Georgia farmers are accustomed to taking risks. From the weather, to prices, to consumer demand, farming is a risky business. Olive trees from Mediterranean climates can be grown in America for a home gardener to grow fresh olives to eat or for making extra virgin olive oil. Olive trees did not sustain any leaf cold damage in the very cold winter of 2014 when the temperatures dropped to 10 degrees and remained below freezing for over 48 hours. Olive trees were imported by President Thomas Jefferson from Europe into the states of South Carolina and Georgia to feed the American Colonies. Several cold hardy Olive trees are grown in North America today and are evergreen, surviving snow and ice in USDA zones Seven, Eight and Nine. The trees are often planted in landscape areas around pools for that tropical look and to shade patios. The silver-gray colored leafs dramatically contrast with other plants and trees in you'r yard. Often, a Grafted Olive tree will begin bearing Olives the second year of planting and the fruit production substantially increases with every year. Olive crops increase if two separate varieties are planted about 15 feet apart. The color of the Olives growing on the trees can be Green, Gray or Black depending on the variety you've planted. The Hebrew scriptures of the Bible report that Olive trees were grown in Orchards,.Olives were eaten as Fruit or pressed into Olive Oil that was used to anoint the King. Olive Oil is most often used in food preparation to by Gourmet Chefs to enhance the flavor of the food. Olive trees are easy to grow when planted outside or even in containers. The Olives begin ripening in early Fall and mature in about two months. You're family can enjoy growing and eating you're own Olives from your own trees! Kirby's Augusta: The Forgotten Patriot
I always try to take a moment on the Fourth of July to remember Georgia's John Houstoun.
On a day when Patriots are widely celebrated, he is largely ignored.
That's too bad, because if everything had gone the way it should have, John Houstoun would have made the most famous roll call in American history – the Declaration of Independence.
1.Houstoun actually achieved much in Georgia history although we don’t remember it.
2.He was twice governor of Georgia, He was the first mayor of the city of Savannah. He commanded the Georgia militia in the invasion of Florida during the American Revolution and represented Georgia in the Continental Congress.
That’s why he in Philadelphia in the early days of the Continental Congress in 1776, and just as committed to the American cause as Georgia's other signers - George Walton, Lyman Hall and Button Gwinnett. (Library of Congress images abound)
But there was also a fifth Georgian in that group - a Savannah preacher named the Rev. John J. Zubly.
You can blame Zubly for Houstoun's lack of fame.
ACCORDING TO notes from the proceedings of the Continental Congress:
“During the deliberation of congress a few members had privately discussed the propriety of a Declaration … Zubly … secretly dispatched a letter to the British governor containing a full disclosure of this important state secret, and advising him to adopt preventive measures in Georgia. Fortunately, however, a copy of this communication was obtained by one of the clerks, and Mr. Chase … openly accused Dr. Zubly of treachery. He stoutly denied the charge and challenged his accuser to produce the proofs.
But that was apparently a stalling tactic. Zubly seems to have slipped out of Independence Hall and “finding, however that his perfidy would be clearly established, he immediately fled.”
Zubly decided he would cast his lot with the British, quietly slipping out of Philadelphia and heading home to Savannah to share what he knew of the American plans for independence. The four Georgia patriots decided they had to catch the turncoat preacher. Houstoun was, ACCORDING TO THE Congressonal record, “directed to pursue him and to adopt every expedient measure to counteract any evils that might result the disclosure.”
Why Houston? Althought not the youngest or quickest, he was a military man used to aggressive activities and … Maybe he had the fast horse.
Anyway, the chase was on.
This could make a great movie. Two guys racing almost 1,000 miles down the East Coast of Colonial America on what passed for roads. (We could show map that looks like Colonial America … with either a red arrow …. Followed by a blue arrows heading down the East Coast from Philadelphia to Savannah. Or some sort of stock footage from some old Western of two guys riding after each other.)
It would have made a greater movie if Houstoun had caught Zubly, too, but he didn't.
That was the bad news.
The good news was that by the time Zubly got to Savannah, the royal governor JAMES WRIGHT had skipped town. Zubly was labeled a Loyalist. He lost his property and died within a few years.
Houstoun decided not to return to Philadelphia to sign the Declaration. He continued to press the Continenal cause back home and was successful, holding offices as judge, mayor and twice was Georgia governor.
And although his name never made it on the Declaration, it did make it on one of Augusta’s first named streets.
And Georgia named a county south of Macon after Mr. Houston, too.
e both spelled it wrong (“Houston”) but at least we were thinking of him.
This July Fourth, let’s remember him again.

The Mission olive is a cultivar of olive developed in California, by Spanish missions along El Camino Real in the late 18th century. The Mission olive has been included in the Ark of Taste, an international catalog of endangered heritage foods maintained by the Slow Food movement. It is also the only American olive cultivar listed by the International Olive Council in its World Catalogue of Olive Varieties. Although developed in the United States, Mission olives are also used by South African olive oil producers.
Mission trees can reach heights of 40 and 50 feet (12 and 15 m). They produce small fruit, typically of around 4.1 grams (0.14 oz). It has the lowest flesh-to-pit ratio (6.5:1) and greatest cold resistance of any commercial cultivar in California. Mission olives are harvested for table use from late October through November; for oil production, they are harvested between mid-December and February. They are susceptible to peacock spot, a disease caused by the fungus Cycloconium oleaginum, and olive knot, a disease caused by the bacterium Pseudomonas savastanoi.
Mission olives are one of five cultivars (along with Ascolano, Barouni, Manzanilla, and Sevillana) commercially viable in California for production as table olives. They have also been used in the production of olive oil since the days of the Spanish missions.
In 1992, the Mission cultivar represented just over eight percent of California's overall olive acreage. Mission olives were dominant until 1875, when Andalusian immigrants introduced the Manzanilla cultivar; subsequent introductions further reduced the percentage of Mission trees in California. After Manzanilla and Sevillana, however, it remains one of the more common cultivars in the state. The Oroville district in Butte County is a major Mission producer.
Olive trees were first brought to California by the Franciscan mission of San Diego de Alcalá; olive production likely began in earnest within the first two decades of the mission. The original trees suffered after the secularization of the missions, though pioneers cultivated new trees from their cuttings, leading to the distinct Mission cultivar.
Though researchers at the University of Córdoba presumed the Mission olive to be of Spanish origin, they were unable to establish its relationship with any of 700 Spanish cultivars. Recent DNA testing in California suggests the Mission olive could be related to Picholine Marocaine, a Moroccan cultivar. Spanish settlers likely brought what would become the Mission trees to Mexico first.

Rob Greenfield's latest sustainable living project is to live in a DIY 100 ft² tiny house for two years while foraging and growing 100% of his own food in an urban area. You can follow more of Rob's adventures in sustainable living on YouTube and on his website here:
We are thrilled to be featuring Rob on our channel, and we learned so much from him just with this one video collaboration. In addition to living in his tiny home, he's figuring out how to create his own cooking fuel using a biodigester, he's growing his own toilet paper, and he even makes his own sea salt.
He built the tiny house in the backyard of someone who was looking to live more sustainably. In exchange for a place to build the home, he created a rainwater collection system, an extensive garden on the front lawn, a bio digester and composting system, and more.
Obviously, we can't all live like Rob is doing in this video (although it does look like a healthy, simple, and rewarding lifestyle), but we can get inspired to make positive changes in our own lives. Maybe start composting or eating more fresh food, creating less garbage, riding our bikes more, etc. That's what we're inspired to do after working on this video with him :)

14. Yellow Anaconda
When most people think of an anaconda, they are thinking of the green anaconda. But the yellow anaconda is the smallest species of anaconda there is, if you can consider it small! It reaches a maximum length of 10 feet (3 m). As its name suggests, this type of snake is usually yellow or greenish yellow with black or dark brown blotches, spots, and streaks.
It is native to Paraguay, Bolivia, southern Brazil, and northern Argentina. They are threatened by illegal poaching and are hunted for their meat and skins.
Anaconda generally refers to the Eunectes genus of snakes which are members of the boa family. Unlike most snakes that usually lay eggs, anacondas give birth to live young and live near bodies of water. If they catch their meal in the water, they will suffocate it to and/or drown it, whichever comes first!
The Yellow Anaconda is no exception and it is also not a picky eater! They’ll eat just about anything they can swallow. The Telegraph newspaper reported a story about wildlife photographer Chris Brunskill who captured a ferocious battle between a jaguar and a yellow anaconda! Who do you think the winner was? 13. Eastern Indigo Snake
Indigo snakes are the longest snake species in the United States. The longest recorded specimen of the species measured over 9 feet (2.8 m) long! They’re called indigo snakes because their scales are a shiny blackish purple. They are not venomous but they do prey on other snakes, frogs, turtles, lizards, birds, and mammals including mice and rats. They are a bit uncommon and usually are only found in southeastern states like Georgia and Florida- you know how much snakes like Florida! A curious fact is that they love to wander, females will often live in an area of about 100 acres and males will use even 4 times that amount of space. They may often be found sharing a burrow with a gopher tortoise to protect them from the cold. They are listed as a threatened species because so many people have gone out into the wild to collect them for the pet trade.
Speaking of being threatened, if the Eastern Indigo feels attacked, it will flatten its head, and hiss and vibrate its tail. Vibrating its tail produces a rattling sound that mimics the rattle of a rattlesnake. However, these snakes rarely bite and, when they do, remember, it is not venomous.
12. Bushmaster
This is the largest pit viper in the world! The bushmaster’s scientific name translated from latin literally means “Silent”.
A pit viper is a type of venomous snake that possesses a sensitive pit that allows it to accurately aim when striking. The pit allows it to detect another creature’s heat signature. How’s that for a super power! Not only can they see the world in the visible light spectrum like we can, but the pit serves as heat sensors, so they can also see in the infrared spectrum.
Native to the scrublands and forests of southern central America to northern South America, it prefers damp areas with lots of rain. Their population is actually unknown because they live in dense forests and unexplored areas.
There are three species of pit vipers and they are all large. The bushmaster ranges from 6.5 feet (2 m) to over 12 feet (3.5 m) making them the longest venomous snake found in the Americas!! They are considered the 2nd longest venomous snake in the world after the king cobra.
A bushmaster may wait for weeks in a single location, waiting to ambush its prey, which is usually rodents. Few people have been bitten but just that little amount of data suggests that there is an 80% mortality rate, also making this snake the deadliest snake in the Americas. Fun fact: They are also the only egg-laying pit viper found in the Americas as well. This snake breaks all kinds of records!
