Meiji Jingu: A Shinto Shrine Surrounded by Forest
Located near Harajuku Station and one of Tokyo's top attractions, Meiji Jingu is situated in the middle of a huge forest. The shrine was completed in 1921 and dedicated to Emperor Meiji and his wife Empress Shoken. Most of the buildings were destroyed during World War II but thanks to a fundraising effort, the shrine was reconstructed in 1958. The area is covered by 120,000 trees consisting of 365 different species, which were donated by people from all over Japan.

#22 TSUKIJI FISH MARKET, HARAJUKU AND SHIBUYA INTERSECTION IN TOKYO
With our karaoke hangovers we headed to Meiji Jingu Shine. The walk to the shrine was beautiful through the park and the trees lining the way. We weren't allowed to take pictures or videos but we saw a wedding taking place which looked really special (even in the rain).
Our next sightseeing destination in Tokyo was Harajuku. This is a really vibrant area. We saw the cat and owl cafe but didn't go in because the cover charges seemed expensive. We have tried to do as many free sightseeing areas as we could in Tokyo and Meiji Shrine and Harajuku are both free activities.
Harajuku has a lot of punk and alternative shops but they also have something else very unusual. They have doll shops. As in you can go in and buy yourself a doll outfit. We saw a few people walking around dressed like dolls. They go to a lot of effort with the outfit, hair and makeup.
There are also loads of crepe shops in this area. I obviously went for the triple chocolate filling.
We brought a 24 hour metro pass for 600 JPY and headed to Shibuya Intersection which is one of the most famous pedestrian crossings in the world. We wouldn't normal go to a Starbucks as we tend to favour local places over chains however, the Starbucks here had an amazing view of the crossing so we decided it was worth it.
After a quick coffee stop we were pretty hungry so went for more Japanese food. I had chicken and Chris had Pork. The food prices in Tokyo are actually cheaper than our other destinations in Japan. Probably about 25% cheaper which is great for our budget.
The following day we went to Tsukiji Fish Market to try either Sushi or Sashimi. We knew we were going to blow the budget here but we heard it was the absolute best so we had to give it a go. We walked around of ages looking at all the stalls and finally settled on a restaurant. We loved the food and would definitely go back to the Fish Market if ever we go to Tokyo again.
With our full bellies we made our way to Senso-ji Temple which is one of the most important Temples in Japan.
On the way out I spotted this cake, bready thing which I had watched a food blogger, Mark Wiens eat before so I wanted to give it a try. It was so delicious and huge! Like a giant doughnut, sweet bread. Gutted that we only found it on our last day.
We've had the best time in Japan. One of our favourite countries but its time to move on. Hong Kong here we come!!

Asakusa (浅草) is a district in Taitō, Tokyo, Japan, famous for the Sensō-ji, a Buddhist temple dedicated to the bodhisattva Kannon. There are several other temples in Asakusa, as well as various festivals, such as the Sanja Matsuri.
The development of Asakusa as an entertainment district during the Edo period came about in part because of the neighboring district, Kuramae. Kuramae was a district of storehouses for rice, which was then used as payment for servants of the feudal government. The keepers (fudasashi) of these storage houses initially stored the rice for a small fee, but over the years began exchanging the rice for money or selling it to local shopkeepers at a margin. Through such trading, many fudasashi came to have a considerable amount of disposable income and as result theaters and geisha houses began to spring up in nearby Asakusa.
For most of the twentieth century, Asakusa remained a major entertainment district in Tokyo. The rokku or Sixth District was in particular famous as a theater district, featuring famous cinemas such as the Denkikan. The golden years of Asakusa are vividly portrayed in Yasunari Kawabata's novel The Scarlet Gang of Asakusa (1930; English translation, 2005). The area was heavily damaged by US bombing raids during World War II, particularly the 10 March 1945 firebombing of Tokyo. The area was rebuilt after the war, but has now been surpassed by Shinjuku and other colorful areas in the city, in its role as a pleasure district.
- TEMPLE IN ASAKUSA
Next to the Sensō-ji temple grounds is a small amusement park called Hanayashiki, which claims to be the oldest amusement park in Japan. The neighborhood theaters specialize in showing classic Japanese films, as many of the tourists are elderly Japanese.
Cruises down the Sumida River depart from a wharf a five-minute walk from the temple.
Asakusa is Tokyo's oldest geisha district, and still has 45 actively working geisha.
Because of its colourful location, downtown credentials, and relaxed atmosphere by Tokyo standards, Asakusa is a popular accommodation choice for budget travelers.
- SANJA MATSURI
Although there are many festivals throughout the year in Asakusa, the most famous of them is the Sanja Matsuri, also known as Sanja Festival in May.[5] In this festival, Mikoshi (portable shrines) and floats are pulled through the streets while loud shouts accompany them, and during the festival’s 3 days, 1.5 million people come out to celebrate.

Our 7 Day Trip to Japan - From Tokyo to Kyoto
Our 7 Day Japan travel itinerary! We had the amazing opportunity to visit Tokyo, Hakone, Kyoto and Nara! From eating delicious A5 Wagyu Kobe beef, to staying at a luxurious traditional Japanese Ryoken, we loved experiencing this beautiful country!
Day 1: When Kevin and I arrived in Narita, we took the JR Narita Express for a scenic ride to Tokyo. We arrived to our hotel, Cerulean Tower Tokyu in Shibuya, and dropped off our luggage before heading out for dinner! Surrounded in a sea of people crossing streets, large billboards showcasing advertisements, and stores everywhere the eye could see, we searched for a restaurant to eat at. We began our Japanese culinary experience at Ichiran Ramen, as we ordered our meal from a Ramen vending machine. When we entered the eating area of the restaurant, I was surprised to see that the restaurant had little individual booths for the customers to eat at. Finishing dinner, we spent the evening walking through the brightly light streets of Shibuya.
Day 2: Waking up early, we started our morning by visiting the Meiji Jingu Shrine. The walk to the shrine was magical, with the light beautifully streaming through the trees. We continued our journey in Chiyoda city, visiting the Hie Shrine, the Hotel New Otani Garden and a lovely botanical garden. We ate brunch at A Happy Pancake Omotesando before stopping by the the Pokemon Center Tokyo DX! Next, we visited the Tokyo Underground Mall and grabbed fresh Taiyaki, before heading back to Shibuya.
Day 3: We couldn’t visit Japan without visiting Tokyo DisneySea! I found two areas of the park to be magical - Ariel’s Mermaid Lagoon and Aladdin’s Arabian Coast! We spent about four hours exploring before heading back to Tokyo to visit the Imperial Palace. Our next stop was the Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden, and this was perhaps my favorite spot in Tokyo! Even in the rain, the garden was so incredibly beautiful, it didn’t even seem real! Given the chance, I would most definitely visit this Garden again. We ended our day by eating dinner at Katsukura Shinjuku Takashimaya, which was very delicious! Our best meal so far in Japan.
Day 4: We ended our time in Tokyo, taking the Shinkansen to Hakone! Traveling on the bullet train was an awesome experience, and once we arrived in Hakone, we took an hour long scenic train ride up a mountain to our traditional Japanese Ryokan, Gora Kadan. Arriving much earlier then check-in, the Ryokan couldn’t have been more accommodating. We sipped coffee and tea before venturing out. Kevin initially wanted to visit the Hakone Ropeway, but unfortunately it was closed due to volcanic activity. Instead, we visited the Hakone Botanical Gardens and wetlands and grabbed breakfast at their adorable cafe. It was so relaxing walking through the garden, admiring the nearby mountains. Leaving the garden, we took a bus to the Hakone Pirate Ship and enjoyed a ride to the beautiful Jinjya Heiwa-no-Torli shrine. After spending the early afternoon exploring, we headed back to Gora Kadan and checked-in. We met our personal attendant who gave us a tour of our hotel before bringing us to our room and serving us green tea and red bean mochi. It was so fun exploring our room, named Matsu. We had a personal private onsen located on the balcony. We enjoyed the hotel’s spa-like amenities before being served a ten course dinner in our room (a two hour experience)!
Day 5: Choosing to leave the Ryokan early, we took the bullet train for a three hour ride to Kyoto. After dropping off our luggage at Hotel Granvia Kyoto (the most convenient hotel ever, situated right at the train station), we visited the Fushimi Inari Taisha shrine. The beginning of the shrine was full with natives and foreigners alike. I loved hiking up the mountain, and exploring all of the little shrines that lead to the main shrine at the top of the mountain. Leaving the shine, we nibbled on some yummy street food, did a little souvenir shopping, before trying chicken ramen at Men Ken Boy Ren. We continued our Kyoto adventuring at Kameyama Park and enjoyed the lush bamboo forrest. We visited the Tenryu-ji temple before heading to Kobe to enjoy a luxurious meal at the Wakkoqu Steakhouse.
Day 6: On our last full day in Japan, we visited Nara Park. I loved Nara, as we were able to visit several temples, shrines and botanical gardens in a condensed area. Everywhere we walked, deer surrounded us. While we didn’t buy any food to feed the deer, they still approached us! My favorite Buddhist temple by far was the Todai-ji. We were greeted by three huge statues made out of gold! It was incredible to see the craftsmanship. We also visited the Kasuga-taisha shrine and the Mayo Botanical Garden.
Day 7: On our last day in Japan, Kevin surprised me by taking us to Arashiyama Rilakkuma Tea House. While we didn’t have time to eat at the cafe, but I still enjoyed eating my Rilakkuma ice cream and the cutest shopping.

May 14, 2018
This video includes the second part of that long day in Kyoto. We start right away at Kinkaku-ji, the golden temple. We then have some Kyoto-style ramen before headed out to Fushimi Inari Taisha which was also quite busy. We were too late for Kiyomizu-dera but we do finish the night off with some great eats.

There might be people who are going to Tokyo but don’t have the time or money to go all the way down to Kyoto. Well, here’s a spot just for you here in Tokyo.
There is a shine in Tokyo that gives you the same mysterious atmosphere as Fushimi Inari Taisha without visiting Kyoto. It is called Hanazonoinari Shrine inside Ueno Park

Kinkaku-ji The Golden Pavilion. The art of zen
Kinkaku-i,i the Golden Pavilion in Tokyo,a is a zen temple built and rebuilt over the centuries. The top floors are covered in gold leaf and shine in all weathers. The Temple is surrounded by landscaped gardens and hills. The perfection of Japanese gardens is not achieved without constant maintenance. Rain or shine, the work goes on. And if it means wading in the pond, so be it.
