This will have to be my fav place.. it is absolutely magnificent. and yes stunningly expensive.
The port is not big enough to accomodate cruise ships so tenders (smaller craft) are used to transport tourist from cruise ships to the port.. This may be a problem when it is windy as the waves make it
dangerous to disembark and to get tourist back on the ship .. thats another story which some tourist will remember Portofino by.
It is said that Portofino was founded by the Romans and named Portus Delphini,
(Port of the Dolphin) because of the large number of dolphins that inhabited the
Tigullian Gulf. Records mention the village from 986 and in 1171 it was included in
Rapallo's jurisdiction.
After 1229 it was part of the Republic of Genoa.
The town's natural harbour supported a fleet of fishing boats,
In 1409 Portofino was sold to the Republic of Florence by Charles VI of
but when the latter was ousted from Genoa the Florentine gave it back.
In the 15th century it was a fief of families such as the Fieschi, Spinola, Adorno
and Doria.
In 1815 it became part of the Kingdom of Sardinia and, from 1861, of the unified Kingdom
of Italy.
In the late 19th century, first British, then other northern European aristocratic
tourists began to visit Portofino.
Aubrey Herbert (18801923) was one of the more famous Englishmen to maintain
a villa at Portofino. Eventually more expatriates built expensive holiday homes.
By 1950 tourism had supplanted fishing as the town's main industry,

The solemn, bearded man of the Colosso dell’Appennino sits hunched on the ground, his gaze fixed on the still water. It’s a pose that he has held for more than 400 years, and one that he will keep for many years to come.
Indeed, his story started in 1569 when Italian architect Bernardo Buontalenti began work on an elaborate villa. It was to be the home of Francesco I de’Medici, the Grand Duke of Tuscany, and the nobleman hoped that the grand property would impress his mistress, Bianca Capello, a famous beauty of the time.

In fact, the resulting Villa di Pratolino in Vaglia, Italy, became known for its wonderful gardens, which were built in a classic Mannerist style. They included many features designed to delight and entertain guests, such as cooling fountains that sprayed over visitor’s heads and the various other ingenious water-operated machines.
Chief among its most celebrated features, though, was the giant statue known as the Colosso dell’Appennino. And although the villa itself was demolished long ago, this striking sculpture still remains.

Italian Castles
Italian castles have risen like a phoenix from 3,000 years of history and the ashes of the Roman Empire to become part of a nation renowned for its works of art and the Renaissance; who's mere mention conjures up images of the great cities of Naples, Genoa, Venice and artists da Vinci and Michelangelo.
Italy is studded with medieval hill towns and forts that sit beneath brilliant azure skies, surrounded by sun-drenched slopes full of ripening olive tress and plump grapes ready for the vineyards.
Her castles are a combination of the romance of art coupled with the rugged beauty of her landscape, giving them a grandeur and a sense of 'chic' that only her past masters could achieve.

Travel Guide - Monterosso Beach - Cinque Terre Italy
Information on how to get to Cinque Terre Italy and Monterosso Beach:
Cinque Terre is along the southwest coast of Italy, just north of another favorite Italy travel destination, The Amalfi Coast. To get to Cinque Terre, there are many ways to get there, but we suggest you fly into Genoa (Genovo), then take the Trenitalia (Treno or Train), southbound into Cinque Terre. There is not an actual town called Cinque Terre. Cinque Terre is made up of five beautiful beach towns, starting from North going South; Levanto, Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia and Monarola. The only two towns that have beaches are Levanto and Monterosso with Monterosso being the most lively and have the most to offer. As you can see from this video there are beautiful beach girls, beach side hotels and beach front cafe's to be enjoyed.

Andrea Doria film on the #1 and #13 Lifeboats.
SS Andrea Doria, was an ocean liner for the Italian Line home ported in Genoa, Italy, most famous for her sinking in 1956, when 46 people were killed.
The incident and its aftermath were heavily covered by the news media. While the rescue efforts were both successful and commendable, the cause of the collision with Stockholm and the loss of Andrea Doria generated much interest in the media and many lawsuits. Largely because of an out-of-court settlement agreement between the two shipping companies during hearings immediately after the disaster, no determination of the cause(s) was ever formally published. Although greater blame appeared initially to fall on the Italian liner, more recent discoveries have indicated that a misreading of radar on the Swedish ship initiated the collision course, leading to errors on both ships.
On Andrea Doria, the decision to abandon ship was made within 30 minutes of impact. A sufficient number of lifeboats for all of the passengers and crew were positioned on each side of the Boat Deck. Procedures called for lowering the lifeboats to be fastened alongside the glass-enclosed Promenade Deck (one deck below), where evacuees could step out windows directly into the boats, which would then be lowered down to the sea. However, it was soon determined that half of the lifeboats, those on the port side, were unlaunchable due to the severe list, which left them high in the air. To make matters worse, the list also complicated normal lifeboat procedures on the starboard side. Instead of loading lifeboats at the side of the Promenade Deck and then lowering them into the water, it would be necessary to lower the boats empty, and somehow get evacuees down the exterior of the ship to water level to board. This was eventually accomplished through ropes and Jacob's ladders. In fear of causing a panic and stampeding of the starboard lifeboats, Captain Calamai decided against giving the order to abandon ship until help arrived. In the meantime, Second Officer Badano made announcements over the loudspeaker system instructing passengers to put on their lifebelts and go to their designated muster stations.
