Erie St Cemetery - Cleveland, OH, USA
The oldest existing cemetery in Cleveland, Erie St was founded in 1826 when land donated by Leonard Case (after whom Case Western Reserve is named) was quit-claimed to the city of Cleaveland [sic]. The city's first burial ground, Ontario St Cemetery, had become too small and was too centrally located to the growing city's population center. That cemetery was located near Ontario and Prospect St's, and there is no remaining evidence of its existence. Most of the graves from Ontario Cemetery were moved to Erie St.
Erie St is a unique and compelling cemetery, a bit of green and history in the midst of downtown Cleveland and in the shadow (across the street) of Jacob's Field, where the Cleveland Indians play.
Among the gravesites moved from Ontario St, the oldest readable stone we could find dated to 1808, although the earliest stone in the cemetery is reportedly to be from 1803. Many graves there date to the 1820's and 1830's. There are reported as many as 17,000 burials here, most unmarked, although we find that number suspiciously high for the size of the graveyard.
Still, it is absolutely an essential piece of Cleveland's history and just a terrific graveyard. Many stories of early settlers and a couple of Indian burials here.
Just one of many good online resources about this compelling cemetery:
Silver Crypt
The Silver Crypt. Quest Team Paranormal Investigations visits the Silver Crypt located at the Spring Hill Cemetery in Wellsville, Ohio.
Why is the crypt no longer part of the cemetery? Legend suggests it never was. The story tells of an evil doctor named David Silver. He was so evil that the people of Wellsville refused to bury him on hallowed ground. Instead he was laid to rest just outside of the cemetery grounds. As his punishment, he would have to watch others who were felt to be worthy buried in the light of God, while he would be forever refused. His family members suffered the same fate. There are five people buried in this crypt.

A Salute to all loving fathers.
Pastor Michael D. Savage is the thankful pastor of Porter's Grove M.B. Church in Humboldt, TN. He is the former pastor of Mount Olive Baptist Church in Waverly, TN.
A native of Jackson, Tennessee, Pastor Savage is the son of Herman and Gussie Savage. He is the father of three daughters and two sons. Normally as with any blessed grandparent, he boasts of four very active and loving grandchildren.
Pastor Savage comes from a family of rich heritage, rooted and grounded in the Lord. He grew up in Greater St. Luke Baptist Church in Jackson, Tennessee. He was a member of the children and youth choirs, the gospel choir, and the male chorus.
The old saying, from a tiny acorn grows a mighty oak holds true for Pastor Savage. His mother, Mrs. Gussie Savage, is a well-known vocalist and musician having hailed from the original Golden Sunlight Singers that also featured his aunt, Climmie Whitley and Nell Huntspon. His cousin George Hobson is also a well-known musician and vocalist. Pastor Savage, without a doubt, inherited the family's vocal qualities. He is widely known throughout the West Tennessee area for his musical talents. He has also participated in numerous gospel workshops and has been on stage and sang in choirs that have appeared with several widely known gospel singers including Douglas Miller, James Cleveland, and Orlanda Draper.

Popularity and widespread use. Song was said to be sang by both sides during the Civil War.In the years since the Civil War, The Battle Hymn of the Republic has been used frequently as an American patriotic song.
This song is usually heard at the national conventions of both the Republican Party and Democratic Party,[citation needed] and is often sung at Presidential inaugurations.[citation needed] Sang for Ronald Reagan's inauguration.
The song was notably played on September 14, 2001 at the Washington National Cathedral and at Saint Paul's Cathedral during memorial services for the victims of the September 11 attacks.
This was one of Sir Winston Churchill's favorite songs. At his request this song was played at his funeral in St. Paul's Cathedral in 1965.
Recordings and public performances
In 1960 the Mormon Tabernacle Choir won the Grammy Award for Best Performance by a Vocal Group or Chorus. The 45 rpm single record, which was arranged and edited by Columbia Records and Cleveland disk jockey Bill Randle, was an unlikely commercial success and reached #13 on Billboard's Hot 100 the previous autumn.
Judy Garland performed this song on her weekly television show in December 1963. She originally wanted to do a dedication show for JFK upon his assassination but CBS would not let her, so she performed the song without being able to mention his name.
Whitney Houston also sang this song at her concert to the troops called Welcome Home Heroes in 1991.
The lyrics of The Battle Hymn of the Republic appear in Martin Luther King, Jr.'s sermons and speeches, most notably in his speech How Long, Not Long from the steps of the Alabama State Capitol building on March 25, 1965 after the 3rd Selma March, and in his final sermon I've Been to the Mountaintop, delivered in Memphis, Tennessee on the evening of April 3, 1968, the night before his assassination. In fact, the latter sermon, King's last public words, ends with the first lyrics of the Battle Hymn, Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord.
The United States Army paratrooper song, Blood on the Risers, first sung in World War II, is set to the tune of The Battle Hymn of the Republic.
Queen's College Colours, written in 1898 by student Alfred Lavell to inspire the Queen's University football team to victory after a disappointing loss to the University of Toronto, is also set to the tune of The Battle Hymn of the Republic.
An American Trilogy is a song arranged by country songwriter Mickey Newbury and made popular by Elvis Presley. It is a medley of three 19th century songs—Dixie, a blackface minstrel song that became the unofficial anthem of the Confederacy since the Civil War; All My Trials, originally a Bahamian lullaby, but closely related to African-American spirituals, and well-known through folk music revivalists; and The Battle Hymn of the Republic, the marching song of the Union Army during the Civil War.
