EPISODE 4- SEASON 3
This our next stop in California- the beautiful and lushly green, Napa Valley. To say it is wine drinker’s paradise is an understatement. We tried so many various kinds of wines it was ridiculous….from samples that start at $200 to Jenn’s poor palate favorites- $10 wines. In this video we visit some of the famous and you get a chance to again spend time with our friends The Lindstrom’s, whop know far more about wine than we do. Needless to say, the research was grueling, but we had to have the experience. Aside from the wine itself, the beautiful hills covered in miles of vineyards was full of breathtaking views and vivid summer colors.
Next up we are headed to the San Francisco for the 2019 Pride Parade.
PLEASE take a minute to give us a thumbs up if you liked our video- we'd super appreciate if you shared the view with friends. We would love to have you subscribe and follow us on our Empty Nest Nomad Adventures. WE encourage feedback and any insight you have..this is about us learning and sharing.
Napa residents come home to rubble, devastation
(16 Oct 2017) With the winds dying down, fire officials said Sunday they have apparently turned a corner against the wildfires that have devastated California wine country and other parts of the state over the past week.
Thousands of people received the all-clear to return home.
While the danger from the deadliest, most destructive cluster of blazes in California history was far from over, the smoky skies started to clear in some places.
People were being allowed to return home in areas no longer in harm's way, and the number of those under evacuation orders was down to 75-thousand from nearly 100-thousand the day before.
Cristina Schott, 68, walked through the charred remains of her multi-storey house near Silverado Country Club for the first time in a week. She heaved painful sighs looking at destroyed tile, appliances and little more than a cinder block frame of what was once her home.
Down the road, Jack Daniels chuckled grimly looking at his wife's burned-out BMW. Daniels sifted through the ashes of his house with his grandchildren.
Daniels, a liquor and wine distributor, said he amassed an impressive collection of rare wines and spirits - which he said were mostly destroyed.
Fire crews have gained ground because the winds that had fanned the flames did not pick up overnight as much as feared.
The blazes were blamed for at least 40 deaths and destroyed some 5,700 homes and other structures. The death toll could climb as searchers dig through the ruins for people listed as missing. Hundreds were unaccounted for, though authorities said many of them are probably safe but have not let anyone yet know.

Napa, California
The city of Napa is the county seat of Napa County, California, United States. It is the principal city of the Napa County Metropolitan Statistical Area, which encompasses Napa County. As of the 2010 census, the city had a total population of 80,011. Napa was incorporated as a city in 1872.
Early history
The name Napa was probably derived from the name given to a southern Nappan village whose native people shared the area with elk, deer, grizzlies and cougars for many centuries, according to Napa historian Kami Santiago. At the time of the first recorded exploration into Napa Valley in 1823, the majority of the inhabitants consisted of Native American Indians. Padre José Altimira, founder of Mission San Francisco Solano in Sonoma, led the expedition. Spanish priests converted some natives; the rest were attacked and dispersed by Spanish soldiers. American farmers began arriving in the 1830s.
Before California was granted statehood in 1849, the Napa Valley was in the Territory of California's District of Sonoma. In 1850 when counties were first organized, Napa became one of the original counties of California. At the time, its boundaries also included Lake County to the north. By this time, the indigenous people were either working as field laborers or living in small bands in the hills surrounding the valley. Tensions between the white settlers and Native Americans broke into war in 1850, with a white man's death resulting in soldiers hunting down and killing all the natives they could find, driving the remainder north toward Clear Lake. In 1851, the first courthouse was erected. By 1870, the Native American population consisted of only a few laborers and servants working for the white settlers.
NAPA VALLEY - CALIFORNIA
In prehistoric times, the valley was inhabited by the Patwin Native Americans, with possible habitation by Wappo tribes in the northwestern foothills. Most villages are thought to have been constructed near the floodplains of watercourses that drain the valley. Their food consisted of wild roots, acorns, small animals, earthworms, grasshoppers, and bread made from crushed California buckeye kernels. In winter they would construct huts made of tree branches. In summer they camped near rivers and streams. In winter months, they were half clad in wild animal skins and at other times they wore no clothing. The maximum prehistoric population is thought not to have exceeded 5000 persons.
In 1776, a fort was erected by the Spanish Governor, Felipe de Neve a short distance northwest of Napa, on an elevated plateau. Russians from Sonoma County's Fort Ross grazed cattle and sheep in the Napa Valley in the early 19th century and in 1841 a survey party from the fort placed a plaque on the summit of Mount Saint Helena.
Francis Castro and Father Jose Altimura were the first Europeans to explore the Napa Valley in 1823.[6] When the first white settlers arrived in the early 1830s, there were six tribes in the valley speaking different dialects and they were often at war with each other. The Mayacomos tribe lived in the area where Calistoga was founded. The Callajomans were in the area near where the town of St. Helena now stands. Further south, the Kymus dwelt in the middle part of the valley. The Napa and Ulcus tribes occupied part of the area where the City of Napa now exists while the Soscol tribe occupied the portion that now makes up the southern end of the valley. Many of the native peoples died during a smallpox epidemic in 1838. Settlers also killed several over claims of cattle theft.

18th August 2015 - Golf and other Shenannigans in Napa valley
We drop off the girls to the Napa Valley Wine Train while we pay golf at the Napa Golf Club. Not a bad little public course, not too much trouble off the fairways, greens were slow but nice to pitch onto. We also found a gourmet food place where we picked up a very expensive leg of lamb and also had a drink at the local on the way home. Another great day in the USA!

Wildfires whipped by powerful winds swept through California wine country Monday, killing at least 10 people, destroying 1,500 homes and businesses and sending thousands fleeing as flames raged unchecked through high-end resorts, grocery stores and tree-lined neighborhoods.
As he fled through the ember-strewn streets of his neighborhood in Santa Rosa, Jeff Okrepkie knew it was probably the last time he would see his home of the past five years standing.
His worst fears were confirmed Monday morning, when a friend sent him a photo of what was left: a smoldering heap of burnt metal and debris.
We live in the valley, where it's concrete and strip malls and hotels and supermarkets, Okrepkie said. The last thing you think is a forest fire is going to come and wipe us out.
At least 10 people died and two were seriously injured in the blazes that started on Sunday, fire officials said.
The flames were burning at explosive rates because of 50 mph winds, said Ken Pimlott, director of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.
Fourteen large fires were burning, spread over a 200-mile region north of San Francisco from Napa in the south to Redding in the north. Gov. Jerry Brown declared a state of emergency in Napa, Sonoma and Yuba counties.
It was unusual to have so many fires take off at the same time, fire officials said, though October has generally been the most destructive time of year for California wildfires.
The ferocity of the flames forced authorities to focus primarily on getting people out safely, even if it meant abandoning structures to the fire. The fire area covered more than 100 square miles (160 square kilometers) over eight counties.
Elsewhere in the state, a fire churning through canyons in hilly neighborhoods of Orange County burned multiple homes and forced residents of about 1,000 homes to evacuate.
Some of the largest blazes were in Napa and Sonoma counties, home to dozens of wineries that attract tourists from around the world. They sent smoke as far south as San Francisco, about 60 miles (96 kilometers) away. What caused the blazes was not known.
Fires also burned in Yuba, Butte and Nevada counties — all north of the state capital.
The inferno blackened miles along one of the main gateways into wine country, State Highway 12 into Sonoma County. Wooden fence posts and guard rails burned fiercely. Thick smoke roiled from one winery, JR Cohn.
The fires also damaged the Silverado Resort in Napa and a Hilton hotel in Santa Rosa, the largest city in the fire area, with a population of about 175,000.
Kim Hoe, a 33-year-old tech worker from Penang, Malaysia, was staying at the Hilton Sonoma Wine Country, which was gutted by flames. He said the power went out around 1 a.m., and he and his colleagues started packing up when someone knocked on the door and told them to run.
We just had to run and run. It was full of smoke. We could barely breathe. It was dangerous, Hoe said.
They returned in the morning to find the hotel had been destroyed along with most
