If you know me, then you know I am big on sweating it out at the sauna. I only had a 22 hour stopover in Istanbul, but I made the most of it. I was with my lovely momma, and so I took us to the local hamam, a traditional Turkish bath house. The cost was 100 Lira ($15 usd) each for the entrance with a scrub and wash. The men wash and scrub the men and women wash and scrub the women. It included even a short but good massage. Here is my first impressions.

Things to eat and to do in Istanbul
Follow Us as we take you on a double quick time tour of what we did in Istanbul, within a span of 4 days!
We visited strategic landmarks such as the Hagia Sophia, the Grand Bazaar, the Basilica Cistern and Theodosius Cistern, and even took a bath (or rather was given a bath) the traditional way in the Ayasofya Hamam. We even found time to enjoy the sunset view whilst on a river taxi commute which was a really wonderful experience as we watch this amazing cradle of civilisation lights up from afar with the call to prayers by Muezzin from the mosques with very iconic architecture peppered across the city.
More importantly, we tasted delicious food! Loads and loads of them!!! Some of the Turkish cuisines which we showcase in our vlog were rated highly by Trip Advisor, and true to their accolades, the food was truly amazing! And of course, we could not leave Turkey without sampling Turkish delights and apple tea! Their desserts were really yummy and unique too!
We hope this vlog will serve as an inspiration for some of you as you plan your future itinerary for Istanbul. Please let us know if you have questions and we will be more than happy to help out! :D

ISTANBUL TURKEY: Cihangir Walking Tour
We created a walking tour around the popular Cihangir neighborhood in Istanbul Turkey. It took us to the very popular Taksim Square.
Taksim Square is considered the heart of modern Istanbul. And in the heart of the square is the Republic Monument constructed in 1928 to commemorate the 5th anniversary of Republic of Turkey.
On the square is a new Mosque. Construction on the mosque in Taksim square began in 2017 and was and still is very controversial. Many see the building of the mosque and stamping a religious identity on the square that was paying tribute to Ataturk, who fought for a secular state.
After that, we stopped by Ağa Hamami. Ağa hamamı is an authentic Turkish bath built in the mid-1400s. It claims to be the oldest Hamami still in use.
Next, we went on the famous walking street, Istiklal where we went to Çiçek Pasaji, an old theater turned hidden passageway of shops and restaurants.
Of course, no tour of this area would be complete without stopping at Galata Tower. The original Galata tower was built as a lighthouse. It controlled the northern end of the massive sea chain that closed the entrance to the Golden Horn, an inlet that joins Bosphorus Strait with the Sea of Marmara.
And we end this tour at Galata Bridge. Galata Bridge is the first recorded bridge over the Golden Horn in Istanbul. It was built during the reign of Justinian the Great in the 6th century.
We hope you enjoy this tour as much as we did.

“Let’s go” has pretty much been our life’s motto since we met nearly 25 years ago. We met in New York, moved to San Diego together, and married in Lake Tahoe – all within five months. When you know, you know – you know what we mean?
Now, after raising two adventure-seeking boys, we are ready to get out and explore some more. Our children have begun their lives and now it’s time to begin the second-half of ours.
We wanted a challenge and something fun, so we are starting an adventure of a lifetime. We’re calling it #60×60. Our plan is to travel to 60 countries by the time Kim turns 60 (that’s in 6 years by the way).

Suleymaniye Mosque - Istanbul, Turkey -
Suleymaniye Mosque - Istanbul, Turkey -
The Suleiman Mosque was built on the order of sultan Suleiman the Magnificent and constructed by the great Ottoman architect Sinan. The construction work began in 1550 and the mosque was finished in 1557.The mosque is modeled in part on the style of a Byzantine basilica, particularly the Hagia Sophia, which was perhaps a conscious move on the part of the sultan to create a continuity and a symbolic connection with the city's past. The Suleiman Mosque was ravaged by a fire in 1660 and was restored on the command of sultan Mehmed IV by architect Fossatı. The restoration, however, changed the mosque into a more baroque style, damaging the great work severely. The mosque was restored to its original glory during the 19th century but during World War I the courtyard was used as a weapons depot and when some of the ammunition ignited, the mosque suffered another fire. Not until 1956 was it restored again. Today, the Suleiman Mosque is one of the most popular sights in Istanbul. The mosque is 59 meters in length and 58 meters in width. The main dome is 53 meters high and has a diameter of 27.25 meters.Apart from the main mosque with the prayer hall (cami) and courtyard (avlu), the mosque complex also includes a caravanserai or seraglio (sarayı; han), a public kitchen (imaret) which served food to the poor, a hospital (darüşşifa), a Qur'an school (medrese) and a bath-house (hamam). In the garden behind the main mosque there are two mausoleums (türbe) including the tombs of sultan Suleiman I, his wife Roxelana (Haseki Hürrem), his daughter Mihrimah, his mother Dilaşub Saliha and his sister Asiye. Suleiman's tomb features a system of layered domes copied from the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem. The sultans Suleiman II, Ahmed II and Safiye (died in 1777), the daughter of Mustafa II, are also buried here. Just outside the mosque walls to the north is the humble tomb of Sinan, designed by the occupant himself.
