San Michele di Pagana ( San Michê in Liguria ) is a fraction of the municipality of Rapallo . It is about 2 km from the center of Rapallo and as many from the nearby coastal town of Santa Margherita Ligure , with which the village borders. The locality is officially recognized by the municipal authority as sestiere of the City of Rapallo, historical medieval division of the town.
The town is the only Rapallo fraction that overlooks the sea, in the Gulf of Tigullio . It is divided into two geographical parts, a hill and the area of the marina, and in fact the altimetry of the place varies from 3 m above sea level (coastal part) up to a maximum of 25 m above sea level. The locality enjoys a prized Mediterranean climate , like many coastal towns in Liguria , which rarely records a sharp drop in temperatures during the winter and a high value in the summer season.
The maritime coast is divided mainly into three small gulfs: Pomaro, Trelo (or Travello) and Prelo, each enclosed in the classic and typical Ligurian village with a few houses, tall, narrow and by the sea. The three inlets are connected by a characteristic narrow cliff that runs along the sea and crosses the three marine cores.
The bay of Pomaro, the first that meets from Rapallo to Santa Margherita Ligure , is the central and main nucleus of San Michele: here are located several commercial activities and bathing establishments. Characteristic are the few porticoes present, already shelter of small fishing boats when the seaside village, like similar Ligurian villages, made fishing its main work and livelihood; in some vintage photographs and prints, the porticoes were used as working premises for the local lace-makers active in making lace and bobbin lace, typical of the Rapallo area and the Tigullino district.
In the local division the sestiere of San Michele includes the following hill towns: Banchi, Briscalli, Capo San Michele, Case Nuove, Castagnino, Cavetto, Costa Burrasca, Costa dei Merelli, Costigliolo, Langan, Maggio, Montemezzano, Pamini, Pietrafredda, Quattro Strade , Rimessa (known locally with the toponym Saltincielo), San Nicola and Zuffola; and those of Pomaro, Trelo or Travello, Prelo and Punta Pagana. The sestiere is the only one of the six historical divisions that does not belong to the central Rapallo parish of Saints Gervasio and Protasio : it is in fact included in the territory of the local parish of San Michele Arcangelo .
The only cult building in the hamlet is the parish church of San Michele Arcangelo . According to a plaque the first dating of the church dates back to 1133 and probably built on the remains of a pre-existing pagan building. The parish church will undergo changes to the structure in the years 1581, 1604, 1749 and 1793 thanks to various donations and Genoese funds. With a single aisle, among the works of art present there is the canvas of the Crucifixion by the Flemish painter Van Dyck , painted during his stay in San Michele di Pagana between 1621 and 1624.
In the Sanmichelino area there are many civil buildings, mostly villas and private residences built between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries with the increase of the tourist flow and stay. One of the most famous Villa Pagana , from 1959 one of the Magisterial residences of the Grand Master of the Order of Malta.
On the administrative border between Rapallo and Santa Margherita Ligure is located the villa del Trattato, whose original name was Villa Spinola. Other buildings of the fraction the Varzi palace, formerly Figari, built in the early twentieth century; the Piaggio villa from 1910-1912; the Lagomaggiore villa, then Bruzzo, on the cliff that closes the bay of San Michele to the east.

Mino Modding - Da Santa Margherita Ligure a Rapallo passando per San Michele
Parlando con qualche amico, mi sono reso conto che la strada che mia moglie fa tutti i giorni per andare al lavoro è un qualcosa di invidiato da molti. Ho deciso di fare questo video anche per far vedere uno spezzone del tanto contestato Red Carpet che parte dal Castello di Rapallo ed arriva in piazzetta a Portofino. La vera ed unica ragione per la realizzazione del Red Carpet è proprio qui, il nuovo marciapiede che rende la strada Pagana percorribile in sicurezza. Strada consigliata sia in bici che in moto, per chi è in macchina attenzione alle curve ed alle strettoie. Percorrere questo tratto a piedi richiede meno di 20 minuti ed è decisamente pittoresco specie nel tratto di San Michele di Pagana.
Si parte dalla rotatoria di Santa Margherita Ligure, dal capolinea degli autobus, e finisce all'imboccatura del Porto Carlo Riva di Rapallo, da li si può usufruire del parcheggio e farsi un giretto a Rapallo.
