Istanbul Old City Walking Tour 2019 | Sultanahmet Square
Today we are exploring the old city of Istanbul by walking through the history of the past Constantinople and Istanbul. This video of our series Walking in Istanbul started at 9 am in front of the Hagia Sophia Museum. It was still early and the Sultanahmet Square was not crowded but the first tourist groups already arrived and were waiting to enter the Aya Sofya (Hagia Sophia). The old city walk continued direction Blue Mosque (Sultanahmet Camii) and the German Fountain (Alman Çeşmesi). There is a big square as you can see on the video. We call it Sultanahmet Meydanı (Square). In the past, in the roman period there was a hippodrome for the carriage races. There are 3 monuments decorating the Hippodrome. The first one on the video is the Egyptian Obelisk. The second the Serpent Column and the third one the Constantine Obelisk. We are continuing to walk on the narrow streets of Istanbul Old City and see the Sphendone of the Hippodrome and some old city hotels. There is also a vegetable Market opened that day. Our walking Tour 2019 finishes at the Küçük Ayasofya Camii (Mosque). This mosque was originally made during the Byzantine Period as a Church. The name of the church was Sergius and Bacchus Church and was built during the reign of Justinian. During the Ottoman Period the church was converted into a mosque.
Enjoy Walking in Istanbul 2019!

ISTANBUL Sultan Ahmet Square | Topkapi Palace
Here's My Travel Story ISTANBUL Part 3
Where I've Been
- Sultanahmet Square
The Historic Heart of Old Istanbul
- Tomb of Sultan Ahmet I
The tomb of Sultan Ahmet I, the Blue Mosque’s great patron is on the north side of the mosque facing Sultanahmet Park.
- Hagia Sophia (Aya Sofya)
The Hagia Sophia (Ayasofya in Turkish) once a church, later a mosque, and now a museum and is among the world’s greatest architectural achievements in Istanbul. The church became a Mosque under the Ottomans, and its mosaics and decoration were plastered over.
This is a place that takes your breath away! Absolutely something to see and experience.
- Topkapı Palace (Topkapı Sarayı)
Topkapi Palace is one of the most famous tourist attraction in Istanbul. It has many exhibion halls, Treasury section, and Harem. It was built in between 1466 and 1478 by the Sultan Mehmet II. .
The palace was the political center of the Ottoman Empire between the 15th and 19th centuries, until they built Dolmabahce Palace by the waterside.
The Topkapi Palace is in the Sultanahmet near the Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque. .
- Hagia Irene (Aya İrini), (on the grounds of Topkapı Palace).
Hagia Irene means Divine Peace in Greek, so it was a church dedicated to holly peace
The wooden construction was burned during the Nika Riot in 532 AD and it was renovated by Justinian I.
Today, Hagia Irene church is located in the first courtyard of the Topkapi Palace behind Hagia Sophia, and is called as Aya Irini in Turkish.
- Sultanahmet Mosque (Sultanahmet Camii, aka Blue Mosque)
The Sultan Ahmet Mosque (Turkish: Sultan Ahmet Camii) is a historic mosque located in Istanbul.
The mosque is known as the Blue Mosque because of the blue tiles surrounding the walls of interior design. Mosque was built between 1609 and 1616 years, during the rule of Ahmed I. .
Pray happens five times a day with the first call to prayer at sunrise and the last one at nightfall.
The blue Mosque is one of the most magnificent building in Turkey and one of my favorite spot.
- Hippodrome
The Hippodrome was the centre of Byzantium's life for 1000 years and of Ottoman life for another 400 years, and has been the scene of countless political dramas.
- Sehzade Cag Kebap
One of the best Kebab in Istanbul.
I tried the cag Kebabs (2 skewers of lamb).
Very small restaurant, quick service and great taste.

Sultanahmet Square Tour (Historic Peninsula) - Istanbul (Turkey)
Sultanahmet square is in the Historic Peninsula of Istanbul. The area was the Hippodrome of Constantinople in Byzantine Empire era. There are still some ancient monuments of the Hippodrome in the square.
Sultanahmet Square - Turkey, Istanbul - December 2019
So, here we go ... It has been a crazy couple of weeks. We left Santorini on November 7th and flew into Turkey for just under a week. Lots to see and do in Instanbul, but leaving Europe was a little intimidating.
When we flew in I screwed up the Visas, by using Noble and Arete’s old Passports ... then I didn’t book a car because Istanbul is crazy congested and we didn’t want to pay $100 to get a private transfer to Sultanahmet ... so, it was off to public transport with all of our luggage and our kids in tow.
For future travellers: take the elevator all the way down to the bottom and don’t get deterred by the massive, “NO RE-ENTRY” sign ... the bus has a credit card terminal. Unfortunately, I did get deterred, went back up to a bunch of ATMs that I did not recognize and pulled some money out, then back down, then onto a bus.
An hour and a half bus ride, visiting with some nice people from the Netherlands and we arrive to the last call to Prayer in the middle of Sultanahmet square. We then dragged our bags and our children down cobble stone streets to finally find ourselves at our AirBNB, which was small, but much better than our Santorini Trailer situation.
Also, fun fact, IST is the largest Airport in the world.
These shots were already shared on stories, but they will now be here forever. Sultanahmet is super cool, tons of history here along with the Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, and Topkapi Palace.

Sultanahmet (Meydanı) SQUARE
The imperial palace, known as the Great Palace, used to spread over an area extending from the Hippodrome down to the seashore. Only the mosaic floor panel of a large hall remains from this palace today. The Augusteion, the most important square of the city, used to be here, and between the square and the main avenue there was the Millairium victory arch. The road used to extend as far as Rome and the stone marking the first kilometer was located here. The baths, temples, religious, cultural, administrative and social centers were all in this district. The area maintained its importance in the Byzantine and Turkish eras. Therefore some of the most important monuments of Istanbul such as the Hagia Sophia, Sultan Ahmet Mosque, the Museum of Turkish and Islamic Art and the Basilica Cistern are all located around the Hippodrome.
Mısır Obelisk The main streets in the city (those leading down to the harbor and those extending toward the city walls in the west) started at the Hippodrome and followed the slopes of the hills. The streets were lined with business establishments and mansions. The side streets were narrow and some were stepped. Some of the main streets had two-galleried sidewalks. There were spacious squares along the route and the side roads forking from these squares led to the city gates. The main avenue was called the Mese, and Via Egnetia, the road to Rome, started at the Golden Gate (Altmkapi).
Hippodrome means square for horses. The Hippodrome was built by the Roman Emperor Septimius Severus towards the end of the 2nc* century and it was extended to an immense size by Constantine the Great. Some historians claim that it could seat thirty thousand spectators, while others put the figure at sixty thousand. The main attraction was the two or four-horse chariot races. In Roman and Byzantine times, the Hippodrome served as the city's main meeting, entertainment and sports center until the 10tn century. Like many of the other monuments in the city, it lost its importance with the Latin invasion in 1204. Besides the chariot races and gladiator fights with wild animals, there were performances by musicians, dancers and acrobats. There were many public holidays during Roman times to allow opportunities for all these activities.
The Hippodrome was shaped like a gigantic U and the imperial box, built like a balcony with four bronze horses on its roof, was situated on the eastern side. The sand-covered surface of the Hippodrome was divided into two by a low wall around which the chariots raced. On this wall stood monuments brought here from different corners of the empire and the statues of famous riders and their horses. Successful chariot drivers were very wealthy and could have anything they wanted. Originally there were 4 teams of drivers whose supporters' clubs formed large quarrelling factions and competed for position and prestige in the city. From time to time politics intermingled with the races, and the clashes between competing forces turned into bloody massacres.
The original ground level of the Hippodrome was 4 or 5 meters lower than the present surface. Three monuments have remained to our day: the Egyptian Obelisk, the Serpent Column and the Walled Obelisk. In the Turkish era, too, festivals, ^ceremonies and performances used to be organized here. The Palace of Ibrahim Pasa opposite Sultan Ahmet Mosque is the sole example of the imposing private residences of the 16th century. This elegant building now houses the Museum of Turkish and Islamic Art.
Only the round southern end of the vast Hippodrome has survived. This is a brick structure decorated with tall vaults. In later ages, all of the stone blocks and columns of the Hippodrome were used for building material. The ruins in the park to the right of the entrance to the Hippodrome belong to 4th and 5th century private palaces, and a little further along there are the remains of the Byzantine Hagia Euphemia church.

The Hippodrome of Constantinople (Greek: Ἱππόδρομος τῆς Κωνσταντινουπόλεως, romanized: Hippódromos tēs Kōnstantinoupóleōs) was a circus that was the sporting and social centre of Constantinople, capital of the Byzantine Empire. Today it is a square named Sultanahmet Meydanı (Sultan Ahmet Square) in the Turkish city of Istanbul, with a few fragments of the original structure surviving.
The word hippodrome comes from the Greek hippos (ἵππος), horse, and dromos (δρόμος), path or way. For this reason, it is sometimes also called Atmeydanı (Horse Square) in Turkish. Horse racing and chariot racing were popular pastimes in the ancient world and hippodromes were common features of Greek cities in the Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine era.

Tour of Istanbul, SultanAhmet & Fatih
To book Halal hotels in Istanbul Turkey, click on the link below;
Taxis - BE VERY CAREFUL. They will rip you off by taking the long way around, going round and round and even changing the figures on the meter! Best thing to do is agree a price beforehand or keep an eye on the meter. turkeytravelplanner.com has lots of useful info.
Tram/public transport is best to use by buying an ISTANBULKART (its like an Oyster card) where you tap in. But the difference is you can use one card between lots of people. Once you tap in, you give the card to the next person and they can tap in too. So don’t buy more than 1 card! You can use the card on ferries as well as the tram but not on all buses.
You can pretty much walk everywhere too in Istanbul. Most of the sight seeing tours are all located in Sultanahmet or within walking distance.
Things to do and see in Istanbul;
1. Aya Sofia
2. Blue/Sultanahmet Mosque
3. Suleymanie Mosque
4. Gulhane Park
5. Galata Tower
6. Basilica Cistern
7. Topkapi Palace
8. Rustem Pasha Mosque
9. Eyup Sultan Mosque (otherwise know as Salahuddin the famous conqueror of Jerusalem). If you go there on Jumuah day you will not find space anywhere - it’s very popular. You normally have to pray outside. (Recommend praying jumuah at Suleymanie)
10. Miniaturk
11. Museums - Istanbul archeological; Turkish & Islamic Arts Museum etc. Lots of museums to visit. You can buy the Museum Pass which allows you access to lots of buildings including Aya Sofia and Topkapi Palace as well as all the museums - 5 day pass is only 85Liras. Cheapest way to visit everywhere if you visit more than 3 buildings. Can buy the pass at any Museum.
12. New Mosque (but 500 years old). Near this mosque there’s usually a gallery that’s got different artists and displays.
13. Galata Bridge/Bosphorus (fish sandwiches very delicious here)
14. Istiklal Street. Can find all designer and non designer stuff here. Also something to have here is ‘wet hamburgers’ - steamed buns with burger inside. Very nice. And cheap.
15. Maiden’s Tower - very nice to sit on the coastline and watch the sun set. Also good tea here
16. Eminonu Square. Cheapest stuff here. Underneath the subway. You normally won’t get anything cheaper than here so if you want to buy stuff buy it from here! It’s slightly cheaper to go to the Asian side of Istanbul but harder to locate things.
17. Bazaars - Grand Bazaar and Spice Bazaar. Grand Bazaar is expensive compared to spice Bazaar. Spice Bazaar has everything they Grand Bazaar has but just more spices. Everything is cheaper in the spice Bazaar than the grand one. Can visit both just to see but buy stuff from Spice Bazaar.
18. There are lots of hidden shops around the Bazaar which have really good stuff and cheaper than the bazaars so just browse.
19. Take the ferry/cruise
20. Princes Islands (day trip)
There’s so much more to see and do. Can’t even mention most of that stuff. Food wise- in Sultanahmet it’s not the best and it’s the most priciest as it’s the tourist hotspot.
One restaurant I would recommend is Ciya Sofrasi but this is on the Asian side of Istanbul. You will have to take the ferry across but it is worth it.
For desserts - Hafiz Mustafa (though it’s expensive) is probably the better dessert places.
All of our videos have no nasheed or additional sounds and include the original audio so that you can immerse yourself into getting the feeling of a full experience of the locations.

Istanbul, Turkey: Views around Sultan Ahmet Square - 1st August, 2012 (HD)
Sultan Ahmet Square, which was once known as The Hippodrome of Constantinople was a circus that was the sporting and social centre of Constantinople, capital of the Byzantine Empire. Today it is a square named Sultanahmet Meydanı (Sultan Ahmet Square) in the Turkish city of Istanbul, with a few fragments of the original structure surviving. It is sometimes also called Atmeydanı (Horse Square) in Turkish.
This video features views of the buildings, streets, gardens, statues, shops and bazaar in and around the square. Featured in the video are the following:
The Obelisk of Theodosius - The Obelisk of Theodosius (Turkish: Dikilitaş) is the Ancient Egyptian obelisk of Pharaoh Tutmoses III re-erected in the Hippodrome of Constantinople. The obelisk was first set up by Tutmoses III (1479--1425 BC) to the south of the seventh pylon of the great temple of Karnak. The Roman emperor Constantius II (337-361 AD) had it and another obelisk transported along the river Nile to Alexandria to commemorate his ventennalia or 20 years on the throne in 357. The other obelisk was erected on the spina of the Circus Maximus in Rome in the autumn of that year, and is today known as the Lateran obelisk, whilst the obelisk that would become the obelisk of Theodosius remained in Alexandria until 390, when Theodosius I (378-392 AD) had it transported to Constantinople and put up on the spina of the Hippodrome there.
The Walled Obelisk - The 32 m (105 ft)-high obelisk was constructed of roughly cut stones by Constantine VII. Its exact construction date is unknown, but it is named after Constantine VII after he repaired it in the tenth century. At that time, it was reportedly decorated with gilded bronze plaques that portrayed the victories of Basil I who was the grandfather of Constantine VII. Also there was a sphere at the top of obelisk. However, reportedly these gilded bronze plaques were stolen and melted down by Fourth Crusaders in 1204. Since young Janissaries liked to use the obelisk to climb and show their prowess, the obelisk suffered further damage to its surface. The Walled Obelisk was depicted on the reverse of the Turkish 500 lira banknotes of 1953-1976.
Firuz Aga Mosque - an old Ottoman mosque in the Fatih district of Istanbul, Turkey. It was built by Firuz Ağa, the head treasurer of Sultan Beyazıt II. The marble sarcophagus of Firuz Ağa is located in the mosque complex. The mosque is located in the historical center of the city, on the Divanyolu Street.
Divan Yolu Cd - Otherwise known as Divanyolu Street, and with trams travelling up and down the street.
The Mausoleum of Mahmud II (20 July 1789 -- 1 July 1839) who was the 30th Sultan of the Ottoman Empire from 1808 until his death in 1839.
The German Fountain - a gazebo styled fountain in the northern end of old hippodrome (Sultanahmet Square), Istanbul, Turkey and across from the Mausoleum of Sultan Ahmed I. It was constructed to commemorate the second anniversary of German Emperor Wilhelm II's visit to Istanbul in 1898. It was built in Germany, then transported piece by piece and assembled in its current site in 1900. The neo-Byzantine style fountain's octagonal dome has eight marble columns, and dome's interior is covered with golden mosaics.
Hagia Sophia / Ayasofya - a former Orthodox patriarchal basilica, later a mosque, and now a museum in Istanbul, Turkey. From the date of its dedication in 360 until 1453, it served as the Greek Patriarchal cathedral of Constantinople, except between 1204 and 1261, when it was converted to a Roman Catholic cathedral under the Latin Empire. The building was a mosque from 29 May 1453 until 1931, when it was secularized. It was opened as a museum on 1 February 1935.
The Sultan Ahmed Mosque (Blue Mosque) - historical mosque in Istanbul, the largest city in Turkey and the capital of the Ottoman Empire (from 1453 to 1923). The mosque is popularly known as the Blue Mosque for the blue tiles adorning the walls of its interior. It was built from 1609 to 1616, during the rule of Ahmed I. Like many other mosques, it also comprises a tomb of the founder, a madrasah and a hospice. While still used as a mosque, the Sultan Ahmed Mosque has also become a popular tourist attraction.
Sultanahmet Teknik ve Endustri Meslek - The Sultan Ahmet technical and Industrial College. From here, views are also featured over Istanbul and the Sea of Marmara.

Visiting the Blue Mosque in Istanbul, Turkey (Sultan Ahmed Mosque - Sultan Ahmet Camii) Travel Video. Call to prayer. This morning we are visiting the Blue Mosque also known as Sultan Ahmed Mosque and it is absolutely packed. We arrived here at around 10 am and the lines were wrapping all around the courtyard. It took about 15 minutes to get in but it's absolutely worth it. It's absolutely enormous here. There are six towering minarets, two hundred and sixty windows and twenty thousand tiles just in the main area.

As a man when visiting the mosque this is the type of outfit that you're allowed to wear. T-shirt is fine. You're going to want to have long pants and you're going to want to be wearing socks.
And if you forgot some of these things they do have other items that you can cover up with inside.
And as a girl you'll want to cover your head, your shoulders and your legs. And don't forget the socks. Yes, and bring socks because you will have to take your shoes off before you go in.
So our conclusion from visiting. It's a very impressive mosque. It's one of the largest in the world. I loved going inside. It's amazing to see but crowds are something to contend with definitely.
