On this episode of the show we take you back to Haleakala National Park and go for a hike into the crater. We spend the day hiking sliding sands trail which is known by many as one of the best hikes on Maui. If you want to find more of the best hikes on Maui's check out our Maui hiking playlist on our channel. Make sure to subscribe to continue following our Maui travel as we spend the next several months experiencing what it’s like to live, work and explore one of the most beautiful places in all of America.
The Detourist Guide To Travel is a long term travel show for the anti-tourist. We’re into experiencing what it’s really like to live, work and enjoy a destination like the locals do, not the people who visit. So, for the past several years we’ve left our home in the Northwest (Tacoma, WA) and lived somewhere new in the world from Vietnam all the way to Spain. What makes us different than the other 100 billion travel vloggers, digital nomads and backpackers on Youtube? We avoid the tourist track. No hostels or resorts. No tour guides or guide books. No souvenirs or travel clothes. We buy vehicles & groceries. We get apartments & jobs. We go slow & take our time, because if a place is worth going, it’s worth staying for a while.

The best hike in Haleakala National Park
Starting at the Haleakala visitors center - this hike takes you from thought the Summit District at the Sliding Sands trail all the way to Paliku cabin and campsite. Then a return on the Halemauu Trail to the Halemauu Trailhead. Over 20 miles in this special place which vibrates with stories of ancient and modern Hawaiian culture and protects the bond between the land and its people. The park also cares for endangered species, some of which exist nowhere else.
Hiking Up Out of the Crater on Sliding Sands Trail in Haleakala National Park, Maui, Hawaii (Part 1)
I’m on the crater floor in Haleakala National Park, Maui Island, Hawaii. Spent the last 20 minutes or so taking a mini-nap and hydrating. Now it’s time for the home stretch – Sliding Sands Trail – 3.9 miles uphill (2,300 vertical feet to the summit visitor center).
4:34 p.m.: Elevation 8,000 feet. I’ve made it back to the altitude I started at 6½ hours ago when I began my hike at Halemauu Trailhead. I’ve come up about 600 vertical feet from the junction down in the valley. That’s the good news. Bad news is I still have 1,700 feet of ascent remaining. Lucked out having perfect weather all day long.
4:46 p.m.: Here’s a silversword plant in full blossom. I did not expect to see that. What a treat.
Now coming up on a silversword city. Second one in bloom I’ve come across in the last 10 minutes. Fantastic!
5:04 p.m.: Just about an hour into my ascent on the Sliding Sands Trail. Made it to another large patch of silversword plants. Here’s another two in full bloom close to each other. One is as tall as my nipples and is sprouting purple flowers.
Close to 8,500 on the gradual ascent, the view from here looking back down at the crater is just sick.
Recorded at 4:06 p.m. July 19, 2018, on Maui Island

This is the Pacific Ocean viewed from the Kuloa Point Trail in Haleakala National Park on the south coast of Maui in Hawaii in January 2013. This is also known as the Kipahulu area of the park. This is where the 7 Sacred Pools of Oheo Gulch meet the Pacific.
Maui, Hawaii - Haleakala National Park (Hawaii Travel Vlog 6)
Part 6 of the Hawaii series of videos. This video covers day 7 of the adventure.
Watch Part 5:
On day 7 of our Hawaiian adventure we drove down to the Kipahulu District of the Haleakala National Park. They have quite a few great hikes to go on, especially the Pipiwai Trail, which brings you to the incredible Waimoku Falls. The hike is especially beautiful because it brings you through a Bamboo Forest and then through a rain forest!
After that long (but not too difficult) hike we did some of the nice easier hikes around the visitor center that bring you around the coastline and give you a chance to see a couple of smaller waterfalls.
After the hiking for a while we went back towards the Hana area and ate at Huli Huli Chicken, which had some of the best chicken I have ever had (not exaggerating)!
Finally we finished the day chilling at a couple of the beaches in the area (Hamoa Beach and Waianapanapa Black Sand Beach), which felt great after hiking!

Haleakalā Crater Hike Maui Hawaii - an exercise in sensory deprivation?
Haleakalā Crater Hike Maui Hawaii - from Keonehe’ehe’e (Sliding Sands) Trailhead to the Halemau’u Trailhead (January 4, 2016)
Haleakalā is an upside down hike - at the end of the day you have to climb up and out!!! This can be testing - read on ...
My love affair hiking through volcanic wonderlands continued this month.
What a great start to 2016 with an interstellar upside down day hike on Hawaii’s massive shield volcano Haleakalā (House of the Sun). It had us at hello five years ago when we completed a half-day hike to the dramatic Ka Lu'u o ka O'o (Digging Stick Pit) Cinder Cone. Ever since I have been itching to revisit the Park, and spend longer investigating her unique geology. As soon as we arrived in Maui I began counting the days before we would visit. The beaches are great, but hey I’m a mountain girl, so this rates higher.
Haleakalā s a magical other-worldly place, worthy of lots of excessive gushing. Jack London ( “Call of The Wild”) agreed, eloquently describing this geological wonderland as “a workshop of nature still cluttered with the raw beginnings of world-making” and “Saw-toothed waves of lava vexed the surface of this weird ocean.” Haleakalā had him at hello too! The Smithsonianmag.com describes entering Haleakalā ‘crater’ like an exercise in sensory deprivation.
This visit we tossed up between an overnight hike down the volcano vs. a day hike in and out of the ‘crater’ (not really a crater – see Haleakalā Interesting Facts in my February blog). Fully booked huts, and a lack of obvious transport at the bottom, decided for us.
So, we settled on the Keonehe’ehe’e (Sliding Sands) Trail. Kathy Morey’s excellent book “Maui Trails, Walks, Strolls and Treks on the Valley Isle” rated this strenuous 7 – 8 hour 11.2 mile / 18.10 km (plus detours) day hike as the “single finest day hike on Maui” and she is spot on. Hawaii-guide.com also highly recommended the hike. They warned it wasn’t an easy hike and that the “extremely strenuous trail descends 2,800 feet in the first 4 miles to the valley floor”. Do bees buzz? - how could we resist!
We started from the Keonehe’ehe’e (Sliding Sands) Trailhead (9,740 ft. / 2,969 m) and finished at the Halemau’u Trailhead (7,990 ft. / 2,436 m). Most day hikes have an up in the morning and down in the afternoon. Our upside down / reverse hike had the up in the afternoon so we sensibly selected the direction with the shortest climb out. Walking up on the sandy Keonehe’ehe’e (Sliding Sands) trail is far more strenuous than a regular rocky path.
Take plenty of water (double what you think you may need) and take it slow going back because the air is thinner at this altitude. The National Park advise you double the time it takes to get down to get back up. This is sound advice. This is one trail not to rush up! especially since you have driven straight up to over 10,000ft without acclimitization - altitude sickness happens regularly here. I have seen fit 20 year olds affected doing the shorter half-day hike to the dramatic Ka Lu'u o ka O'o (Digging Stick Pit) Cinder Cone and experienced it myself on this hike!
Maui’s Eastern shield volcano has great prominence at 3,055 m /10,023 feet, and is so massive she forms 75% of the Hawaiian island of Maui. Haleakalā’s charms must be discovered. It is discombobulating to think of Maui as a significant hiking destination since Maui is famous for fabulous beaches. But, for those of us in the know, Haleakalā is hiking nirvana. Many experienced hikers rate it up there with their best-ever scenic day hikes. I thoroughly agree ☺.

Hike to Swim under Waterfalls at Seven Sacred Pools in Maui! Maui Haleakala National Park
The trail to Seven Sacred Pools (Oheo Gulch) in Maui, Hawaii is half a mile long and fairly easy walk to the lower pools and waterfalls in Haleakala National Park. This is part 2 to last week so that I could show the trail leading to the lower pools from last weeks' video.
See last weeks video for more video on the Seven Sacred Pools.

Great Haleakala Crater thru Hike - Sliding Sands trail to Halemau'u
Awesome thru hike on the island of Maui with friends. Hiked from the summit of Haleakala into Haleakala Crater down the Sliding Sands Trail to the Halemau'u Trail. Encounters with beautiful rolling clouds, Silverswords, horses, Chukars, and a Nene, Hawaiian Goose, even tried its best to eat the camera.
Haleakala Crater - Full Day Volcano Hike GoPro Maui Hawaii
Maui - Hawaii 2014. Haleakala National Park. Full day hiking into the crater. We started at 9 am at Hosmer Grove parking lot. Hitchhiking to Haleakala Visitor Center and climbing to Pa Ka'oao overlook where journey began. It was freezing weather at the top. Expected 34 F. As we walked down temperature rise to lower 40 with sun worming the air. Ideal for hiking out there. It took us 8 hours and 15 min. to walk back to the car. Elevation changed few times and toughest and coolest part of this hike was a steep Halemau'u Trailhead with fast 1000 feet elevation change, narrow trail and really nice views of the crater. Approximately 15 miles hike and over 3000 feet elevation change. All recorded with GoPro Hero 3 Black Edition. Time-lapse made with 800 pictures.

WE ALMOST DIED IN HANA - Pipiwai Trail to Waimoku Falls, Haleakala National Park
In November, 2017, Ben and Julia went for a hike on the Pipiwai Trail to see Waimoku Falls in the Haleakala National Park in Hana and were almost hit by a rock that fell from the falls. In this video, we show you the beauty of the Pipiwai Trail and Haimoku Falls, as well as the dangers of crossing the warning signs. Although we didn't catch the rock falling on video, you can hear it smash down and hear our freak out.
We got lucky and are thankful to be alive. Please learn from our mistake. We had visited the falls before when the water wasn't as strong and you were allowed to cross the boundary and even stand under the waterfall, but things have changed. Don't do it! You might not make it out alive.

27 June 2011 hiking the Sliding Sands Trail on Haleakala on Maui. We hiked the 5 miles round trip to and around the Ka Lu`u o ka `O`o Crater.
