There stands Francois Dupleix. Not too far away is Joan of Arc. It’s a trip down France as one crosses symmetrically aligned streets in Puducherry.
The Portuguese have been here. So have the Dutch, The Danes, The English And the French.
By 18th century this tiny fishing village had turned into a grand port city. The French first set foot here in 1670 and left a part of them when their undisturbed rule finished in 1954. Not much has changed since. The history has become punctuated. The air filled with nostalgia and the present is living up to a heritage that speaks so much. A trip to Puducherry is like a journey in time with a vibrant present celebrating its interesting past. “History goes back to the Roman times, but factually started with the arrival of the French in 1963, who founded the town and built it in its present form, during the two and a half century they occupied it.”
“Puducherry” is the French interpretation of the original name “Puducheri” meaning “new settlement”. Many pilgrims have shared the town’s hospitality on their way to the temple town of Rameshwaram, thus enriching its culture.

The known history of Puducherry dates back to the beginning of our era. Puducherry also had a flourishing maritime history. Excavations at Arikamedu, about 7 kms to the south of the town, show that Romans came here to trade in the 1st Century AD.
The trade included dyed textiles, pottery and semi-precious stones. The findings are now displayed in the Puducherry Museum. Ancient Roman scripts mention one of the trade centres along the Indian coast as Poduca or Poduke, which refers, historians affirm, only to the present Puducherry.
Before this period nothing is known with certainty. The Bahur Plates, issued in the 8th century speak of a Sanskrit University which was here from an earlier period. Legend has it that the sage Agastya established his Ashram here and the place was known as Agastiswaram. An inscription found near the Vedhapuriswara Temple hints at the credibility of this legend.
History continues at the beginning of the fourth century A. D. when the Puducherry area is part of the Pallava Kingdom of Kanchipuram. During the next centuries Puducherry is occupied by different dynasties of the south: in the tenth century A.D.
The Cholas of Tanjavur took over, only to be replaced by the Pandya Kingdom in the thirteenth century. After a brief invasion by the Muslim rulers of the North, who established the Sultanate of Madurai, the Vijayanagar Empire took control of almost all the South of India and lasted till 1638, when the Sultan of Bijapur began to rule over Gingee.

Unlike the Arab merchants, who had been sailing the coasts of India since times immemorable, the impact of European contact had far reaching consequences in terms of establishments and in the end the occupation of the entire Subcontinent.
In 1497 the Portuguese discovered the route to India and began to expand their influence by occupying coastal areas and building harbour towns, which soon extended more than 12.000 miles of coast-line.
The Portuguese established a factory in Puducherry at the beginning of the sixteenth century, but were compelled to leave a century later by the ruler of Gingee, who found them unfriendly. After that the Danes shortly set up an establishment, and likewise the Dutch. The latter set up trading posts in Porto Novo and Cuddalore. The French, who had trading centres in the North, Mahe and Madras were invited to open a trading centre in Puducherry by the new ruler of Gingee to compete with the Dutch.
In 1673, February 4th, Bellanger, a French officer, took up residence in the Danish Lodge in Puducherry and the French Period of Puducherry began.In 1674 Francois Martin, the first Governor, started to build Puducherry and transformed it from a small fishing village into a flourishing port-town.
In 1693 the Dutch took over and fortified the town considerably. But four years later Holland and France signed a peace treaty and the French regained Puducherry in 1699. In the 18th century the town was laid out on a grid pattern and grew considerably.
Able Governors like Lenoir (1726-1735) and Dumas (1735-1741) and an ambitious Governor Dupleix (1742-1754) expanded the Puducherry area and made it a large and rich town.

The Ashram was set up in 1926 by Aurobindo Ghosh (Sri Aurobindo), one of India's greatest philosopher-poets, who originally came to Pondicherry to escape persecution by the British. It was after arriving in Puducherry, that he immersed in the spiritual realm and discovered the power of yoga. His philosophy was deeply rooted in yoga and his writings inspired a number of followers.

Sri Aurobindo Ashram in Puducherry
The Sri Aurobindo Ashram was founded by Sri Aurobindo on the 24 November 1926 (Siddhi Day). At the time there were no more than 24 disciples in the Ashram [1]. In December of that year, Sri Aurobindo decided to withdraw from public view, and appointed his co-worker Mirra Alfassa, thenceforth known as The Mother in charge of the ashram.
Today, the ashram is a large institution in the downtown area of Pondicherry. It provides many charitable benefits to the area, including free medical facilities and a publishing house. It also includes the School for Perfect Eyesight, a centre promoting the use of the controversial Bates method that claims to improve and restore vision without the use of glasses.

Pondicherry, now known as Puducherry, is the capital of the Indian Union Territory of Puducherry is a town tucked away on the Eastern seaboard of India. Puducherry is well connected by train, bus and air to all metros of India.
Auroville
Auroville (City of Dawn) is an experimental township which is situated 8 km north-west of Pondicherry in East Coast Road Bommayapalayam. It was founded in 1968 by Mirra Alfassa (also known as The Mother), the spiritual collaborator of Sri Aurobindo. The purpose of Auroville is to realize human unity. During the inauguration ceremony of Auroville on 28 February 1968, soil from 124 countries was placed in a lotus-shaped urn and mixed to symbolize universal oneness. The Government of India and UNESCO has endorsed the project.
Puducherry city
A French colony until 1954, this coastal town retains a number of colonial buildings, churches, statues, and systematic town planning, as well as urban architecture of the local Tamil style. As such the town has been dubbed The Europe of India.
Pondicherry Beach
Promenade Beach or, known as, Pondicherry Beach is the popular stretch of beachfront in the city of Puducherry, India, along the Bay of Bengal. It is a 1.2-kilometre-long stretch in Pondicherry, starts from War Memorial and end at Dupleix Park on the Goubert Avenue.

Gandhi Statue is a four-meter statue of Mahatma Gandhi is surrounded by eight granite pillars, which were supposedly brought from Gingee, a fort some 70 km from Pondicherry. Located across as an integral part of Pondicherry’s colonial past.

Aayi Mandapam (Park Monument) is a white monument built during the time of Napoleon III, Emperor of the France. It is situated in center of Bharathi park. The monument commemorates the provision of water to the French city during his reign. It was named after a lady courtesan called Ayi. She destroyed her own house to erect a water reservoir to supply water for the city.

Sri Manakula Vinayagar Temple
Sri Manakula Vinayagar Temple was in existence before the French came and settled in Pondicherry i.e. before 1666. It has a golden spire and walls portraying forty different forms of Ganesha. The temple also has a smaller shrine dedicated to Lord Murugan, who is Ganesha’s younger brother. Over 5000 devotees flock to this site everyday.
The city has many colonial buildings, churches, temples and statues which, combined with the systematic town planning and planned French style avenues, still preserve much of the colonial ambiance.

The Sri Aurobindo Ashram is a well known and wealthy ashram in India, with devotees from India and all over the world flocking to it for spiritual salvation. Its spiritual tenets represent a synthesis of yoga and modern science. The Ashram was founded in 1926 by Sri Aurobindo Ghose, an Indian freedom fighter, poet, philosopher, and yogi.
Mirra Alfassa (also known as ‘The Mother’) was one of Auribindos followers, who was born in Paris and was so inspired by his philosophy that she stayed on in Pondicherry.[4] After 24 November 1926, when Sri Aurobindo retired into seclusion, she founded his ashram (Sri Aurobindo Ashram), with a handful of disciples living around the Master. With Sri Aurobindo's full approval she became the leader of the community, a position she held until her death. The Sri Aurobindo Ashram Trust,which she had registered after Sri Aurobindo's death in 1950 continues to look after the institution. The idea of Auroville or the City of Dawn was conceived by ‘The Mother’.
It is open to the public daily between 8 a.m. and 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. Children below 3 years of age are not allowed into the ashram and photography is allowed only with permission of the ashram authorities. Some of the ashram’s facilities like the Library and the Main Building (during collective meditation) can be accessed, only after obtaining a gate pass from the Bureau Central or some of the Ashram Guest Houses.It is located on Rue De La Marine.

I am sharing my recent visit to Pondicherry
The Sri Aurobindo Ashram is a spiritual community (ashram) located in Pondicherry, in the Indian territory of Puducherry. The ashram grew out of a small community of disciples who had gathered around Sri Aurobindo after he retired from politics and settled in Pondicherry in 1910.

It was founded in 1968 by Mirra Alfassa (known as the Mother) and designed by architect Roger Anger.

The album “India And Her Future” is a compilation of spoken words, hymns and devotional songs based on the teachings of “The Mother” and performed by the artists of Sri Aurobindo Ashram, Pondicherry.
Mira Alfassa (21 February 1878 – 17 November 1973), known to her followers as “The Mother” was the spiritual collaborator of Sri Aurobindo. She co founded the Sri Aurobindo Ashram along with Sri Aurobindo in November 1926. Mira Alfassa was a French national born in Paris. She became a student of occultism from a very early age. She came to India and met Sri Aurobindo for the first time in 1914. At the first meeting she was clear that Sri Aurobindo was the person she had been in search of for all these years. The spiritual bonding was instantaneous. She had to go back to France because of World War, but she finally came back and settled in Pondicherry. The teachings and lectures of “The Mother” evoke philosophical thoughts for the same Divine transformation.
Sri Aurobindo is a legendary figure when it comes to Indian freedom struggle. Born as Aurobindo Ghosh he went to study Indian Civil Services at The King’s College, Cambridge, England. He was appointed for civil services under the Maharaja of the Princely State of Baroda. He started taking active participation in the Nationalist movement of India. Aurobindo was put behind the bars several times by the British raj for his writings and activities against the Raj. Aurobindo was one of the major propagators for the extremist wing under the congress. In 1908 Aurobindo was arrested for being connected with the Alipore Bomb Case. After a year of imprisonment he was released and after that he gradually moved over towards the path of spiritualism and finally settled down in Pondicherry. Sri Aurobindo developed a method of Spiritual practice called Internal Yoga. The process was based on the concept of transformation or evolution of human life into life divine.
This album “India And Her Future” is a splendid take on the interpretations of “The Mother” on Bharatbarsha and a New India. This is a compilation of various writings of “The Mother” narrated beautifully along with various hymns and Devotional Songs that were written by “The Mother” which depicts India in a new light. The spiritual take on a New India is refreshing. The artists of Sri Aurobindo Ashram did a marvelous job presenting these unique philosophical and spiritual thoughts with superb aesthetics.

Arulmigu Manakula Vinayagar Temple is a hindu temple dedicated to Lord Ganesha situated in Pondicherry city. It is one of must to visit place in pondicherry and this temple has so much cleanness. The elephant Laxmi who used to bless people by her trunk was not present there, i don't know why also there are lots of stalls to buy puja items and god's idol. next went to sri aurobind ashram which is just so close to manakula temple and dedicated to the spiritual aspirants Sri Aurobindo and mother Mira Alfassa. next near of it there are puducherry museum which is run by goverment and has lots of antique collection. so watch this video till end &

PM Modi arrives in Puducherry, visits Sri Aurobindo Ashram
Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Puducherry on his one-day visit. Puducherry Lt. Governor Kiran Bedi, Chief Minister V Narayanasamy and his cabinet colleagues welcomed PM Modi at the airport. The Prime Minister drove straight to the Sri Aurobindo Ashram, where he did a few minutes of meditation. He also had a brief interaction with the students of the Ashram. Later, he left for Auroville.

Auroville: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday visited Auroville (City of Dawn) International Township here after visiting the Sri Aurobindo Ashram in Puducherry.The Prime Minister after arriving in Puducherry from Chennai reached the Ashram where he was received by the officials. He paid floral tributes at the memorial of Sri Aurobindo and meditated for a while and later interacted with the children of the International School of Education run by the ashram.The Prime Minister upon his arrival in the City of Dawn visited Savitri Bhavan and paid his respects at the Matrimandir. Later, he addressed the gathering at the Sri Aurobindo Auditorium, Bharat Nivas. The Chairman of the Auroville Foundation, Karan Singh welcomed the Prime Minister and other officials on behalf of the Auroville City.Addressing the gathering on the occasion of Aurovilles 50th Anniversary, the Prime Minister said, it is a moment of joy and appreciation of Sri Aurobindos continuous vision of Indias spiritual leadership which inspires us even today and adds that Auroville is a manifestation of that vision which has over the years emerged as a hub for social, cultural, educational, economic and spiritual innovation.The Prime Minister also appreciated the Auroville Community for reflecting the dream and vision and also spoke about the Charter and principles The Mother has for Auroville. The Prime Minister in conclusion said, May Auroville continue to come up with ideas to empower the ordinary citizens of this country where people from far and wide bring with them new ideas. May Auroville become the centre where these ideas are synthesised. May Auroville serve as a beacon to the world, may it be the guardian which calls for breaking down narrow walls of the mind. Mirra Alfassa (later Mirra Morisset and Mirra Richard) (February 21, 1878 -- November 17, 1973), also known as The Mother, was the spiritual collaborator of Sri Aurobindo.
She came to Sri Aurobindo's retreat on March 29, 1914 in Pondicherry, India. Having to leave Pondicherry during World War I, she spent most of her time in Japan where she met the poet Rabindranath Tagore. Finally she returned to Pondicherry and settled there in 1920. After November 24, 1926, when Sri Aurobindo retired into seclusion, she founded his ashram (Sri Aurobindo Ashram), with a handful of disciples living around the Master. She became the leader of the community, a position she held until her death. The Trust she had registered after Sri Aurobindo's death in 1950 continues to look after the institution.
