JAPAN: TOKYO: WORLDS BIGGEST RECORD STORE
Japanese/English/Nat
An American company opened the world's biggest record store in Japan on Friday - and is set to cash in on the yen's strength against the dollar.
A strong yen could mean bigger profits for Tower Records' new branch in Tokyo.
Most of its stock is imported and becomes cheaper the more the yen rises against foreign currencies.
The same effect may also force more Japanese companies to move production abroad to cut costs.
Tower Record's store in Shibuya, a fashionable shopping area in western Tokyo, is the company's 23rd outlet in Japan - the largest number of Tower stores in any country outside the United States.
Ironically, it will benefit from a strong yen as most of its goods are imported - although that's not the only reason for setting up the shop in affluent Tokyo.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
Certainly as we sell most of our product - maybe 70-80 percent of our product is imported - it's very good for us that the yen has made such a big move. I don't know that it's so good, particularly for America. Anyway, our concentration has certainly been in putting the store together and getting our stock in and all this sort of thing.
SUPER CAPTION: Keith Cahoon, Tower Records Far East Managing Director
One Japanese shopper thinks the strong yen's a good thing.
SOUNDBITE: (Japanese)
(customer holds up the CD he's buying and says)
This isn't bad .... now I can buy CDs more.
(meaning the price has dropped by 30 percent)
SUPER CAPTION: none
A leading economist believes that some people - but not everyone in Japan - stands to gain from a strong yen.
SOUNDBITE: (Japanese)
Well, definitely importing companies and Japanese travellers will benefit from the sharp appreciation of the yen against the US dollar and also some Asian companies who peg (their currencies) to the US dollar may benefit in some overseas markets. Japanese companies may lose price competitiveness with the sharp appreciation of the yen.
SUPER CAPTION: Susumu Kato, Chief Economist, CS First Boston
Japanese companies making lots of goods abroad will benefit - those manufacturing at home less so.
SOUNDBITE: (Japanese)
Particularly 12 inch TVs are mostly manufactured in the foreign factories of big Japanese makers - and benefited greatly by high yen, the prices got fairly low. But these large sized TVs and other advanced domestic products hardly changed prices - to sell these products we have to try very hard.
SUPER CAPTION: Fumio Shiosawa, Manager of TV shop
A continuing rise in the yen's value could see more Japanese firms moving production abroad - although small firms will not find it easy.
SUPER CAPTION: (Japanese)
First of all, the big manufacturing companies have already been shifting to South-East Asia their production and by farther appreciation of the yen I think big companies will continue to invest in overseas market to produce there. However, small companies will find it difficult to follow big companies because it costs a lot and because it's not clear whether the Japanese yen will continue to appreciate or not, so small companies decisions will be quite difficult.
SUPER CAPTION: Susumu Kato, Chief Economist, CS First Boston
However, Japanese investment overseas is hardly new, and it's unclear yet whether the yen's current strength will greatly accelerate such investment.

[Series] Japan's hidden listening bars
We are exploring Japan's rich culture of listening bars and audiophile venues. It's a culture rooted in the joy of discovering music, and listening to that music in the best possible environment—that means precision-made speakers, amps, turntables and mixers. Tucked away in basements, back-alleys and high-rise buildings, these bars come in different shapes and sizes, but they are united by their pursuit of quality, with owners endlessly fine-tuning their audio setups to create an enriching experience for anyone who visits. These are wonderful settings for people to share their love of music, serving as a third place—somewhere to unwind in between their time at work and home. Though they're the result of long-standing traditions, listening bars offer a glimpse into progressive Japan, one of the world's most vibrant places for music discovery.

Guide To Shibuya, Japan | Meiji Shrine | Part 2
Hey Everyone!
Where: Meiji Shrine
Location: Shibuya Tokyo Japan
Today we’re continuing our time in Shibuya, Japan. We’re continuing with Meiji Shrine - one of my favorite places in Tokyo.
Meiji Shrine is a shrine dedicated to Emperor Meiji - the emperor during the Meiji Restoration. The Meiji Restoration ended centuries of feudal fighting in Japan and unified Japan as the Emperor of all of Japan again. So, needless to say, he was and is an important figure.
This is one of my favorite parts of Tokyo. It is rather touristy but it isn’t ever too crowded, it is covered by massive trees, and it is close to the hustle and bustle of the rest of Tokyo.
The purpose of this channel is to hopefully give people an honest look at life in Japan, give you the tools to experience it in an authentic way and get outside of the typical Japan Travel Tips. There is so much of Japan to see that isn’t covered in the typical guide books and I hope my future Tokyo vlog will help people access those experiences. For the first few months however, I will be putting out more of the typical Japan vlogs and helpful videos to get you around this city!
Thanks for watching! Hope you enjoy this Japan vlog!

Konnichiwa guys!
If you are staying a hotel in Shibuya, this bar tour is a must at night!
Shibuya is one of the most popular districts in Japan. It's especially famous for the Shibuya crossing handling 2 million people everyday. And of course, no one comes to Tokyo without taking a picture with the famous Hachiko statue for Instagram.
While most tourists go to Shibuya, Tokyo by day. we are here to show you how Shibuya is by night.
The Hachiko statue becomes the meeting point where hundreds of people wait for their friends and dates, and then go enjoy the fun night of Shibuya.
On the night of the Shibuya bar hopping night tour, our friendly local tour guide will wait for you right outside of Shibuya station, like a real local! You will then pub crawl to 3 unknown Japanese Izakaya style bars with a guide: two of them are located in a hidden meat alley and the other one is in Dogen zaka area. The hidden meat alley is one of highlights of this tour!
Many tiny pubs and bars offering various types of food and drinks hide in this alley in a building. Unlike other food alleys, this alley's festival atmosphere is a whole floor in a huge building that hosts many types of local bars and pubs!
Each restaurant has different style of meat presentation and preparation.
MagicalTrip carefully handpicked the best food & drinks combos, enough for a full dinner meal.
You can select from various types (over 30 kinds) of recommended foods and drinks like teppan, meat-sushi, Japanese steak, sake, Japanese whiskey, beer and more! Of course, there are vegetarian menus, so don't worry.
You can order the foods you like based on the tour guide's explanation and recommendation in each Izakaya bar, so don't worry even if you are a vegetarian or have food allergies.
We offer food & drinks at a special price much cheaper than the actual price!
Of course, you can order additional food and drinks at each bar on your own.
We have another bar hopping tour in Shinjuku (Tokyo Bar Hopping in Shinjuku) that helps you navigate through other food alleys with the different atmosphere and different types of menu (Yakitori, various types of Sake etc). So if you like Shibuya bar hopping tour, why don't you try Tokyo bar hopping in Shinjuku as well??
Let's try together local foods and drinks that you can only try in Shibuya during this tour!
