Merryvale Vineyards - St. Helena, California
Merryvale Vineyards was the first winery built in Napa Valley following the repeal of Prohibition. Merryvale produces about 10,000 cases of wine a year, consisting of both Bordeaux, Burgundian and Rhone varietals such as Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Viognier, and Syrah. Their most notable and highly acclaimed wine is called Profile, a proprietary red blend using Bordeaux varietals.

Lynfred Winery
One More Bottle of Wine: Lynfred Winery 2004 Reserve Cabernet/Merlot Lynfred Winery in Roselle is celebrating its 30th anniversary. Since its 1979 inception, Lynfred has grown to become the largest winery in the state and is a major force in trying to keep Illinois a full reciprocity state in accordance with the Supreme Court's decision in Granholm v. Heald, although distributors aren't making it easy.
In Chilean-born Andres Basso, Lynfred also has a talented winemaker on staff. Basso's resume includes tours of duty at Concha y Toro, Washignton State's Gordon Brothers Family Vineyards, and Napa Valley's Merryvale Vineyards. Basso's wines tend to coat the palate with bright fruit and clean finishes, making them compatible as either a great food wine or for just wanting a glass around the house. That's how we came to the revelation of Lynfred's 2004 Reserve Cabernet/Merlot.

Roth Estate Wines
Last year we had the winemaker for Lancaster and Roth Winery in the store, Jesse Katz was in town for a tasting and both he along with his wines were both very impressive. As a boy traveling with his well known wine country photographer father, Andy, winemaker Jesse Katz was exposed at an early age to the most famous wine regions on earth. While his father was taking photographs and creating books in Burgundy or Tuscany, the seed was being planted. Later, as a young man working summers in the vineyards and winery lab while attending Fresno State University in California it wasn't long before Jesse had his Enology Degree with a minor in chemistry. After honing his craft in Napa and Argentina, Jesse was recruited from cult producer Screaming Eagle in 2010 and quickly established that he understood how to build on the tradition of excellence that has defined Lancaster Estate from the very first vintage. Working with legendary winemakers like Andy Ericson, Paul Hobbs, Hans Vinding-Diers and Robert Foley shortcuts the process of absorbing a lifetime of winemaking insights. Working in an array of climates and countries brings added depth. With dust on his boots, Jesse has quickly learned what the estate vineyards promise.
Maryhill's Winemaker Richard Batchelor
Meet Maryhill Winery's Winemaker Richard Batchelor. A native New Zealander, Richard joined Maryhill in 2009 after highly decorated stints with several Napa Valley wineries. His extensive knowledge of viticulture and ability to create full-flavored and complex wines has helped take Maryhill to the next level. Richard directs all production activities at the winery, including winemaking, bottling and harvest coordination.

The Hess Collection's Botrytis Affected Carneros Reserve 2006 Chardonnay
I interviewed senior wine educator Michael Jobes on Global #Chardonnay day at The Hess Collection winery in the Mount Veeder AVA of Napa Valley. Working our way through the portfolio, my jaw hit the ground upon opening this rare gem of noble rot. 2006 was the first and the last time that such a Chardonnay could be made, and in very small scale production at that. Thus it is only available at the winery, as if one needed any kind of extra reason to visit The Hess Collection.
Tasting the Hess Select Chardonnay with Winemaker Dave Guffy and Viticulurist Sander Sheer
Winemaker Dave Guffy and Viticulturist Sander Sheer of The Hess Collection Winery taste and talk about the Hess Select Monterery Chardonnay. It was a beautiful 65 degree January afternoon in Napa, so we decided to take a visit to our Mount Veeder vineyards. As you can see, with these panoramic views, we have it pretty good up here.
