Sulphide Street Railway & Historical Museum
The Sulphide Street Railway & Historical Museum Complex is in fact four museums; Railway, Hospital, Migrant and Transport. The museum is the spiritual home of the Silverton Tramway Company that provided passenger and freight rail service to the Broken Hill community from 1888-1970, closing when rail gauge was nationalised. The collection includes locos, plans and other memorabilia. The museum is currently cataloguing its collection and housing important memorabilia in a dedicated Archives Room.
The Hospital Museum records the history of Broken Hill's Hospitals and personnel through photographs, interpretive signs and medical equipment-some pretty scary looking instruments!
The Migrant Museum depicts a journey of hardship and triumph over incredible odds.
The Transport Pavilion and the locomotives bring smiles to the young-and not so young.
The latest exhibit is a third sized replica of the Royal State Coach and its horses, riders and beef-eaters.
Christine Adams was born in Broken Hill. She is a member of a mining family whose connection to Broken Hill began in 1887. She holds an Advanced Diploma in Applied & Local History and is the author of several publications including Way out West: Pastoral Stories of Western New South Wales and Sharing The Lode: The Broken Hill Migrant Story. The latter is the recorded history of persons from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds that made Broken Hill their home. She is the curator of the Sulphide Street Railway & Historical Museum which also houses the Migrant Museum which encapsulates the migrant stories.

Barrier Story
In November 2013 the NFSA's Big Screen rolled into Broken Hill. To mark the occasion we presented Barrier Story made by the National Film Board in 1953 and directed by Hugh Alexander. The production described Broken Hill, the uncrowned capital of Western New South Wales, as being transformed from a single sheep station in the 1800s to a lusty, swaggering metropolis situated on one of the richest silver, lead and zinc fields in the world. It presents a picture of harmony and co-operation between industry and the people of Broken Hill that has built a vigorous and active community. BHP — UNDERMINING THE FUTURE
On Thursday 26 Nov 2009 there was a protest against the activities of BHP Billiton in Australia and around the world. The protest was organised by Friends of the Earth. Over thirty years ago a group of protesters were christened Friends of the Dirt by former premier of Qld, Joh Bjelke-Petersen, when we were stopping, no delaying, uranium shipments from Hamilton Number 4 wharf in Brisbane with the help of Brisbane Waterside Workers and their union the WWF.
BHP stands for Broken Hill Pty Ltd which was the major Australian mining operation for most of the post war era before it merged with Billiton to become the largest mining company in the world. We should not forget the long history of BHP ripping off workers both in Australia and abroad. They ripped off Chilean copper workers under the yoke of the Dictator Pinochet after the military coup in Chile in 1973.
