Shimogamo Shrine (下鴨神社), Kyoto City, Japan
The Kamigamo and Shimogao Shrines (上鴨神社 下鴨神社), known as the Kamo Shrines are designated as the UNESCO World Heritage Sites of ancient Kyoto. They are located in Kyoto City, Japan.
While Kamigamo Shrine (known as upper shrine), is located further north of the Shimogamo Shrine (known as the lower shrine), both shrines are located around northeast of Kyoto City.
Both Kamo shrines are founded by Kamo Clan of ancient Japan in the 8th century. Enshrined here are the god Kamotakatsunemino Mikoto and his daughter Tamayorihime-no Mikoto, who is said to have been impregnated by an arrow that floated down by the Kamo River, subsequently giving birth to Kamo-wakeikazuchi, the god who is enshrined at Kamigamo Shrine. Since the founding of Kyoto as the capital of Japan in 794, this shrine played an important role in protecting the Imperial Palaces and acting as an important venue for various royal ceremonial rites.
The precints around the Shrine include a forest called Tadasuno Mori, a wooded area covering 120,000 square meters. The forest is an important botanical site and it's ecological status has not changed since ancient times. It also acts as an important place for the tourists to take a break and enjoy the autumn foliage and snow covered trees, in those seasons.
Both Kamigamo and Shimogamo Shrines, host the AOI (blue) festival, which is one of the three important festivals in Japan. During this festival the Heian era traditions are enacted in various fashions, including archery contests.
Hope you get a chance to visit and enjoy this shrine.

Kyoto Festival: Japanese Mounted Archery at Shimogamo Shrine (Yabusume Shinji) [4K]
Every year in May Kyoto begins to buzz with excitement as the Aoi Matsuri (Hollyhock Festival), one of the three biggest festivals in the city, draws near. Though the festival procession itself falls on the 15th of the month, various rituals and ceremonial preparations begin to take place from the first week of May, drawing thousands of visitors and worshippers from around the country and from abroad. Centered on the Kamo Shrines, Shimogamo Shrine and Kamigamo Shrine, the fesitivites range from sedate purification rituals to high-paced horse races.
On May 3rd at Shimogamo Shrine, one of these prepatory events occurs within the green canapy of the Tadasu no Mori forest leading up to the shrine proper from 1pm. The Yabusame Shinji, or Mounted Archery Ritual, is conducted to pray for the safety of the procession and purify the parade route. Performed by archers of the Ogasawara school, a style that traces its history back about 850 years, riders thunder down a 500m lane firing arrows at three targets along the way. Each time an archer hit the target a cheer springs up from the assembled crowd, and the sound of thundering hoofbeats growing closer and closer let people know something exciting is about to happen. If you're in town for Golden Week or the Aoi Matsuri, be sure not to miss this dynamic ritual and display of martial prowess!

Shimogamo Jinja Shrine Kyoto Japan - Year of the Pig
Shimogamo Jinja Shrine (Kamomioya Jinja Shrine) is one of the oldest shrines in Kyoto and World Heritage Sites. In the precincts there are lush greenery, clear streams are flowing (Tadasu-no-mori). The two main shrines of Shimogamo are dedicated to the two main gods, Kamotaketsunomi-no-mikoto and Tamayorihime-no-mikoto, whose stories are written above. Formally known as the Inoue Sha, this shrine is dedicated to the god of purification and clean water. Its pond is appropriately the location of the autumnal purification festivals. Aioi-sha, this shrine is dedicated to the god of good marriage and the guardian of engagement, Kamumusub-no-Kami. This shrine is dedicated to the god Tamayorihime - Mikoto , distinct from the main Shimogamo god of the same name . Kawai Shrine, this god serves as the guardian for women, and her shrine has long been considered one of the most important. However, one of its most famous residents was male. 2019 is the year of the Pig in Chinese zodiac.

☆Bits of knowledge〜Shimogamo Shrine〜
Located on the southern banks of the Kamo river, Kamomioya-jinja both reflects and inspires Kyoto City. Even its common name is a product of the city. “Shimo-,” meaning lower, and “-gamo,” after the city’s central river, yields the familiar Shimogamo. The creator and guardian of the city, Kamotaketsunomi-no-mikoto, is enshrined in the main sanctuary of the shrine, along his daughter Tamayorihime-no-mikoto, a mythical figure with her own repute. Together these deities welcome and protect all who visit the shrine, from Kyoto and beyond.

Hotaru-bi no Chakai: Green tea and fireflies. Shimogamo Shrine, Kyoto 【HD】
The Shimogamo Jinja is one of the most important Shinto Shrines of Japan, with more than 2000 years of history. The first record of building structures here dates back to the year 686 a.d.
Around the year, many festivals and ceremonies take place here, including the famous Aoi Matsuri, one of Kyoto's largest celebrations. This year, on June 9, a special ceremony called Hotaru-bi no Cha-kai, or green tea and fireflies light evening took place. In this ceremony, they release about 600 fireflies on the Shrine grounds.
In the video we first see the south gate of the Shrine, then the Aioi-sha and the Renri no Sasaki, a sacred three that is considered one of the Seven Wonders of Kyoto. After this we see a Koto concert followed by a Bugaku Dance performance, in which the dancer is wearing a 12 layers robe, know as a Juni-hitoe.
The scene at the end of the video is the moment when they open the cage containing the fireflies. It's very dark and hard to see, but if you turn off the lights in your room, you'll see the fireflies light.
