The Sultan Ahmed Mosque has one main dome, six minarets, and eight secondary domes. The design is the culmination of two centuries of Ottoman mosque development. It incorporates some Byzantine Christian elements of the neighboring Hagia Sophia with traditional Islamic architecture and is considered to be the last great mosque of the classical period. The architect, Sedefkâr Mehmed Ağa, synthesized the ideas of his master Sinan, aiming for overwhelming size, majesty and splendour.( Source : wiki)

BREAKING NEWS: 'Several' people killed and injured after explosion by 'suicide bomber' rips through tourist district of Istanbul! So sad. 12 Jan 2016
In this video, we were in Istanbul, Turkey. On a cruise on the Norwegian Jade. Istanbul, Turkey, was an overnight port, giving us more time to explore. This was our visit to the Sultan Ahmed Mosque, or more famously known as the Blue Mosque due to its blue tiles on the ceiling. It was a beautiful Mosque. Awesome place to visit. Come check it out when you are in Istanbul. Some more information of the Sultan Ahmed Mosque from wiki:
The Sultan Ahmed Mosque or Sultan Ahmet Mosque (Turkish: Sultan Ahmet Camii) is a historic mosque located in Istanbul, Turkey's Historic Centre. A popular tourist site, Sultan Ahmed Mosque continues as a mosque today with men kneeling in prayer on the mosque's lush red carpet after the call to prayer. Construction of the Blue Mosque, as it is popularly known, was built between 1609 and 1616 during the rule of Ahmed I. Its Külliye contains Ahmed's tomb, a madrasah and a hospice. Magnificent hand-painted blue tiles adorn the mosque’s interior walls and at night the mosque is bathed in blue as lights frame the mosque’s five main domes, six minarets and eight secondary domes. [2]
The Sultan Ahmed Mosque is one of the three mosques in Turkey that has six minarets (the other two being the modern Sabancı Mosque in Adana and the Hz. Mikdat Mosque in Mersin). According to folklore, an architect misheard the Sultan's request for altın minareler (gold minarets) as altı minare (six minarets), at the time a unique feature of the mosque of the Ka'aba in Mecca. When criticized for his presumption, the Sultan then ordered a seventh minaret to be built at the Mecca mosque.[12]
Minarets of the mosque.
Four minarets stand at the corners of the Blue Mosque. Each of these fluted, pencil-shaped minarets has three balconies (Called Şerefe) with stalactite corbels, while the two others at the end of the forecourt only have two balconies. Before the muezzin or prayer caller had to climb a narrow spiral staircase five times a day to announce the call to prayer.[12]
Today, a public announce system is being used, and the call can be heard across the old part of the city, echoed by other mosques in the vicinity. Large crowds of both Turks and tourists gather at sunset in the park facing the mosque to hear the call to evening prayers, as the sun sets and the mosque is brilliantly illuminated by colored floodlights.[12]

Originally from Nashville, Tennessee, we got married June 2013 and quickly caught the travel bug! We started “travel hacking” and taking more trips together and finally decided we wanted to travel for one year. After 2 years of saving $ and travel hacking over 2 million miles and points, we sold our cars and apartment and left home January 10, 2016. We started this YouTube channel to share our experiences with friends and family, then decided we really liked vlogging and traveling. So we extended our 1 year trip to THREE years :) Now we have a goal of traveling to 100 countries before Nate turns 30 (which is March 20, 2019)! We are incredibly thankful to do something we love every day. :)

Istanbul's Old City: Sultanahmet and Surrounds
Istanbul's Old City surrounding Sultanahmet is rich in ancient architecture which includes the famous Topkapi Palace, Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia. Once known as Constantinople - the capital of the Byzantine, Istanbul was centered historically around Sultanahmet. Istanbul's historical architectures are deeply influenced by the Byzantine, and Ottoman Empires, which all, at some point in history, controlled Constantinople, thus the architectural designs are diverse and are deeply seeded in history.
The attractions in the Old City are located at a walking distance from each other and can be conveniently accessed in a day trip though you should be speedy in arriving early to avoid the crowds.
This short video introduces Divan Yolu, Topkapi Palace, Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia, Basilica Cistern, the Hippodrome, Kucuk Ayasofya Mosque, Gülhane Park, Arasta Bazaar as well as Star Holiday Hotel which I stayed at. I hope you enjoy this experience through history.
Thank you for watching.

Blue Mosque Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Blue Mosque in Turkey.
The tall minarets of the Sultan Ahmet Mosque, known also as the Blue Mosque, tower proudly into the heavens and dominate the skyline of Istanbul, the Turkish capital on the Bosporus. At the beginning of the 17th century the young and ambitious sultan, Ahmet The First, decided that an additional building should replace the Hagia Sophia as the city’s main mosque. With its graduated cupolas, the building was designed to be as impressive as possible, thus a spacious courtyard was also included. Elegant columned halls surround a square at the centre of which there is an hexagonal fountain where the faithful once cleansed themselves prior to prayer. Today, the faithful wash themselves along the external sidewalls of the courtyard. In the eastern section is the Mederse, the mosque’s School of the Koran. Four massive five metre thick pillars known as ‘Elephants’ Feet’ support the incredible weight of the Blue Mosque’s massive central cupola. It derived its popular alias of the Blue Mosque due to its internal décor that consists of twenty-one thousand precious blue coloured Fayence wall tiles from Iznik. The Topkapi Palace, which over the years was greatly extended by various sultans, is also located in the historic centre of Istanbul and until 1853 it was the royal residence of the Osmanic royal family. Along the picturesque shoreline of the Bosporus are numerous ancient mosques, palaces and villas and one of the longest and most impressive suspension bridges in the world connects this fascinating European city and its twelve million inhabitants to Asia.

ISTANBUL Sultan Ahmet Square | Topkapi Palace
Here's My Travel Story ISTANBUL Part 3
Where I've Been
- Sultanahmet Square
The Historic Heart of Old Istanbul
- Tomb of Sultan Ahmet I
The tomb of Sultan Ahmet I, the Blue Mosque’s great patron is on the north side of the mosque facing Sultanahmet Park.
- Hagia Sophia (Aya Sofya)
The Hagia Sophia (Ayasofya in Turkish) once a church, later a mosque, and now a museum and is among the world’s greatest architectural achievements in Istanbul. The church became a Mosque under the Ottomans, and its mosaics and decoration were plastered over.
This is a place that takes your breath away! Absolutely something to see and experience.
- Topkapı Palace (Topkapı Sarayı)
Topkapi Palace is one of the most famous tourist attraction in Istanbul. It has many exhibion halls, Treasury section, and Harem. It was built in between 1466 and 1478 by the Sultan Mehmet II. .
The palace was the political center of the Ottoman Empire between the 15th and 19th centuries, until they built Dolmabahce Palace by the waterside.
The Topkapi Palace is in the Sultanahmet near the Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque. .
- Hagia Irene (Aya İrini), (on the grounds of Topkapı Palace).
Hagia Irene means Divine Peace in Greek, so it was a church dedicated to holly peace
The wooden construction was burned during the Nika Riot in 532 AD and it was renovated by Justinian I.
Today, Hagia Irene church is located in the first courtyard of the Topkapi Palace behind Hagia Sophia, and is called as Aya Irini in Turkish.
- Sultanahmet Mosque (Sultanahmet Camii, aka Blue Mosque)
The Sultan Ahmet Mosque (Turkish: Sultan Ahmet Camii) is a historic mosque located in Istanbul.
The mosque is known as the Blue Mosque because of the blue tiles surrounding the walls of interior design. Mosque was built between 1609 and 1616 years, during the rule of Ahmed I. .
Pray happens five times a day with the first call to prayer at sunrise and the last one at nightfall.
The blue Mosque is one of the most magnificent building in Turkey and one of my favorite spot.
- Hippodrome
The Hippodrome was the centre of Byzantium's life for 1000 years and of Ottoman life for another 400 years, and has been the scene of countless political dramas.
- Sehzade Cag Kebap
One of the best Kebab in Istanbul.
I tried the cag Kebabs (2 skewers of lamb).
Very small restaurant, quick service and great taste.

Turkey (Turkish: Türkiye [ˈtyɾcije]), officially the Republic of Turkey (Turkish: Türkiye Cumhuriyeti [ˈtyɾcije d͡ʒumˈhuɾijeti] (About this sound listen)), is a transcontinental country in Eurasia, located mainly in Western Asia, with a smaller portion on the Balkan peninsula in Southeast Europe. Turkey is bordered by eight countries: Greece and Bulgaria to the northwest; Georgia to the northeast; Armenia, the Azerbaijani exclave of Nakhchivan and Iran to the east; and Iraq and Syria to the south. The country is encircled by seas on three sides, with the Aegean Sea to the west, the Black Sea to the north, and the Mediterranean Sea to the south. The Bosphorus, the Sea of Marmara, and the Dardanelles, which together form the Turkish Straits, divide Thrace and Anatolia and separate Europe from Asia. Ankara is the capital while Istanbul is the country's largest city and main cultural and commercial centre, classified as a leading global city.

Hagia Sophia (/ˈhɑːɡiə soʊˈfiːə/; from the Greek Αγία Σοφία, pronounced [aˈʝia soˈfia], Holy Wisdom; Latin: Sancta Sophia or Sancta Sapientia; Turkish: Ayasofya) is the former Greek Orthodox Catholic patriarchal cathedral, later an Ottoman imperial mosque and now a museum (Ayasofya Müzesi) in Istanbul, Turkey. Built in 537 AD at the beginning of the Middle Ages, it was famous in particular for its massive dome. It was the world's largest building and an engineering marvel of its time. It is considered the epitome of Byzantine architecture and is said to have changed the history of architecture
Turkish delight or lokum is a family of confections based on a gel of starch and sugar. Premium varieties consist largely of chopped dates, pistachios, and hazelnuts or walnuts bound by the gel; traditional varieties are often flavored with rosewater, mastic, Bergamot orange, or lemon. The confection is often packaged and eaten in small cubes dusted with icing sugar, copra, or powdered cream of tartar, to prevent clinging. Other common flavors include cinnamon and mint. In the production process, soapwort may be used as an emulsifying additive.
Wishing Column
There is a column with a hole in the middle covered by bronze plates at the northwest of the building which was also named as the perspiring column or the wishing column. In some references, it is indicated that this column had become blessed in due course among community. Rumors appeared in East-Roman period that it had a healing effect on humans. The legend has it that, Emperor Justinian wandering in the building with a severe headache leaned his head to this column and after a while he realized that the headache was gone. This story had been heard among the public and the rumor regarding the healing effect of the column got around. Hence, people believed that they would get better if they put their fingers into that hole on the column and then rub them to the place where disease is felt. According to another legend, this wetness is described as the tear of Virgin Mary.
