Street Food of Prague, Czech Republic. The Trdelník Sweet Pastry from Slovakia
Trdelník is a traditional Slovak cake and sweet pastry, originally coming from Hungarian-speaking part of Transylvania, Romania. It also is known within the culinary heritages of other European countries like Hungary, the Czech Republic and Austria. It is made from rolled dough that is wrapped around a stick, then grilled and topped with sugar and walnut mix. Nowadays, trdelník is very popular among tourists as a sweet pastry in Slovakia and the Czech Republic.
Skalický trdelník was registered in December 2007 as PGI (protected geographical indication) in the European Union. The registration application with the detailed description of the product was published in April 2007 in the Official Journal of the European Union.
The production of trdelník has a long tradition in the Slovak town of Skalica near the borders with Czech Republic. The original recipe was brought to Skalica at the end of the 18th century by a transylvanian cook of József Gvadányi, a Hungarian general in retirement. The original recipe was afterwards improved by the inhabitants of Skalica to its final form nowadays known as Skalický trdelník.
The civil association Skalický trdelník was founded at the end of 2004 with the goal of keeping the tradition of the original open fire Trdelník production. The name trdelník comes from trdlo, the wooden stake the cake is wrapped around for cooking which gives it its traditional hollow shape.

CHIMNEY CAKE, TRDELNÍK, CZECH REPUBLIC, PRAGUE
CHIMNEY CAKE, TRDELNÍK, CZECH REPUBLIC, PRAGUE, Trdelník, also called trozkol or trdlo is a kind of spit cake. It is made from rolled dough that is wrapped around a stick, then grilled and topped with sugar and walnut mix.,Trdelník has several origins. In the mid-19th century it was known as a Slovak dish, and in the 20th century as a Moravian dish. A similar pastry was also popular in the Hungarian speaking part of Transylvania (in today's Romania), where it is called kürtőskalács. The word trdelník is of Czech-Slovak origin; the root of this word, trdlo, is the name of the wooden tool the cake ingredients are wrapped around during cooking (which gives it its traditional hollow shape), and can also mean simpleton in English. In the 21st century it became popular among tourists in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Nowadays, trdelník is very popular among tourists as a sweet pastry in many countries, mostly in the Czech Republic. A variation of trdelník with an ice cream filling was popularized by Prague cafés. The version from the Slovak town of Skalica was registered in December 2007 as a PGI in the European Union. The registration application with the detailed description of the product was published in April 2007 in the Official Journal of the European Union., Although trdelník is usually presented as a traditional Czech cake or the old Bohemian pastry, and mentions of český trdelník can be found in 20th century literature, trdelník is mostly mentioned in literature as a Slovak or Moravian, not Bohemian dish, and the mass spread of this dessert in Prague is recognized to have started more recently. Czech cinematographer and reporter Janek Rubeš argues that trdelník is only made for tourists, and that even the hamburger is more traditional in the Czech Republic., The production of trdelník has a long tradition in the Slovak town of Skalica near the border with the Czech Republic. The original recipe was owned by the cook of József Gvadányi a retired Hungarian general what is resident of Skalica at the end of the 18th century. The original recipe was improved by the inhabitants of Skalica to its final form now known as Skalický trdelník.
The civil association Skalický trdelník was founded at the end of 2004 with the goal of keeping the tradition of the original open fire Trdelník production.

Personal Travel: Prague, Czech Republic (2016)
This is our 2nd trip to Prague. Love coming back here! :)

Founded in 1232, the Klementinum in Prague is the largest and most historic complex of buildings in the Old Town. It covers an area of over two hectares close to the Vltava River, near Charles Bridge. The Klementinum has undergone a rich architectural evolution. Since the Middle Ages many of Europe's great astronomers, scientists, philosophers and musicians have studied and worked here, influencing the development of its wonderful array of buildings.
The Astronomical Tower: 172 steps lead to the top of the tower for 360° views over Prague. A lift operates only part of the way, so not for visitors with walking difficulties. On the 2nd floor of the tower is the Meridian Hall, which was designed to determine noon.
Baroque Library Hall: stunning home of the Czech National Library, housing 20,000 books from the early 17th century onwards. The hall is decorated with magnificent ceiling frescoes, and remains unaltered since the 18th century.
The Žižkov Television Tower (Czech: Žižkovský vysílaè) is a unique transmitter tower built in Prague between 1985 and 1992. Designed by the architect Václav Aulický and the structural engineer Jiøí Kozák. It stands high above the city's traditional skyline from its position on top of a hill in the district of Žižkov, from which it takes its name. The tower is an example of high-tech architecture.
The Absintherie Bar and Museum was opened several years ago, with the aim to introduce not only the taste of quality absinthe but also the correct way of its serving. Many people still believe that absinthe is something dangerous and forbidden. However, nowadays, absinthe is known as premium kind of spirits, produced as pure herbs distillate. This is why all the rumours that absinthe must be green and drinking it will bring you strange sensations are just myths.
And so our Prague Underground Tour Begins.....
Old Town Square at night - just beautiful!
