Bicycle Touring USA Day 12 | MEXICO
Me and The College Picker are currently riding our bicycles across America, and we are documenting our interesting journey by vlogging every day. The first 10 or so videos are quite poor quality as my camera was suffering difficulty with audio and visual due to use. However I later purchased a new camera, so the vlogs get way better. But I hope you enjoy our adventure.

SOUTHERN TIER BIKE ROUTE - The Best Winter Cycling Route in the United States
”What is the best place to go bicycle touring in the United States during the winter?”
Southern Tier ►
Winter Cycling ►
That’s a good question, because for much of the United States, winter means cold weather, rain, ice and even snow. And while it’s possible to go bicycle touring in cold weather winter conditions, riding through the snow is probably not what George is asking about.
What I assume George is asking, is, where in the United States is it best to conduct a long-distance bicycle tour… in warm or relatively warm weather.
The answer is, there is probably no other long-distance bike touring route more popular for winter cycling than the Adventure Cycling Association’s Southern Tier bike route, which traverses more than 3,000 miles across the southern portion of the United States from San Diego, California is the west - to St. Augustine, Florida in the east.
If you were to start in California, you’d pedal east away from San Diego and quickly find yourself riding through dry, sparsely populated deserts where every town will be a welcome sight. Texas dominates the Southern Tier bike route, taking up an entire third of the mileage. Louisiana is like no other state in the United States due to its history, language, culture, and food. Mississippi offers great rural riding all the way into Alabama, where the route crosses a bridge over to and island. From there it's a ferry ride across the bay to Gulf Shores and some of the whitest beaches in the world. Then finally, the route finishes in scenic Florida.
Because of it’s location in the southern part of the country, The Southern Tier Bicycle Route is the most popular long-distance bike route in the United States… and it’s also the shortest cross-country bicycle route in the nation. But ever if you decide to travel this famous bike tour during the winter months, you need to be prepared for both hot and cool weather. Temperatures can be extreme during the day, and drop down to sub-freezing temperatures at night. So you need to be prepared for a little bit of everything.

WHY I'M BIKING 3,500 MILES TO NEW YORK CITY
VISIT:
My name is Pablo. I’m a freshman college student, filmmaker, and life explorer. This summer I am taking a chance. I’m going on a bike trip from San Francisco to New York. See, I was raised in Mexico City to a chorus of Spanish, Mixtec, and traffic music. My family is Mexican: 35 of my cousins, 18 of my uncles, 2 of my parents, and 1 of my brother. But I consider myself a citizen of the world.
I want to make a trip across the United States for three things: (1) understand myself, (2) understand a society that’s supposed to hold prejudice against me, and (3) capture all of it in a feature-length documentary that pushes the boundaries of film. I approach art as a healing process, both for myself and the people around me. We live in our social bubbles, our “comfort zones.” And art has a way to pop them. Here's what I've done so far:
It’s a story focused on how a young Mexican travels from comfort to understanding in hope that the rest of society follows. Up until I was a teenager I didn’t know that a person could be gay. My parents never told me and the Mexican culture did its best to hide this aspect of life. So I learned about myself through a random TV show that I happened to flick through in the TV.
I hope my documentary does the same thing for others: encourage understanding of the self-rooted in acknowledgment of the Other. Because I tell a story that’s bigger than a journey from San Fransisco to New York. It’s a story focused on how a young Mexican travels from comfort to understanding in hope that the rest of society follows.

Couple rides bike across entire US-Mexico border for immigration reform
For five long and educational months a couple from New York and Minnesota have been on a quest to learn about border realities.
They aren't doing all of this by just watching TV or reading a book.
They're biking and blogging every minute of their exploration
Each part of the border has it's distinct reality, said Eric Wright.
We knew that and we were interested in what was going on in each part of the border.
And we felt an obligation to teach as we go, said Katy Brandes.
After spending significant time working as volunteers at a shelter for migrants in El Paso, Katy and Eric decided to explore the border.
In September, they got on their bikes and started pedaling a little north of San Diego, California, final destination Boca Chica, Texas.
Their trip has taken them all along the US-Mexico border hoping to get a glimpse of a migrants life.
I think people in the north don't really understand what's going on in the southern borders, said Katy. Hearing politicians talk about a wall might sound feasible to people.
But when you come down and you witness it, it seems kind of crazy the division between cities and the fact that it's 2000 miles long.
During their travels, Katy and Eric have visited social justice organizations and border groups.
They've talked to day laborers and have stayed at various shelters for immigrants on both sides of the border.
But what Katy and Eric consider a priority of their more than 2000 mile journey, is to hopefully one day change America's immigration policies.
I mean we would really go radical and want open borders, said Katy. But we know that it has to be done step by step.
So we can just hope that the Dream Act will happen and maybe and amnesty will happen and maybe more Mexican asylum cases will be looked at seriously as people flee the violence.
The couple says our country was built on immigrants and people shouldn't fear them.
The craziest thing about how our immigration system works or rather doesn't work is that it's separating thousands of families, says Eric.
Thousands of children are being left without their parents. Spouses being separated.
Kids who've spent their entire lives living in the United States who were brought over when they were toddlers are being deported.
There's a lot of inconsistency and a lot of things being done by our immigration system that leaves a lot of heartache behind.
As they pedal and take their two fully loaded bikes for the longest spin of their lives, they're looking even further down the road at how this trip could impact others.

XDV Dash Across America (3,004 Miles Bike Ride in 21 Days)
Recently, we had the opportunity to collaborate and work with XDV (XeDapViet.org), a cycling club that is headquartered in the San Jose/Bay Area, CA. We were able to get the shoot completed and filmed everything before the sun went down. The mission of XDV is to promote safe bicycling for social recreation, improved health and wellness, sustainable transportation, sports and fun.
This month, some of the riders will be going on one of the biggest journeys of their life and they need all the support they can get.
About the Journey:
Dash Across America is a 3,004 mile coast-to-coast bicycle ride to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Vietnamese American journey to freedom and to pay tribute to those heroes who valiantly fight and give their lives to preserve freedom.
In 1975, the first wave of Vietnamese people immigrated to the United States of America seeking freedom from communism – our journey to freedom. Now 40 years later, they are using their freedom to fight for the freedom of others.
There are 30 million people who are victims of human trafficking all across our world––more than any other point in human history. Not only is this unimaginable, but it is unjust. Therefore, they have partnered with the Coalition to Abolish Modern-day Slavery in Asia (CAMSA), an international anti-human trafficking initiative founded by Boat People SOS (BPSOS). And together, they are fighting to abolish modern day slavery in the 21st century.
This Memorial Day, May 25th 2015, they will be bicycling from Oceanside, California all the way to the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. to participate in the special 40th anniversary event, “Our Journey to Freedom,” at the Kennedy Center, see
This is the extent they are willing to go for freedom.
What extent will you go?

Feds arrest dozens of foreigners in pedicab raids
San Diego — Nearly 40 foreigners living in San Diego on student visas were taken into custody Thursday morning on accusations of illegally working as pedicab drivers, federal immigration officials said.
The raids, which targeted apartments in the East Village, Pacific Beach and East County, are part of an ongoing investigation into the illegal use of foreigners in pedicab operations.
Agents with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement made initial sweeps in August, arresting 24 Turkish nationals who were here on exchange visitor work visas. All of the arrests have been on administrative — not criminal — immigration violations.
The latest raids involved people primarily in their 20s from Eastern Europe, Russia, Brazil and Turkey, said ICE spokeswoman Lauren Mack. They will be interviewed, then released on orders to leave the United States within 30 days, Mack said. Their visas will also be revoked by the State Department.
Federal law bars foreign visitors from working as pedicab drivers, even with the proper work visas. The law was enacted following a high-profile pedicab crash that left a woman with fatal injuries in downtown San Diego in 2009.
The investigation, led by ICE’s national security unit in San Diego, has exposed what agents suspect is a criminal ring that recruits college-age foreigners as cheap labor for downtown’s pedicab industry.
In many cases, agents discovered the foreigners had lied on their visa applications and supplied false Social Security numbers to the city to get permitted as drivers, Mack said.
