THE HISTORY OF P-520 CRASH RESCUE BOATS AND THE CENTRAL COAST
The P-520 Boat is a United States Army Air Forces Crash Rescue Boat from WWII, commonly referred to as crash boats since they were intended to retrieve downed pilots and crew. P-520s served on the west coast during WWII and some crash boats were stationed in Morro Bay where they trained infantrymen in landing operations with the Landing Craft Vehicle Personnel (LCVP) or Higgins boats. The P-520s were rescue boats not meant for offensive operations, but did carry some armament including two mountable, operational .50 caliber Browning machine guns in “gun tubs.” Physically the boat is 85-feet long, with a 20-foot beam. Crash boats look very much like the famed PT Boats of WWII often shown on the McHale’s Navy television show during the 1960's.
This particular P-520 arriving in Morro Bay also served a stint at Avila Beach for a period in 1944 and undoubtedly came into Morro Bay during that time. It was built in Southern California and is the only, fully intact, restored US Crash Boat in the world. The P-520 was restored by the current owner and his late father over the course of 10-12 years. The owner offered to let the Morro Bay Maritime Museum use it as an educational and fundraising platform from the week of 4th of July through the Annual Morro Bay Harbor Festival the first weekend of October.

Marina Boardwalk Morro Bay CA 5Oct12
1-minute video summary of:
Documentation photos (85) of the California State Park Marina Boardwalk project. Morro Bay, CA. 05 October 2012.
This exhaustive documentary set contains a complete collection of 85 bulk unedited images showing the views when traversing the entire path, starting from and ending at the parking lot at the south end of the Marina, walking first counter-clockwise, and then clockwise. It took 45 minutes to walk the entire path twice, stopping briefly to take the photos, spanning1.5 miles, or 3/4 mile per revolution. This project is approaching completion. The new boardwalk and presumably ADA compliant path now spans the entire circumference of the Marina Peninsula opposite the Morro Bay Museum of Natural History across from the Morro Bay campgrounds and golf course.
A related Motion-X GPS track report recorded at the same time can be seen at (valid until Apr 3, 2013).
You can see a related YouTube video showing this boardwalk about one month ago during an earlier stage of completion. Published on Sep 8, 2012 by Michael Baird

Commercial Abalone Diving: The Super Real.
This is a 14-minute video excerpt from video shot in 1997 to prove that there was red abalone south of SF.
The abalone in this video is mostly sub-commercial legal (7 3/4) in size. The divers had been working the region following the March opener. Typically, most of the legal abalone were groomed down, leaving the sub-legal for the fall fishery and/or next season. One can easily see the size structure demonstrating good spawning, settling, and recruitment into the fishery over time. Consider too the density of these abalones and one can see that many of these spots are very similar to those ones might see on the north coast. The diver in this video is Mike Candy (RIP).
The problem in 1997? What problem? This fishery at San Miguel Island was producing about 50,000 abalones per season, at about 1% of emergent red abalone harvested.(CDFG, 1997)--leaving 99% in the water.
