Kyoto shopping streets, Sannenzaka, Ninenzaka, Kiyomizuzaka, Japan travel video
In Kyoto, Japan, we're going shopping on the lanes near two major temples, Kiyomizu-dera and Ginkaku-ji. There are some small shops inside the temple but the main action for shopping is outside on the pedestrian lane leading up to the temple as you find typically throughout Japan. A main temple has a shopping street leading to it, something like the inevitable gift shop at the exit of the museum.
Ceramics are one of the very popular items for sale here and they are made not only in Japan but a lot of it is made right in the Kyoto area, it's a local specialty.
Of course you'll find all of the typical items for sale: fans, trinkets, miniature samurai figures and figurines. You can buy handbags and purses made from kimono material. Perhaps a Japanese print or a painting to hang on your wall. But some careful shoppers have noticed the prices on these touristic lanes are little higher than you'll find in downtown and the selection is pretty much the same everywhere, so keep that in mind. But when you're shopping, if you see something you love, just get it. You might never find it again.
It's a fun diversion on your way up to the temple to shop along the way to Ginkaku-ji, but really the shopping lane over by Kiyomizu-dera is hard to beat.
Kyoto, Japan: Kiyomizu-dera Temple and shopping along Sannenzaka - part 3 of 5
Kiyomizu-dera in Kyoto, Japan, is the most popular temple in all of Kyoto and it's usually crowded - often with lots of tour groups.
This video was photographed in the off-season which was the first week of December and even then it was fairly busy -- comfortable, nice to have some other people around, so no problem, but if you're here in the peak season during the summer in the middle of the day there will be so many people you'll have a hard time getting to the railing to enjoy a clear view of the beautiful scenery.
The main hall is the most spectacular single item here. It’s up on large wooden stilts and designated as a national treasure.
Large verandas and main halls like this were constructed at many popular sites in the past to accommodate large numbers of pilgrims.
And then we have the views looking out across from the main hall into downtown.
Looking up towards the temple which is up on the hillside.
The temple is actually so old that it predates Kyoto itself. It dates back to the 700s, before Kyoto was founded as a city. Of course the structures have been rebuilt numerous times since then. There are some 30 buildings here and most were constructed in the early Edo period, in the early 1630s.
Then we take a walk on the Sannenzaka shopping lane. You'll find the vendors are quite friendly and many of them speak a little English. You can pick from a variety of Japan-made goods, there's fans and bags and wallets, ceramics, lacquer dishes.
This is part of our series on the temples and gardens of Eastern Kyoto, the Higashiyama district, and also we’ll take you downtown in some of our other videos.

Exploring Kyoto: Southern Higashiyama - Japan Vlog
Exploring the old Japanese streets of Southern Higashiyama in Kyoto.
Higashiyama is one of the main sightseeing districts in Kyoto, where you can walk along old Japanese streets and see old wooden machiya town houses. It's also very busy and touristy! One of the main temples in the area is Kiyomizudera. You can also see the Kamogawa River, which runs through the middle of Kyoto. We went for kakigori, then curry udon at a restaurant called Mimikou:

Kinkakuji, Gudetama & Kushiage - Kyoto Vlog
Visiting Kinkakuji the Golden Temple in Kyoto (it really is stunning!), a Gudetama stamp rally and eating kushiage in Kyoto.
We found the Gudetama stamp rally at the Randen tram station in Arashiyama, which is a fun way to get from there to Kinkakuji. There's also a cute kimono forest at the station.
Kinkakuji is one of the major temples in Kyoto and one of the most popular tourist attractions. It wasn't top of my list to visit, but it was absolutely stunning. It's covered in gold, and I wasn't prepared for how shining and perfect it looked!
It started raining heavily after we visited Kinkakuji, so instead of going to Gion as planned, we went to a kushiage restaurant near Kyoto Station. They had vegetarian options but it was quite pricey. I'm glad I got to try kushiage, but I think there are better options around. Full details will be in my blog post on cakeswithfaces.co.uk

Kyoto Travel Guide - Experience Japan
Kyoto Travel Guide - Experience Japan
Kyoto (京都) was the capital of Japan for over a millennium, and carries a reputation as its most beautiful city and the nation's cultural capital. However, visitors may be surprised by how much work they will have to do to see Kyoto's beautiful side. Most first impressions of the city will be of the urban sprawl of central Kyoto, around the ultra-modern glass-and-steel train station, which is itself an example of a city steeped in tradition colliding with the modern world. Nonetheless, the persistent visitor will soon discover Kyoto's hidden beauty in the temples and parks which ring the city center, and find that the city has much more to offer than immediately meets the eye.
Though dwarfed in size by other major Japanese cities, Kyoto is vast in terms of its rich cultural heritage - the material endowment of over a thousand years as the country's imperial capital. The city's numerous palaces, shrines, temples and other landmarks are spread out over the following districts:
Central - Site of Nijō Castle (a former residence of the Tokugawa shōguns) and the stately grounds of the Imperial Palace. The district's southern end is anchored by the massive glass-and-steel building of the city's main gateway, Kyoto Station.
Arashiyama (Western Kyoto) Set against the beautiful tree-covered hills of Arashiyama, this district is rich in both historic and natural wonders.
Higashiyama (Eastern Kyoto) estled between the Kamo River and the temple-studded mountains of Higashiyama, this area's many attractions include the famed geisha district of Gion and the historic sites strung alongside the well-known Philosopher's Path.
North Graced with scores of centuries-old shrines and temples, including several World Heritage Sites. One of Kyoto's most famous attractions - the magnificent gilded pavilion of Kinkaku-ji - can be found here.
South This district covers a large part of Japan's former capital, stretching from the Ōharano area in the west to Fushimi-ku, Daigo, and the southern tip of Higashiyama-ku in the east.
Nestled among the mountains of Western Honshu, Kyoto was the capital of Japan and the residence of the Emperor from 794 until the Meiji Restoration of 1868, when the capital was moved to Tokyo. During its millennium at the center of Japanese power, culture, tradition, and religion, it accumulated an unparalleled collection of palaces, temples and shrines, built for emperors, shoguns, and monks. Kyoto was among the few Japanese cities that escaped the allied bombings of World War II and as a result, Kyoto still has an abundance of prewar buildings, such as the traditional townhouses known as machiya. However the city is continuously undergoing modernization with some of the traditional Kyoto buildings being replaced by newer architecture, such as the Kyoto Station complex.
The sheer size of the city of Kyoto, and the distribution of tourist attractions around the periphery of the city, make the city's public transport system invaluable. Kyoto offers an incredible number of attractions for tourists, and visitors will probably need to plan an itinerary in advance in order to visit as many as possible.
Kyoto has a wide range of accommodation, much of it geared towards foreign visitors. During peak seasons, such as the cherry blossoms in April or during Golden Week when accommodation is difficult to get, consider staying in Osaka. A thirty minute train ride from Kyoto Station to Osaka Station will cost you ¥540 one way. Since Kyoto is a major tourist destination, demand is high and prices follow suit.

Kyoto, Japan introduction Inari Tofukuji part 1
Kyoto, Japan’s majestic city of ancient temples and serene gardens, offers superb cultural treasures and a variety of sensual delights. Your most enjoyable activity will probably be strolling through artistically designed garden landscapes with their winding paths, tranquil ponds, stately trees, lush vegetation and traditional wooden temples, so wear comfortable shoes and be prepared to do a lot of walking.
We’re going to take you on some wonderful strolls through the gardens, around the temples and into downtown, and show you the highlights of this magnificent city.
Kyoto’s modern downtown is also fascinating, filled with shops, restaurants, historic structures, the occasional geisha, and plentiful people-watching.
The sublime gardens unfold as you walk along paths that lead through changing vistas around each bend, where you can stop frequently to absorb each new perspective looking left, right, up and down. The different views are enhanced by small statues, foot-bridges, bamboo railings, temple back-drops and glimpses of distant mountains, all exquisitely arranged to be appreciated in moments of reflection.
Kyoto was ranked as the number one visitor destination in the world by the readers of Travel and Leisure magazine for two years in a row in 2014 and 2015, quite an honor.
This is an expanded version that combines several earlier movies.

Heian-jingu temple and gardens, Kyoto, Japan travel video
Arriving at Heian-jingo in Kyoto, Japan. This is actually one of the newer temples in Kyoto, built at the end of the 19th century, and of course built in a very traditional style. This kind of architecture really dates back 300, 400 or even 500 years.
This reproduction of an Imperial Palace was constructed in 1895, complete with shrines and a vast garden complex with ponds, islands and Chinese-Japanese-style landscaping.
And it’s a very large temple complex with some beautiful gardens out in the back.
There are always well-tended paths through the gardens
Notice all of the colors in the trees. We were quite fortunate to be catching the tail end of the fall season. Even though it's the first week of December the weather was fairly moderate, and generally the colors do linger into the early part of December.
Often you have a pond or several ponds like this with pretty reflections of the vegetation.
The temples have wonderful wooden architecture, and yet the gardens all around, probably is even more of an interesting attraction than the buildings themselves.
One reason this grand temple and gardens were created in the late 19th century was in reaction to Kyoto being replaced as the capital of Japan, by Tokyo. For 1000 years Kyoto had been the capital of the country and when the capital was moved to Tokyo in 1868 it caused some decline in the prosperity and mood of the city and this temple was constructed 30 years later as a response of the city to revitalize.
The garden all around the pond is 30,000 square meters in size and divided in four sections with a variety of birds such as kingfishers and large falcons.
Here's a gardener out in a boat reaching some of the areas that are on islands in the middle of the pond.
Afterwards you might take a walk through the public park in front towards the huge metal torii – biggest in town – and consider a visit to the National Museum of Modern Art, with its large collection of paintings and ceramics. The Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art is just behind.
