887 for $30,000.These 10 individual row houses were to be used by the executives of the Santa Fe Railroad. This architectural style is unique to this region and was molded after the row houses of Philadelphia and similar eastern cities. It was hoped that the railroad VIPs would not only feel at home surrounded by familiar architecture, but also be impressed by the cosmopolitan appearance of the young city. All the apartments have a formal dining room with fireplace, a kitchen, a parlor with fireplace, a butler's pantry, and four bedrooms upstairs.
Santa Fe Rail Depot, 922 West 23rd Street

Built in 1882, the Santa Fe Rail Depot is the only original transcontinental railroad terminus in the United States that is still standing. On November 14, 1885, the first train left from National City to Waterman (renamed Barstow in 1886), 78 miles from its transcontinental link in San Bernadino.

Once owned by National City founder Frank Kimball, the railcar played a significant role in transportation, serving as the region's first commuter-type train dedicated to passengers. Even the legendary Wyatt Earp rode the train!
St. Matthews Episcopal Church, 521 E. 8th Street
In 1872, the Kimball brothers donated a parcel of land for the future building of a church. The Episcopal Society was organized in 1882 and Frank Kimball was elected secretary. St. Matthews Church was built five years later. Designed by Chula Vista architect William Herman, it was patterned after an English Countryside church.

The museum was first opened to the public on February 15, 1963 in the Food and Beverage Building, which had been built in 1915 for the Panama–California Exposition.[10] In 1965 the museum was moved to the larger Electrical Building.
On February 22, 1978 the Electrical Building and the Museum were destroyed in an arson fire.[11][12] Several one-of-a-kind aircraft were destroyed, including the Beecraft Wee Bee, the world's lightest aircraft, and her sister craft the Queen Bee. A reproduction of the Spirit of St. Louis, built in 1967 by some of the same people who built the original, was also destroyed, along with more than 50 other aircraft, an extensive collection of artifacts and archives, and the International Aerospace Hall of Fame.[12][13] Owen Clarke, the museum's executive director, said of the $4 million in losses, This is unbelievably tragic. When you've spent that length of time acquiring history, building something up to where it had international prestige, then see it all disappear in a couple of hours, what else can it be?[14]

A Walk Through the San Diego Air and Space Museum
This is the fourth of my walk through videos of aviation museums that I visited during my three day planned layover in the Los Angeles area between Parts 1 & 2 of my Train Odyssey 2. In addition to these museums, I also have videos for my walk throughs of the Petersen Automotive Museum, the Queen Mary, and the San Diego Automotive Museum (part of the Petersen video). The Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (MCASD) is located in La Jolla and has a branch located at the Santa Fe Depot downtown. The downtown branch consists of two building on two opposite streets. The Columbia district downtown is home to historic ship exhibits belonging to the San Diego Maritime Museum, headlined by the Star of India, as well as the unrelated San Diego Aircraft Carrier Museum featuring the USS Midway aircraft carrier.
