ATATURK MAUSOLEUM ANITKABIR (HE NEVER DIED!!)
ATATURK MAUSOLEUM (ANITKABIR)
Anıtkabir or Ataturk Mausoleum is situated in the Ankara, which is the capital of Turkey and home to one of the country’s most significant masterpieces. This notable example of modern Turkish architecture was decorated by Turkish great architect Emin Onat and erected between 1944 and 1953.
WHO WAS MUSTAFA KEMAL ATATURK?
Being nationalist leader of Turkish people and founder, Atatürk is the first president of the republic of Turkey. He is not only important for Turks but also the other people from many different countries. When he died on 10th November 1938, his body moved to Etnography while Anıtkabir was building.
THE BUILDING STORY OF ANITKABIR
Ataturk did not say anything where he wanted to be buried before he died. However, while he was conversing with his friends, he stated that of course I will die someday. If I die, Çankaya (a province of Ankara) is very good location for my grave. Because of that, the Turkish people tried to fulfil his request in order to reflect their love and respect against him.
HISTORY
Once upon a time there were many Phrygian graves (the ruins of tumulus) belonging to B.C XII century in today’s Anıtkabir. Within those tombs includes valuable goods but later they were sent to the Archaeological Museum.
Its place was determined by Turkish deputy Mithat Aydın and the Turk committee of the period. Rasattepe with 906 altitudes was chosen for that famous Ataturk's tomb. Moreover, there was regulated an international competition by the same committee in 1941. Totally 47 countries with valuable projects such as Turkey, Germany, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, France, Czechoslovakia were participated in this contest.
At last the projects belonging to Professor Emin Onat and Associate Professor Orhan Arda were accepted. The construction of Anıtkabir was firstly begun in 1944 but later it was completed in 1953.
ARCHITECTURAL FEATURES
Anıtkabir consists of four separate sections;
In the First Section: It was made the adjustment of land level for the tomb. Additionally, the Reliance Wall was built on the lion road leaning down Ataturk’s mausoleum. It was completed in one year.
In the Second Part: It covers the area of tomb, ceremony and around buildings added later. Also the project of monument’s mass had been planned within that place. Entry towers and an important section of that fascinating organization were finished here. Surrogated by many various trees such as Acacias, Ash Threes, Elm, Honeysuckle, Silverberry and Tamarisk Trees, that location contains the water system which creates a ravishing atmosphere. It takes 5 years.
In the Third Place: The roads meeting the monument and Lion Road were finished in that space. The Parade (Ceremony) Ground and the tomb were furnished here. Moreover, the steps of stairs were made in that location.
The Last Section: It is the last grade of the building breath-taking Anıtkabir. Honour Hall and the vaults were built here. That part was ornamented with the amazing stone profiles and eaves motifs which reflect Seljuk and Italian architectural syles.
Covering 15 m2 areas, Anıtkabir is surrogated Istiklal (Liberty) and Hurriyet (Independence) Towers, Lion Road, Mehmetçik, Müdafa-I Hukuk, Republic, Victory, Revolution, Misak-I Milli (National Pact) and 23 April Towers.
ATATURK MUSEUM
Located on the Anıtkabir, that glorious museum consists of Ataturk’s shave sets, sticks, gifts and other his possessions like many photographs about him and his valuable family. In addition to this, the weapons of famous Sabiha Gökçen (the first woman combat pilot) and Afet İnan (foster child of Ataturk) and the mini Koran belonging to Rukiye Erkine (another adopted daughter of him) given by Ataturk as a present were exhibited here.

RR9415/C - TURKEY: ISLAMIC FUNDAMENTALISM (dur: 6 min 29 sec/eng.sot: none)
Ataturk, the founder of the modern Turkish Republic, took Europe for a role model, separating religion from politics and abolishing canonical Islamic law. But while most Turks embraced secularism, calling themselves Muslims while leading modern lives, a fundamentalist minority flourished underground. Now the Refah Partisi (RP) or Welfare Party is trying to transform its image from a Muslim fundamentalist party to a pro-Islamic conservative group with mass appeal. Judging from their success in recent local elections, it looks like they may be succeeding.

Day 2 In Istanbul, Turkey- The Hagia Sophia and Turkish Ice Cream!
Today's vlog is about our experiences on our second day in Turkey. We visited the Hagia Sophia, by far the most impressive monument of the trip, and hopped around the streets down to the water, where we tried Turkish delight and Turkish ice cream. We topped it all off with an authentic dinner at the Old Ottoman restaurant.
Be sure to check in tomorrow for the next vlog.

Mustafa Kemal Ataturk documentary w/ subtitles - In Turkey
Mustafa Kemal Ataturk swept together the ruins of the Ottoman Empire and founded the modern Republic of Turkey in 1923. The reforms of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk were a revolution in all respects: he replaced Sharia law with European laws, separating religion and state, exchanged the Arabic script for the Latin.
Mustafa Kemal Ataturk made the big difference between Turkey and the Middle East. Ataturk's been dead 72 years and although Turks stubbornly stick to his ideas, his legacy is under pressure.

Top 15 Places to See in Istanbul, Turkey
Top 15 Places to See in Istanbul, Turkey
TRAVEL HUSTLE REPEAT GEAR ►
MY FILM MAKING KIT ►
Join David as he shows you around the top 15 places to see in Istanbul! Istanbul is one of the only transcontinental cities on the planet, spreading across Europe and Asia Minor. As Turkey’s largest city, Istanbul is a bustling hub of culture, history and gastronomy – a cosmopolitan capital in every sense.
David begins in the oldest part of the city, the Sultanahmet District. He begins in the Hippodrome (circus), which served as the center of public life for the Greek, Roman, and Byzantine citizens. Present-day Sultan Ahmed Square has a handful of surviving remnants from ancient times.
Near Sultan Ahmed Square are two of Turkey’s most visited attractions, steps from one another – the Ayia Sofia (Hagia Sophia) and Blue Mosque. The Ayia Sofia is now a museum, but was built as an Eastern Orthodox Basilica in 535 A.D. It was a Christian church for over 900 years before the Ottomans used it as a Mosque for another 481 years. It was the largest house of worship in the world for over 1,000 years!
Across the square is the Blue Mosque. Its name comes from the blue tiles used to decorate the interior. Nearby sits the stunning 15th century Topkapi Palace that served as the home and governmental seat for the Ottoman sultans until the 1850s. A tour will reveal beautiful stonework and intricately decorated staterooms, as well as a crown jewel and Imperial treasury exhibition.
After the palace, David takes us to the Archaeology Museum to show us some of what was uncovered in Istanbul. Perhaps the most impressive thing on display is the Sarcophagus of Alexander the Great with its detailed reliefs depicting Alexander’s life of successful conquering.
Not too far from the museum is the Basilica Cistern – a damp and dark subterranean cavern used to collect water for the city. The Medusa heads were likely stolen from a nearby Greco-Roman city to support the columns. Medusa’s face provided a warning against anyone who dared to tamper with the water supply.
The next day, David heads over to the 300-year-old Cağaloğlu Hamamı for a Turkish bath. This Hammam provides full-service spa treatments including scrubbing, steam baths, and massages. Definitely a MUST experience when in Istanbul.
David then heads to the shores of the Bosphorus for a scenic boat ride along the strait. From the water you’ll get panoramic vistas of the Istanbul skyline and get to enjoy view of other areas of this enormous city.
After arriving back on land, David heads to the Beyoğlu District to beautiful pedestrian-friendly Istiklal Street, or “Independence Avenue” for some lunch. It spans about 1.4 kilometers and is the perfect place for shopping and dining. You can walk or take the Nostalgic Tram in either direction. The end of Istiklal Street takes David into the heart of Istanbul, Taksim Square. In the center of the square is the Monument of the Republic (1928) commemorating the formation of the Turkish Republic in 1923.
Onto the Galata District to see a Whirling Dervish show at the Galata Museum. This 800-year old practice of spinning is used as a physical form of meditation. It is a mysterious and beautiful site to behold.
You can’t visit the Galata District and not notice the Galata Tower. It looks over Istanbul and provides 360-degree views of the city, the Bosphorus, Golden Horn and landmarks.
After all that sightseeing, David works up an appetite so he heads to the Karaköy waterfront to enjoy a cheap meal with a 5-star view. Nearby is the fish market. You can’t get to the Karaköy or Galata without crossing the Galata Bridge. From here you’ll see the skylines of both Sultanahmet and Galata districts.
Lastly, David goes out to one of the most exclusive entertainment complexes in the world. Reina sits along the Bosphorus and offers world-class dining, nightclubs, and beautiful ambiance. Dress to impress and make dinner reservations so you can stay after to party!

Madame Tussaud's Istanbul | Wax Museum | Feel Like A Star ~ متحف الشمع - أسطنبول
Madame Tussauds is conveniently situated in the center of Istanbul. It’s located almost halfway Taksim’s Istiklal Avenue, so finding the place is a piece of cake. Everyone in the city can give you directions to Istıklal Avenue. In case you take the Yenikapı – Hacıosman metro line, get off at the Taksim stop and just walk down Istıklal Avenue.
Feel like a star
Even before entering you feel the welcoming atmosphere of the museum. The red carpets call people and tempt them to take a few steps and come inside. The red color surrounds the place. Once you enter, you feel like a star. The experience is quite amazing. Bruce Willis, Lady Gaga and Barış Manço will welcome you on your way to the ticket booths. To win time, buy your tickets online.
After they validate your ticket, you need to use an elevator to go down to floor -2. Free Wi-Fi makes up for the lack of reception there. The exhibition is divided into five sections: History & Leaders, VIP Party, Sport, Culture, Film and Music. It took me around one hour to see all the sections. The journey starts with the History & Leaders part and it is the one I enjoyed the most.
Essence of Turkish history
Atatürk at Madame Tussauds Istanbul.
Atatürk at Madame Tussauds. – © The Istanbul Insider
Turks worship the founder of their republic, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, so it is not a surprise that his sculpture is the first one of the exhibition. It is accompanied by a gentle sound of March of Izmir, a very famous patriotic song. The section continues to guide visitors through Turkish history. After the great Atatürk we meet Fatih Sultan Mehmet, Mimar Sinan, Mevlana and many more, whose names must be familiar to anyone who claims to know or wants to learn Turkish history.
The sculptures already tell you a lot about the past but the museum has much more to offer. I loved the choice of information in the description boxes next to the figures. The information there is very brief and gives you some interesting facts. It is like a quick and fascinating lesson on Turkish history every foreigner should take. So do not forget to read the descriptions, you would not want to miss them! If you have a sharp eye, you will notice some language mistakes. Though they are not very serious, the museum should make more effort to eliminate those.
Eye for Detail

The figures in the museum are amazing; they look so real that if it were not for the famous faces they represent, nobody would be able to tell them apart from real people. They are also in actual size so you might be surprised to learn how short or tall some of the celebrities are. Even the smallest details such as nails, ornaments on clothes and wrinkles are very realistic.
The wax figures are the masterpieces of the museum, but they are not the only ones worth our attention. I loved the decor of the little rooms. Throughout the exhibition you can admire ottoman style, modern Turkish style and the richness and splendid of the red carpet. Moreover, the furniture often comes from the times it represents. Some clothes on the figures are also real clothes worn by the stars. For example the one on Hidayet Türkuoğlu, a famous Turkish basketball player. Apart from that, many accessories accompany the wax figures. You can have a photo wearing Mozart’s wig or Mohammed Ali’s gloves and robe. In general, the museum is perfect for taking many photos that will be a nice souvenir of the trip to Istanbul.
Accompanying Music
Great music makes the whole experience of visiting Madame Tussauds even better. It is amazing how it changes when we visit different figures. When you stand next to Beyoncé, you will hear her songs. When you move a few steps away, you will find yourself next to some famous Turkish singers and you will listen to their music. What is surprising is that the songs do not interfere with each other. The volume and timing are perfectly coordinated. Furthermore, some of the musical instruments used for the displays are real and ready to use. You can make your own music. This attraction is especially popular with children.
Keeping Kids Entertained

I can honestly say that Madame Tussauds offers many attractions for children. Apart from the instruments, there are the accessories, gaming consoles, quizzes about the stars and best of all, a workshop where you can actually make your own wax hand. It costs extra but it will be an interesting souvenir and you will be able to see the whole process of creating it. If you get tired (seeing the entire exhibition is quite a walk) you may sit down in one of the couches or armchairs and take a break before visiting the rest of the exhibition.

House of the Virgin Mary, Mother of Jesus-Turkey
The House of the Virgin Mary is a Catholic and Muslim shrine located on Mt. Koressos in the vicinity of Ephesus, Turkey. The house was discovered in the 19th century by following the descriptions in the reported visions of Blessed Anne Catherine Emmerich (1774–1824), a paralyzed German Roman Catholic nun and visionary, which were published as a book by Clemens Brentano after her death. One of Emmerich's accounts was a description of the house the Apostle John had built in Ephesus for Mary, the mother of Jesus, where she had lived to the end of her life.
Archaeologists who have examined the building believe most of the building dates from the 6th or 7th century but its foundations are much older and may well date from the 1st century AD, the time of Mary. The Catholic Church has never come out in favor or against the authenticity of the house, but nevertheless maintains a steady flow of pilgrims since its discovery.

ISTANBUL TURKEY: Cihangir Walking Tour
We created a walking tour around the popular Cihangir neighborhood in Istanbul Turkey. It took us to the very popular Taksim Square.
Taksim Square is considered the heart of modern Istanbul. And in the heart of the square is the Republic Monument constructed in 1928 to commemorate the 5th anniversary of Republic of Turkey.
On the square is a new Mosque. Construction on the mosque in Taksim square began in 2017 and was and still is very controversial. Many see the building of the mosque and stamping a religious identity on the square that was paying tribute to Ataturk, who fought for a secular state.
After that, we stopped by Ağa Hamami. Ağa hamamı is an authentic Turkish bath built in the mid-1400s. It claims to be the oldest Hamami still in use.
Next, we went on the famous walking street, Istiklal where we went to Çiçek Pasaji, an old theater turned hidden passageway of shops and restaurants.
Of course, no tour of this area would be complete without stopping at Galata Tower. The original Galata tower was built as a lighthouse. It controlled the northern end of the massive sea chain that closed the entrance to the Golden Horn, an inlet that joins Bosphorus Strait with the Sea of Marmara.
And we end this tour at Galata Bridge. Galata Bridge is the first recorded bridge over the Golden Horn in Istanbul. It was built during the reign of Justinian the Great in the 6th century.

“Let’s go” has pretty much been our life’s motto since we met nearly 25 years ago. We met in New York, moved to San Diego together, and married in Lake Tahoe – all within five months. When you know, you know – you know what we mean?
Now, after raising two adventure-seeking boys, we are ready to get out and explore some more. Our children have begun their lives and now it’s time to begin the second-half of ours.
We wanted a challenge and something fun, so we are starting an adventure of a lifetime. We’re calling it #60×60. Our plan is to travel to 60 countries by the time Kim turns 60 (that’s in 6 years by the way).
