Sitka Arts & Science Festival
Sitka Arts & Science Festival is a retreat tucked in the mountains of southeast Alaska that explores place, craft, and our relationship to the natural world. The festival brings together artists, scientists, and community members to explore and create on our beautiful island. We offer week-long workshops with our wonderful faculty that includes papercut artist Nikki McClure, writer and blogger Molly Wizenberg, Tlingit weaver and designer Teri Rofkar, traditional fish skin sewer Audrey Armstrong, and more! The festival is a collaboration between Sitka Fine Arts Camp, Sitka Sound Science Center, Sheldon Jackson Museum, and the Island Institute. Session I run from July 16-23rd and Session II runs from July 23rd-30th. Scholarships are available. Sitka, Alaska: Reconciling Past and Present
The town of Sitka is nestled in a small corner of Baranof Island in southeastern Alaska. Fishing has sustained generations dating back 10,000 years, when the native Tlingit people first called this land home. In the early 19th century Russian fur trappers temporarily drove the Tlingit out, making Sitka the capital of Russian Alaska. The Tlingit returned but were soon joined by American loggers and fisherman, and in 1867 the United States bought Alaska from Russia. For native Alaskans, colonization, stolen land, forced attendance at white boarding schools, the suppression of language, and state violence and injustices resulted in generational and historical trauma, contributing to a range of health issues for tribal members.
Today Sitka’s 8,600 residents comprise Native and non-native Alaskans, including whites and Filipinos. Fishing remains a key industry, along with tourism, as visitors come from around the world to experience the island’s natural beauty. But old wounds run deep, and a key part of modern Sitka’s path to a Culture of Health has been to address the historic trauma of its Native residents.

Cleaning up tsunami debris in Alaska
Ocean Conservancy Arctic Program Director Andrew Hartsig participated in a series of beach cleanups in the coastal town of Sitka, Alaska. Marine debris, including tsunami debris, is a big problem, even in remote places like the coast of Alaska. Debris can injure people, entangle marine mammals, enter the food web and threaten the overall ecosystem. Removing debris from beaches reduces these threats and promotes ecosystem resilience.
Marine Conservation Alliance Foundation and Sitka Sound Science Center were the driving forces behind organizing those cleanups, while Holland America Line provided the volunteers and Allen Marine provided the boat transportation and staff support to and from the cleanup site.
Undergraduate Research: WhaleFest Alaska Science Symposium
At Sitka WhaleFest science symposium and festival, university students experience career inspiration and renewed motivation for STEM coursework at a critical juncture in their college careers.
Sitka WhaleFest is a 3-day annual marine science symposium and festival in Sitka, Alaska. Students attend engaging lectures and meet with presenting scientists in small group discussions. Everyone participates in marine cruises and wildlife and cultural workshops, art and music events, a film festival, receptions, and a banquet.
In preparation, undergraduate students take a fall semester course reading and discussing work published by Sitka WhaleFest speakers in advance of traveling to Sitka WhaleFest. (At the University of Alaska Southeast, this course is BIOL 375: Current Topics: Discussions in Marine Mammalogy) Lower-division undergraduates are matched with upper-division undergraduate peer mentors during the event.

Lineage: Tlingit Artists Across Generations shines a light on Tlingit masters, their apprentices and their descendants. It is a story of legacy, and of how generations renew the spirit and form of their ancestral visual culture with every chip carved, fiber woven, bead sewn, and step danced. This is a story of cultural awareness and resurgence, all told through the perspectives of the Indigenous artists, illuminating cultural lifeways and ways of being and knowing that have fostered an artform that has long fascinated and beguiled viewers across the world.
The film follows three lineages of artists: Jennie Thlunaut and her apprentice, the late Clarissa Rizal, who taught many including Ricky Tagaban and Lily Hope; the descendants of George Benson, including Nick and Jerrod Galanin; and the Marks family, including masters Willie and Emma Marks and their children, such as Paul Marks and Nora Dauenhauer who is the caretaker of many of the family's treasures and is a renowned poet, scholar and cultue bearer.

Our Alaskan Cruise 2014 on Holland America's Amsterdam
This is the story of our family’s first adventure to Alaska, on Holland America’s cruise ship, the Amsterdam. On our way we would make a stop in Oregon for Trevor’s graduation, and pick up Nana, who would be our fellow-adventurer. We saw great sights on our Alaskan adventure: blue-ice glaciers, breeching whales, swooping bald eagles, monstrous crabs, beautiful mountains, great food, and great fun.
Our ports of call included Seattle, Juneau, Sitka, Ketchikan and Victoria, British Columbia. Shore excursions included the Mt. Roberts Tramway, humpback whale-watching off Lincoln Island, lunch at Orca Point Lodge on Colt Island, and a visit to the Mendenhall Glacier in Juneau; the Sitka Sound Science Center and a concert at Harrigan Centennial Hall in Sitka; the Bering Sea Crab Fishermen's Tour and Creek Street in Ketchikan; High Tea at the Fairmont Empress Hotel in Victoria, British Columbia.

With a shortage of knowledgeable radiology technicians in some areas of the country, many hospitals have resorted to hiring outsiders to perform complicated radiology work. Traveling radiology techs are employed by an agency, which puts them in connection with hospitals all over the country that need assistance. The tech then travels to the hospital and stays on tenure for an average of three months. They perform all radiology tasks such as X-rays and sonograms, and sometimes even help the staff with other duties if such help is needed.
If this sounds interesting, you may be wondering what you need to do to land a traveling radiology job. The truth is, there is a major demand for people like you in the medical field right now, and it's easier than ever to find and land a traveling radiology job. You just need to know where to look. The information below should help put you on the right track.
Basic Requirements
The requirements for traveling radiology jobs don't differ much from those of a typical radiology career. You do need a two or four year degree in radiology, as well as a medical school background. The type of training you'll require depends on what type of radiology you want to do. Also keep in mind that radiology licensing requirements vary by state, and a traveling radiologist must be fully licensed in order to perform their duties.
Beyond such basic training, a traveling radiologist must be willing to be away from home for months at a time. You must be an independent worker who can handle various situations with skill, and use applied knowledge to get you through new and unfamiliar territory.
Finding a job
For those interested in traveling radiology jobs, there are several resources available. The best place to start your search is on the Internet. You're likely to find all kinds of websites offering job postings and information on agencies; narrow your search down to those agencies that operate in your area.
Even if you don't find any job listings at agencies in your hometown, feel free to contact them and inquire whether or not they're hiring. Use the phone book to locate radiology centers and training offices in your city, as they will most likely be able to connect you with any agencies that handle traveling radiology jobs.
Finally, don't feel as though you must accept a job from the first agency that offers you one. Keep in mind that where you travel will have a significant impact on how your job advances and what kind of experience you'll have. The ideal radiology agency will work with you to find the ideal locations and opportunities to ensure that you are satisfied.
